Being on time
I was always under the impression that my time to start work was when I was actually working not just walking in the door. The only reason I am late to something is if it is an emergency. I have kids and they know the deal, and neither of them like to be late to anything. To me it is a respect thing. If we have an agreement to meet at a certain time and you are late you are telling me that whatever you were doing is more important than what we had planned. Now this may be the case but this should not be the norm. My sister and her family and parents are always late and I don't even care because she lives 300 miles away and I don't schedule around their needs and wants. I let them know what is going on and that is how it goes. If they make it, great if not, oh well. Time is limited and I am not gonna sit around waiting for someone to meet me who said they were going to at a certain time.

What line for jigs and Texas rigs?
I have used 15lb yozuri hybrid and also 30 or 40lb braid. I prefer the hybrid when fishing rocks as it is way more abrasion resistant but all other situations I am going straight braid. Fishing bottom baits on straight braid is a little different than the other types of line though as you lose slack line sensitivity but I am a religious line watcher and your line shouldn't be slack with those presentations anyways. I also loosen my drag a touch on braid set ups to accommodate for the no stretch scenario.

Sonars takin the fun out the hunt?
nope a total non issue to me. I'd rather not waste time fishing areas that didn't hold fish than fishing poor areas and then hoping to land one for that level of excitement. Cool part is everyone can do whatever they want and fish however they want and as long as they are not trashing the environment and legal, I am cool with it.

Is there any advantage to throwing cranks on a casting reel or can heavier (3/8-1/2) be hard on a spinning reel?
grinding isn't good no matter what but it is probably stressing the gears more due to the resistance. I own multiple stradics and never use them for baits that require movement by the reel and I have yet to hear any grinding. Biggest advantage to a cranking set up for me is the rod being more parabolic which helps to keep trebles hooked up and cranking reels are generally slower IPT. For me spinning reels just feel weird, i know very scientific, when cranking constantly. You are also put a lot of stress on the roller as opposed to the spool with a baitcaster.

Ketch Board
They line up fine on mine. Its the angle of your picture.

Do you find a fluke to be effective for river smallmouth when the water is low, slow and clear like this, and how do you rig it?
95% of the time I am nose hooking my flukes on rivers with a inline circle hook. If there is a lot of grass or snags i go weedless weightless with a 4/0 superline to give me a littel extra weight depending on the fluke I am using. https://snaglertackle.com/product-category/soft-plastic/minnows/

Road To The Superbowl 2024
The SuperBowl, no matter who is in it, is the most watched TV event every single year with few exceptions. Ratings also don't even factor in the streaming crowd for the most part either. I saw a stat somewhere before that said something like 85 out of the top 100 most viewed events in history were NFL related. I like seeing upsets for sure but this is ultimately nothing more than a first week win against a team who didn't have their best skill position player. A win is a win and I do think the Lions will fare well this season. Gotta keep improving and moving forward so since it was a Thursday game I guess they can celebrate till Saturday this week then its on to the next one lol

i finally ordered some navigation lights for my kayak.
Usually the light requirements are white light visible 360 degrees when anchored and if your kayak is powered, you follow the powered vessel arrangements. While my kayak is powered and I do not go out at night on lakes without a HP restriction, I have chosen to NOT install the red and green navigation lights for various reasons which I won't disclose here out of respect to the rules of the forum but if interested, feel free to PM.

Road To The Superbowl 2024
You'd think by reading these comments the lions won by 25.......a win is a win but a 1 point win isn't anything to hang your hat on in my eyes. Goodell has zero control over that and all he cares about is the league making money so he can get paid. Having a Lions Browns SuperBowl would reactivate fan bases that have been dormant and bring other fans to the league. There is a reason the Browns only went what, 3 years after they moved to Baltimore to get a new team in place. Browns fanbase is very solid and I would bet pretty much any football fan, once they got over their own team losing, would find one of those teams to pull for if they met up in the SuperBowl

That Big Fish Something
There is nothing special about the person as far as fishing goes. It is all about having a big fish mindset AND actually going for it in that manner. Lots of people say they want the biggest fish but are content stumbling into a few while catching average size fish. There is a reason I make the 4 hour one way drive for day trips to the susquehanna for smallies and that is because I know there are larger fish there and i'll take a single 20+" fish over 20 fish 12-16" assuming time allows for it.

Road To The Superbowl 2024
Line for the chiefs game dropped 2 points in some places. That is a huge change for a non QB. All I want is a good game and I have a feeling it will be a good one.

Fly tying....getting back into it.
Those look pretty cool. I know when I first started tying his Belly Bumper pattern he was creating this same look by gluing a grizzled hackle on a solid base. This new stuff looks way easier to manage.

If there is a stretch of river that other people have had success on but you haven’t, do you keep at it until you figure it out or stick to your comfort water?
All depends on what your end goal is. Are you to catch quality fish or are you trying to catch quality fish any place you go? There are times I go with the comfort spots but uncomfortable spots don't become comfortable ones without putting the time in. It allows me to hone my techniques and read new water better and have more success. If you aren't failing, you aren't improving.

Fly tying....getting back into it.
What is funny is I started fly fishing seriously around 2000 and I was making articulated flies by cutting hooks. I then got into other stuff and occasionally fly fished but was more into conventional. Fast forward to about 5 years ago and I got back into fly fishing pretty much exclusively for warmwater species and started tying and I see all these beautifully made shanks to make my life easier. I got into making brushes a little bit but stopped because pretty much all my needs are met with commercial ones.

Heat sneaks up on ya
Yup it happens and you didn't drink nearly enough water. Also remember hydration isn't about the day of, it is about the days leading up to the time in the heat.

Fly tying....getting back into it.
I love that style of fly. The action is crazy. Do you have an articulation in yours? I have tied similar flies with one articulation to increase the action a little more but they produce about the same as ones that I don't so I stopped tying them that way.

First kayak experience and tips
Good advice on here already so of course I'll add my .02. Wind is the worst thing a kayaker has to deal with but you eventually learn to use it to your advantage. You are correct that an anchor will become the pivot point and you will then face into the wind so prepare for that when anchoring up. Another great item that I use more than my anchor when on flat water is a stakeout pole through my anchor trolley. Allows me to anchor quickly in up to about 7' of water and position myself how I want. Now my kayak I can stand and pretty much face whatever direction I want so it isn't a major concern. I will also second the anchor wizard set up. The chute makes things easy and prevents wear from the anchor line being drug over the nose of the kayak and the reel locks the line down well. Great idea to not rig anything permanent yet until you get a feel for what YOU want on YOUR kayak. Lots of people new to the sport rig their boats based on what other people do and their problems but not their own. I have been kayak fishing for 2+ decades and I still go out 4-5 times before I permanently rig anything. I will also add that track systems allow a lot more flexibility in rigging so consider that when you begin to make the kayak yours. I'd also think about possibly saving some money up, selling the kayak and jon boat, and getting a more fishing friendly and longer kayak. That 10'er is gonna spin and be a bear to handle in any wind.

Trolling motor hack I learned about.......R/C Plane prop to increase speed and efficiency
I'll pass. I am not a big fan of swapping out a prop when I want to be fishing. .5mph is nothing in the grand scheme of things. When I was motor shopping I want to say the endura drew between 40-50 amps at max throttle. So your standard 100ah battery you would gain a whopping 1 extra mile, if that. Also with me fishing rivers primarily, that torque is important on start up or i could be struggling to keep position in current. And for the record, I have an NK180S with 30ah battery and on flatwater can get almost 6mph at full tilt or a little over 5 at 70% or so and my battery will last me upwards of 10+ miles. On river trips I can easily cover 6+ miles in all but the heaviest current. Honestly it seems like something people would do who don't get out to fish much and want to tinker and that is fine, just doesn't make sense to me for a minimal gain in speed while losing in other areas.

Do you have (fishing) acquaintances that are a one-way street?
Nope because I usually don't ask. I freely give whatever information i have unless it is about a smaller flow that additional traffic could impact the fishery. If it is on a major body of water, fair game to me. I don't understand the not sharing mindset unless you were a trounament fisherman in an actual tournament.
-
Do you find silent or rattling shallow diving squarebills more effective for river smallmouth?
I can agree with that but I will also add one plus to a crankbait is the ability to control depth without adding weight in faster water and the rise of a crankbait when motion is stopped has triggered a ton of strikes for me over the years, especially in faster water.

the other week i saw a Toyota Prius moving a boat. small boat, but a boat.
Looks like a raft too which is awesome. I don't think they weigh too much more than a large kayak

Hook Sharpener
they still work when rusty. What I do now is throw them in one of my fly or plano boxes. If i take it out to use it, I then hang it somewhere on the kayak, usually near my drying pool noodle, then it is good to go by the time I get home and unload everything.

Hook Sharpener
https://www.madriveroutfitters.com/p-372-dr-slick-diamond-hook-hone.aspx this is the one I use for my flies and conventional baits as needed. generally when fishing conventional baits I retie with a new hook unless it is a jig or something similar then I will make it good as new again. It doesn't take but a few passes to get back to sticky sharp.

$125 Lure?
except you'd need to at least double your budget for the Kobe ribeye....
