  1. It's all about maximizing the space. It was a lot more work the first year getting al let plant stuff on the spreadsheet but now it is plug and play pretty much. I figure out what i want to plant, add a few new things on to my list and mark off the squares. Took about an hour of planning and probably 2 hours of prepping the soil and laying out the grid and another hour planting. Once everything sprouts, it is just watering and the occasional weeding, which i hate but my wife doesn't mind doing it and my son likes to do it too so i leave it to them.
  2. Will do..here is what one of the grids look like before planting. I didn't have enough twine to finish the other side so I will do that tomorrow.
  3. well i am currently out of work while doing my student teaching so it is semi-forced on me although i do have a long term sub position that is to start the first week of May so.....
  4. About two years ago I started gardening in an attempt to show my then 2 year old son about how the food we eat grows and takes a lot of work to make it to our plates and also to have fresh vegetables in the summer. Last year i took it a step further and began canning spaghetti sauce with the intention of having enough to last through the winter, and i was successful. I use the square foot gardening method which allows you to really pack in the produce and maximize yield. Each of the small blocks represents 1 square foot and I have about 200 square feet total with a strip down the middle to allow walking through so roughly 180 squares to work with. Well this year i changed up a little bit based on what i liked last season and a few things i wanted to try. Below is the layout and key for each veggie. I also now have a pressure canner and a vacuum sealer so i won't have to worry about acidity level when canning and i can freeze items without worrying about freezer burn over the winter. I never thought i would get into gardening but it is pretty cool to grow and not have to buy vegetables for about 6-9 months of the year.
  5. I have heard from some other anglers that i respect that the shadow rap is indeed the real deal. And i told myself i was going to go all summer and only by terminal tackle as it ran out......that just might change
  6. Welcome aboard. Great site and there are quite a few people from Virginia on here.
  7. Get a rack and call it good. You will use the rack for all kinds of things and not just hauling the yak around. On my old YJ i had a Garvin industries rack with basket and it was bomber and i now have a 4 door JK and have a marvin industries adventure rack. Their products are top notch and mount to the frame not the body. I personally wouldn't want to use the rack pictured above as it is using the body to hold the weight, not the rack itself. I also did not see a noticeable difference in gas mileage on either of the two jeeps, maybe 1-2mpg, once i installed the rack.
  8. Weedless doesn't mean weed free. Certain jigs are not great in the grass, I have better success with other rigs in denser grass like flukes, texas or florida rigged plastics or jika rigs.
  9. I have owned many different brands from smiths, native, maui jim, oakleys etc...when i bought my first pair of costas with the 400G lenses i was literally blown away with the quality and the distortion free, even in the periphery, lens. Unfortunately i broke the lens on them and haven't had the funds to replace them since i am out of work but i wouldn't hesitate to get another pair. they are totally worth the money. And on a side note, oakleys were the least favorite of all the sunglasses i have owned from a lens quality perspective.
  10. Marketing is great degree to have, especially with the boom of online marketing. I would also venture a guess that many don't even know what marketing entails as there are many facets of the business. Another potential avenue of study that is applicable to pretty much every single business is that of process engineering aka Six Sigma. It can be used in industries from banks to factories and everything in between which gives you tons of options for a job later on down the road.
  11. what type of water--lake, river, stream spring creek etc....are you talking about a fly rod and what type of trout are you chasing after. If yo are talking about fly rods i can provide some advice as far as conventional tackle goes, i haven't a clue what gear to use as i always use my fly rod for chasing trout.
  12. Not a sport. If poker is a sport based on the definition #3 posted above, then so are video games.
  13. As most have already mentioned, they will absolutely work in the summer time with a faster more erratic retrieve. Most of the lakes i fish have too much grass to fish them effectively but there are certain instances where they do work well. I like them on flats as a searching type bait or when fishing the edges of grass or lilly pads. Most times i will throw a soft jerk bait come summer time but there are times where the different look that a hard jerk bait will provide seems to do the trick.
  14. Both are good rods and i don't think you will be disappointed with either one.
  15. I am assuming the $200 is for the rod alone and i wouldn't argue with the Avid or my preference is the Rage series, same blank as the Avid with micro guides and different cosmetics.
  16. I will very often in windy positions use my stakeout pole to hold my position in shallower water. Sometimes it gives a different angle of approach to the fish and it does the trick. Personally i am using my stake out pole whenever i can because it locks you into a more specific place than an anchor and is less hassle.
  17. Anchor trolleys help a lot as it allows the wind to keep you facing the direction you want to be. I wouldn't trade mine for anything and am going to install another one on the right side of my kayak. As far as length of anchor line goes it all depends on what you need to keep you in place. I have seen the 3 times your depth analogy before and i don't think that applies to kayaks as much as it does larger boats. The more line you have out, the slacker the angle of the anchor line is which makes it hold better. In my kayak, unless it is super windy, I rarely need more than 1.5-2 times the depth of water i am fishing with my 5lb dumbbell plate. Another option for controlling/slowing down wind initiated drift is to use a drag chain.
  18. I just added a similar post except it was at www.sierratradingpost.com and it was for the smaller spools, 275 yards and with a coupon, it is right around $5. I never tried the stuff but i was ordering a few other things so i figured i would give it a whirl.
  19. I have seen the posts on here about Yozuri hybrid lines and while doing some online shopping at sierra trading post i found that they had some on sale for a price, with a readily available coupon, that i would give it a whirl. I figured i would share with everyone that it is available for a really good price right now if you are interested. The pound tests available are not great in all but the super soft but if you are in the market, might be worth taking a look. I picked up a spool of the ultra soft 8lb to try on my spinning set ups as i have only heard good things.
  20. Another thing to consider is traveling with the boat hull up. Just think about if it is raining on the way to the lake or on the way home. I know the scuppers will help to drain some of the water but it will get in through hatches etc... I used J cradles for my one kayak for a while and then said screw that, and just went with the boat hull up on the factory racks that i padded with some pool noodles. The J cradles turn your vehicle into a sail. I would only use them on a trailer or in a situation where you need the additional room for multiple kayaks.
  21. I am not a Nats fan but being a Phillies fan and being in their local market, i have seen them play a lot. The year with Strasburg and the innings limit was a special year for them. They had many players having career type years and they blew their shot by mismanaging his innings. He was pitching very well that season too. I also like desmond and as far as harper goes, I think he is a head case who if he can get that together can be a solid player but i don't think it is going to happen anytime soon. Clipart also had his run but like most relievers, it was short lived. They are going to be trotting out a solid pitcher every night which should keep them in most games and combine that with the sorry state of the division, i see no reason they don't get 95+ wins, or more.
  22. Twist your straps and that noise will go away. Also, I wouldn't use ratchet straps as they can put to much pressure on the yak and cause deformity over time. I have used cam buckle straps for over 5 years with no issues. I would also use bow and stern tie down straps on your kayak on that vehicle, i used to have the same one The general rule of thumb is that if the distance between your two cross bars is less than 1/3 of the kayak you should be using the front and rear straps. Yes, I know many don't and are ok but i have seen more than one instance where the rack itself gives way and the only thing holding everything together and from flying into traffic are the bow and stern tie downs, just some food for thought.
  23. The nationals will put up another good record from beating up on their sorry division and then get beat in the playoffs, just like the past few years. Their best shot was the year they mismanaged Strasburg and were clicking on all cylinders and instead of working his innings like they should have throughout the entire season in a manner that lets him pitch in the postseason, they just shut him down assuming they would be back.
  24. yeah, the phillies are going to stink yet again this season. I am not even going to get the MLB package this season.....well i say that but i probably will still ned up getting it lol
  25. One thing that can help with gaining permission is that in Hanover, there is an online GIS site that enables you to find out who the owner of any piece of property is which helps in gaining permission. I also have had a lot of good luck at the powhatan lakes but that was in a kayak. There are some good fish in there and i once caught a huge crappie that measured 16". The powhatan ponds are also awesome if you are looking to target some big carp. I have caught some big ones out there on the fly rod.
