Ranger, a few years ago I had one of my Shimano's serviced by Wayne Knabe of Powhatan, Virginia. Wayne told me that he could not get Shimano parts for older reels but he had a source for off-market parts. He got the part and so far, after two years, the reel is working great. You need to find someone who can get off-market parts or has older Shimano reels they can cannibalize for parts. Or contact Delaware Tackle on the Forum and send the reel to them if they can help you.

When the family touring New York City wanted to go to Madison Square Garden, the father stopped a local New Yorker and asked, "how do I get to Madison Square Garden?" "Practice, practice, practice," replied the New Yorker. You need to do the same thing plus study the weather, water, temperatures, bass and forage movement cycles during the year, physics, math, English, setting up fishing logs, boating safety, tides, currents, structure, cover, electronics, mechanics, electrical systems, trailering, types of line, reels, rods, guides, hooks, weights, techniques and few other things. After you master all of that then you can go out and become a good angler. Then, with all this knowledge and high end tackle those small little green monsters will still make you look like a fool at times!!!

Try Dance's Sporting Goods by Southpark Mall and ask them where there are some good places to fish. The Vulcan ponds are a good start. You will need a map to find them outside of Colonial Heights. Ask the Dance people if they have the 2017 or 2018 Freshwater Fishing in Virginia free booklet that lists the place so you can fish in the greater three-cities/Prince George County areas. For tackle, see what Dance's has and hit the Wal-Mart around the mall. And ask Dance if the "pay to fish" place is still in business. Right now the water is extremely cold in the central Virginia area and with snow hitting us this Wednesday I don't know if you would get a bite as the bass are going deep. The "guy" in the article is John Crews. Check him out on the Internet. Two things to add to the conversation: 1. After making your cast, have the reel in your hand facing toward the sky. 2. Be sure to include your "magnets" when setting up your baitcaster for each bait you throw. For long casts, I use both hands as John Crews has suggested. For shorter casts I let the rod do the work. I was told it was easier to take the bus to and from the locations and there were lots of busses. I was having too much fun in the exhibit hall. Remember, bring a black pen marker for autographs; bags for you and your son if you don't get a few from Dick's; think of questions to ask the various manufacturers reps who will be in attendance; wear comfortable shoes; be patient in the parking area traffic; look for lines to meet the pros and see what they are giving away; watch for the pros walking around the hall; and have a great time. And see Glenn, too! If you are a member of B.A.S.S. call them to find out if they have any specials and break areas for members. They will have a booth when you come into the exhibition hall but I believe you have to register with them before the event. Sorry, I may be wrong so call B.A.S.S. and ask about what they are doing for their members. There will be hot dogs and hamburgers and drinks available but they are expensive. But that's show biz. And a cell phone or camera for pics. You have to take pics with the pros and Glenn and Big-O and the MegaStrike gang and the Classic trophy and anything you want to have your son get his picture taken. Be sure your cell phone or camera batteries are fully charged, too. The exhibition hall is like us being a child in a candy store. Great fun and surprises at every turn.

I would add fishing the banks, too. Any way you can show anything on the bottom, like rocks, wood, blowdowns, humps, tires, trees, etc.? Can you add a measurement scale by the mile so we will understand how long and wide the area is? Thanks.

Sometimes. My favorite pond is an hour away so I just go there and have some fun. But I do take a look at the river when I cross it and other bodies of water as I pass them in my car.

Its over. The hunt for Nik is over, sadly. Not a good ending. FLW is extremely saddened to announce that the body of co-angler Nik Kayler, 38, of Apopka, Florida, has been recovered from Lake Okeechobee. Kayler’s body was recovered from the lake near Clewiston, Florida, Wednesday morning by a commercial vessel. Numerous agencies, including the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), United States Coast Guard, St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office and Okeechobee Sheriff’s Office were involved in... the search which began Thursday evening. “Our prayers are with Nik’s family during this time of unimaginable tragedy,” said FLW President of Operations Kathy Fennel. “The loss of his life touches the entire fishing community.” Further updates will be released as they become available from local authorities investigating the accident. An official statement from the FWC was released Wednesday afternoon: On Thursday, January 4, William Kisiah (DOB 4/9/1966) of Slidell, LA and Nicolas Kayler (DOB 1/1/1980) of Apopka, FL departed the C. Scott Driver boat ramp located on the Kissimmee River in Okeechobee, Florida aboard a 21’ Ranger Bass Boat. Preliminary information indicates that the vessel encountered rough waters and struck a wave and Mr. Kayler was ejected from the vessel. Mr. Kisiah made landfall at the Pahokee Marina later that evening when he made contact with Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. Numerous agencies, including the FWC, United States Coast Guard, St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office and Okeechobee Sheriff’s Office were involved in the search for Mr. Kayler. Mr. Kayler's body was recovered on the morning of January 10 by a commercial vessel in the vicinity of the Clewiston water tower on the lake. All of the members of the FWC want to express our sincere sympathies to the victims and families of the victims involved in this incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.
