  6. Lots of great info here. When it comes to identifying productive structure, it is important to tune into the structure. Learn as much about it in every way. My mapping system puts me close, my sonar explains a lot but, it's my lure that really tells me what is down there. I dissect a spot by zig-zaging on and off it and watching my sonar. I may see baitfish or even what I may believe is bass and some cover. However, it's my lure that tells me what I really want to know.
  7. Thanks guys! Gavin has been fishing since he was 3 years old. Shakeyhead worms are ideal for him to fish deep. With the right hook, real sharp lightwire, when he feels a bite all he has to do is real down and the fish sets the hook itself most of the time. It really takes a kid with enough patience to stay focused and not give up. He just doesn't lose interest like most youngins' do. Thanks for the replies! I've read all of the replies to him and it really puts a smile on his face! CJ
  8. What you call it is what you call it. What you get out of the read is what you get out of it and it's a good post. Not to step on your toes Catt, I may have missed it, but just to add one of my favorite structures is a "horseshoe" or a indentation in a ridge or ledge. Bass love to use this structure as an ambush spot for baitfish, especially in current.
  9. Man fish in that feeding mood will either hit almost anything or hit nearly nothing. I've caught them on a variety of topwaters, spinnerbaits, and plastics. If the surface is smooth it's hard to beat a spook. If there's a little ripple I like to wake a spinnerbait and kill it. Double fluke rigs work well and I've even caught em' by swiming a jig or a t-rigged senko threw them. It can be frustrating but there is a lure and presentation that will kill em'! You just got to tinker with em' a little bit. Sometimes you may need to key in on the bait instead of the bass. I had thing going one time where I was making my spinnerbait hit the baitfish. This draw some big strikes from big fish! CJ
  10. Awesome story Russ and nice fish! Your fishing buddy is a great guy. Looks like ya'll made some memories! CJ
  11. That's a big cat! So, what are you having for supper? CJ
  12. I took my dad and youngest son Gavin out for a short 4 hour trip Sunday evening after most of the vacationers got off the water. Man all I can say is "my boy made daddy proud!" We were fishing ledges about 15-20 ft. deep. Gavin wanted to throw his favorite, shakeyhead worm. Seemed he chose wisely. I caught the first fish at about 3 lbs. Then Gavin went to schooling his father and the one before him! He was up 3-1 on his old man. And that's 3 keepers in about thirty minutes. We had a great day and my cheeks are still strained from smiling. Gavin ended up catching four fish and three of them being keepers. I'd like to have had him out longer to see if he could have got his limit. The young man is only 7 yrs. old. He put one on his grandfather....and kept up with dad pretty well! We ended up catching 14 fish. Gavin had two of em' pushing 3 lbs. Not bad for a youngin' fishing ledges! Here's some pics: His best Bill Dance pose! ;D BTW, take a kid fishing!
  13. Cool! I just started throwing flukes more this year but I throw two of them! Nice fish! It's always a great day when dad's with you! CJ

  19. Some good points. First off, do you have Google Earth? If the water is clear, you can see more than you think if you know what you're looking at. Usually the darker shades of water is deeper. Observe the shoreline. Are there obvious points? How about feeder creeks? There are clues that may lead you or make it possible to picture in your mind what the bottom contour is. I used to use a deep diving crankbait like a DD22 to find structure. In a shallower resevoir you may need one that doesn't dive that deep. It should be obvious when you hit bottom. Ofcourse you need to know close to how deep it dives for you. Start by throwing paralell to the bank until your not hitting bottom. Once you found the deep water offshore, the job is to then hit bottom once again out in the deep water. Deep cranks are also great for finding submerged vegetation. They'll usually gather you a nice sample. But we are talking about structure. A c-rig will allow you to feel the bottom at all times but it may be hard to feel for drop offs unless they are very vertical. BTW, welcome to Bass Resource! CJ
  20. Is it a natural or man made lake?
  21. I'm tellin' ya, that braclet is glowin'! Great job Gene! Cool video too! CJ
  22. Well I don't mean to top it but, I've caught 8 in. bass on 12" worms. You don't have to live in Texas to throw a big worm. I think your going a little overkill with the 11/0 hook though. I have use as small as a 4/0 with 10" worms. I am currently using a 5/0. Usually any bass 15" and up eat a big worm it will suck the whole thing up in one gulp, a big fish especially. A smaller fish may have to be fed a little bit. And to answer the question, YES
  23. Man that's what it's all about right there! Great job men! Nice brownfish btw! CJ
  24. FLW takes more into consideration when it comes to selecting tournament sights. They try to keep it fair by alternating between several lakes during a period of a few years. They will return to Ky. Lake in the next year or two. As for the pros, let's not forget that some of the all-time greats fish FLW exclusively. George Cochran, David Fritts, Larry Nixon, and there's more. It's not got anything to do with their ability. They simply feel FLW is the tour for them. Their techniques are determined by lake and season.
