  1. I find that the 735 is too fast for a reaction bait rod, and too fast for frogs, in my preference. I must have been thinking of the 736 when I said 706 then. But I could have sworn that there was a 706. To add to the conversation, Rich over at Dobyn's says that they make the fury and savvy 735/6 a little slower than the champion equivalent. So I might opt for the SS736c then.
  2. For what it is worth: I have neither of those, but I have a TProG and an STX. I like the TProG much, much better. There is nothing wrong with the STX, but I like the Lew's better. My biggest issue with the STX is just that it feels much cheaper than the Lew's, mostly just cosmetic I guess.
  3. Anyone here own a Dobyns 5 or 6 power? I have a DX745 and I'm thinking of getting a D706 for frogs and my pike rod (ie big baits). I'm wondering if the 705 will suffice or if it's just better to get the 706 for the little extra backbone.
  4. I've got a TProG, and I can't imagine a better reel! haha. I will be picking up a Magnesium in the next couple months though.
  5. It's definitely not new, I use it in 80# for my muskie/pike set up. So I can't say much as far as smaller tests go. But I have had no issues and it's a lot quieter and has more abrasion resistance than the PP I used before.
  6. Only fished a triumph, fished it for 5 years, broke 2 months after the warranty expired... of course. But the Lew's MB is the way to go, love all of their reels.
  7. This is a tad bit out of place, but still rods and reels. I'm going up to the Boundary Waters in late June, want to target as much as possible, pike, walleye, smallies, panfish and catfish. We are relying on catching fish in order to eat. There will be two of us, and we will probably bring 2 rods each. My buddy is bringing a medium spinning rod and baitcaster (he only has two rods). I'm thinking of buying a new frog rod, and taking that, for big spinners and swimbaits. In addition, I want to bring a 7' ML spinning rod, can probably handle everything but pike on that. Any advice?
  8. I wouldn't say it's a gimmick. It's a proven musky lure, just downsized for bass, I've had one for about 2 years now. When my buddy and I go night fishing, we throw that and a black buzzbait, about equally effective.
  9. Yeah this one .com/rods-customlite.php
  10. Anyone one use these rods? I really like those winn grips and I need a frogging rod, might just buy one for the he!! of it.
  11. I despise the veritas for anything except cranking. Never used a bucoo. I had a triumph for 5 years, broke 2 weeks after the 5 year warranty expired. I'd go with the triumph X over those 2.
  12. I've heard that the 743 is Dobyns best spinning rod available. I have heard that the two power rods from dobyns are on the whippy side.
  13. As far as Abu and Lew's go, I always prefer Lew's, the Abu's feel very cheap in my hands, and that's just purely preference. I'd only recommend the BB1 Pro if you plan on throwing a variety of different sized baits.
  14. Funnily enough, I work in a physics lab! Thanks for the quotes guys, it'll have to be a decision made amongst the club members but I'll pass the quotes on.
  15. I managed to hook into a rock, at Table Rock, while casting a Spro Rkcrawler. Also once caught a lure by buddy lost the day before. Except this lure was attached to a 6lber.
  16. Maybe this should be in "everything else", but I figure it will be moved by an admin if need be. I lost a very good friend yesterday, he was a sophomore in Engineering and the president of the University of Illinois fishing club. We are going to frame his jersey and add a small plaque at the bottom. We are debating what to put on the plaque, either something simple, like "gone but not forgotten", or something fishing related. I'm a fan of "gone fishin," it's short and sweet. Does anyone have any ideas of something I could put?
  17. Putting me in a rough spot! I've heard very good things about the Okuma GS's. Very good starting rod. However, I'm a Dobyns fan boy, so there is also that... However I think we can reach a middle ground! Buy the Okuma, and if you don't like it, sell it on here and buy a Dobyns later!
  18. I'm tired of forgetting sunscreen, so I'm most likely going to order one from dobyns the next time I make a rod order.
  19. Do you guys use a fast or extra fast? Secondary question, what length rod do y'all use?
  20. My 703 definitely fishes light, I'd say more as a medium than a medium-heavy. My DX745 is a mag-heavy, but fishes more like a heavy (h*ll it's more like a medium-heavy IMHO haha). So definitely off by 1 power. It sounds like you need a 3-power too.
  21. I used to use a Dobyns 735, but it's just too fast. I think I'm going to switch over to a 705.
  22. This^^ I use a Dobyns Savvy 703 with a Revo STX and #12 FC. I feel I need to move up to a 704 if I add a trailer.
  23. Thanks guys. I'm trying to get him to get a Tournament MB and a Dobyns Savvy. Or maybe a Mach I.
  24. Howdy. Looking for a rod and reel for $200 for my buddy. I have a discount at Abu, Lew's and Dobyns, so my buddy thinks I'm biased in my opinions (he's not wrong by any means). Give me your top combos for $200!
