Fall Fishing In The North
Did ok the other day. Caught 4 fish in 4 hours. Bluegills are all over the bank, everywhere you look theres gills everywhere. The bass are a little bit off the bank in about 10-15 feet of water pushing gills towards the bank feeding on them. Caught 2 fish on a bluegill colored shallow diving square bill crankbait. One on a white and black spinnerbait and one on a ribbontail worm. Biggest fish was 3.2 pounds. The thing about the quarry is that theres not much shallow water on the bank. Goes out about 10 feet then just drops off into darkness. So its kind of sweet because the bass like to hang in shallow cover near deep water and thats all the quarry is, shallow cover near deep water. LAst year we built some cover from tree stumps and logs and its starting to pay off. Fish all over the cover.

Colors, Do They Really Matter??
No matter where you fish jigs or what color water you cant go wrong with tried and true black and blue. Thats the only color I use and have plenty of success with it.

Fall Fishing In The North
All the fall fishing articles Ive been reading are all about Southern states. Mostly Texas. What about us northeners? I fish quarry lakes outside Philadelphia. Theyre deep, clear water lakes with the forage being bluegill, white perch and yellow perch. Theres no shad in the lake. Im going out tomorrow morning around 5. Got a ribbon tail worm, spinnerbait, Hula Popper and a black and blue jig tied on ready to go. Ant tips on fall fishing up north? Remember this is a very deep clear water quarry lake. Its only a couple acres big and Im on the bank.

Strategy For Shore/land Fishing.
I used to have that same problem. You cant go by where you caught fish before. I mean yea, fish it but if you dont get any hits in a half hour or so then its def time to move on.

Strategy For Shore/land Fishing.
Also dont just walk up to the shoreline and cast, if possible stay back 10 feet or so and make your casts. And dont cast deep first, cast paralell to the shoreline and fan out.

Strategy For Shore/land Fishing.
When you get to a new spot, lay out the lures you have the most confidence in. For me i have 4 rods with a spinnerbait, jig, some kind of soft plastic and a top water. Throw 10-15 casts with each. If you dont catch anything move on to a new spot and repeat. Like i said your favorite lures, 10-15 casts, move on. Oh and make sure you fan cast with those lures so you cover the area throughouly.

Teaching Someone To Fish- Do You Start Them With Live Bait?
Love this. Fishing does teach a person how to stay focused, be persistent and patient. I used to be a very im patient person until i started bass fishing. Fishing helped me in a way that I will never be able to repay. Had substance abuse problems really bad with presciption meds ands when i cleaned up i picked up bass fishing and it just helped to keep my head clear. An amazing sport indeed. As far as teaching someone to fish Id say start them with minnows or shiners to keep the action up and keep them into it. Then once they learn to cast and such switch to plastics and spinnerbaits.

How Big Would You Say This Bass Was?
Agree, 4.5-5lbs. Slobasauraus Rex!

Scents
I think fish have a better sense of smell then we give them credit for. I always, ALWAYS spray my lures with a baitfish or crawfish scent, just in case. Then again, Im a oily slimy Italian. Haha

Things Bass Fisherman Say...
Haha i sing that same tune. Jig jig jig, all day long, jig jig jig while i sing this song. I create a song for every lure. The wacky rig, it kicks ass, believe you this itll catch some bass!

Shore Fishing
Believe it or not regular schoolbags are pretty tough. Ive been using the same Jansport schoolbag for 2 years now and the thing is solid. 3 plano boxes for plastics and hard baits, a small plano box for terminal tackle and stuff like pliers, scissors etc go in the front pouch and im set.

Catch And Release
I hear ya but these guys go around this area and destroy small lakes and ponds. Literally not kidding they suck these waters dry. And this is Philadelphia theres not a ton of places with good size bass. Im not going to let them ruin all of them. They throw a crap load of rods in the water at once and keep every single thing they catch. And the cops? Te cops around here couldnt care less, they got better things to do than deal with fisherman. So its up to us. And technically its not public. Its on private land that me and my buddies had to ask permission to go onto. Its a quarry with 2 lakes on each side of the road. Theres no tresspassing, no swimming, no fishing signs everywhere. I had to go to the Eureka Stone Quarry main office up the road and ask the manager if we could fish it.

Catch And Release
He was not obeying the law. HE had fish in that bucket that were not legal to take home. Not to mention he had 4 rods in the water at the same time which you also cant do in PA. Its a quarry lake that we had to get permission from the company to fish. Im pretty sure he didnt and just hopped the fence without permission.

Catch And Release
Dude its terrible around here. Bucket brigade everywhere. I caught one at my secret quarry spot and watched him put 2 three pounders in his bucket. I told him to throw them back, he refused so i kicked his bucket over into the water when he wasnt looking. I told him If i catch him again hes gonna have a problem. HAvent seen him since. Like I said I have no problemn if youre obeying the law but that quarry is my secret honey hole. Theres only 7 of us that fish it and we actively try and take care of it. We build cover with trees and 2x4', cinderblocks, we do selective harvest and its working. Im not about to let some ass nugget ruin our honey hole.

Catch And Release
I personally dont keep anything I catch. But If youre obeying the laws and limits then I have no problem. What I cant stand are the bucket brigades that keep everythng from a 1 inch bluegill to a 5 pound bass. And when you say something all of a sudden they dont speak english or look at you like you have 3 heads. They leasrn real quick when you get on the phone with DnR.

Thats why I always bring my UL with me. I am not happy unless my hands smell like fish. So if the bass arent biting i can always catch some slab gill and crappie.

Things Bass Fisherman Say...
Thats one of my favorites. Guys automatically know exactly how big a fish is as soon as they hook into it. "Aw man I had an 8 pounder on the other day but lost it." An 8 pounder huh. How do you know if you never saw the fish? Ive learned little fish can feel huge and big fish can feel tiny so its impossible to know until you land the fish.

Finding Forage
I thought the same thing for a while. How can I find out what baitfish are in a lake quick and easy. Either go online or like I said get a small ultra light ugly stick and fish super tiny grubs. I like the second way best, plus its fun cause youre catchig something and those small UL rods are a blast to catch even tiny fish with. If you happen to hook into a bass with that, look out! The combo I use is a 5 foot UL Ugly Stick and its awesome. Super fun catching Crappies with as well.

Finding Forage
Just do what I do, bring a small ultra light rod and fish for the forage and such. Bluegill, Shad, Perch, all forage will go after a tiny grub on a tiny jighead. Youll find out what the forage is real easy. And have some fun doing it.

Shore Fishing
These are great tips right here. I highly agree with moving quietly, you would be surprised how much fish can feel and see. Also simplifying your tackle is paramount. I use a normal Jansport schoolbag. A jig/crankbait box, spinnerbait/jerkbait box, soft plastic/topwater box and a terminal tackle box. Those 3 boxes fit everything i need. Also you dont need every color of every lure. Stick with tried and true colors. Black/blue, green, green pumpkin, chartruese. You should be able to catch fish with just those 4 colors.
