  1. you aren't going to get rid of them and study after study has shown they have no negative impact on the fish population and if anything they are good for the overall health of a body of water. I still want to catch one but haven't taken the time to go do it yet.
  2. 12 or 15lb yozuri hybrid for me and it works great.
  3. yup. Their loss was pretty bad this week too. Could be a real ugly game. Wentz is playing well though which is good to see after coming off his injury.
  4. Eagles had another bipolar game and were crushed by a roughing the passer cal that led to the vikings only offensive TD of the game. It boggles my mind the mental errors this team is making after being a well disciplined team last season. I am hoping that this is just everyone getting used to everyone else coming back form injuries etc but if we don't right the ship against the giants on thursday, our season is all but toast.
  5. I practice getting into my kayak with cold weather gear every season just to make sure I still can do it. Majority of places i fish the effort needed to get in, while manageable is probably more than just making my way back to a spot shallow enough to get things sorted out. I have been fortunate to not have to do it in a real situation but i know I am prepared should it happen. I always cringe when i am out on those warmer days in the winter when water temps are still in the 40's and i see guys out in jeans and sweatshirts paddling around and fishing. I usually try and stay somewhat within shouting distance should they need help.
  6. I have lived in the richmond area for close to 15 years and i haven't taken the kayak out there yet...maybe i will this winter when it probably won't be as crowded.
  7. a lot of vehicles set of a check engine light at specific intervals to remind you of needing service. 100k is usually one of them too. Or she could have just not screwed the gas cap on tight enough too. I got like a $30 code reader and it helps me to tell whats going on in my mini cooper (BMW innards) and while i can't reset my check engine light code, i know if it is a real code being thrown or just a reminder deal.
  8. I can't think of any reason why that would be an issue.
  9. Polar bear is awesome stuff if you can find it. I had a patch of it i used for tying smallmouth flies about 15 years ago.
  10. I have heard this before and when i was guiding and teaching fly casting i found the faster action rods were better for beginners. Of course that may have been my preference and subsequent teaching style coming through too so who knows lol
  11. don't waste money on a high dollar reel. Find one that balances with your rod and that will be real hard to do online. Keep an eye out instead for a high quality fly line. A high quality fly line will make your life much easier as a beginner. I always recommend a decent Weight Forward (WF) line as it will help to turn over the flies better. I started fishing with a Cortland combo probably 20+ years ago and it did me well till I broke it. Caught lots of fish ranging from native brookies up to large carp. The carp catches are when i realized i did need a reel once in a while. I like 9' rods in tight quarters because i can roll cast with them with more accuracy and distance which is probably 90% of the casting i would do in the mountain streams. On the flip side i also like super short rods in the same situations for bushwhacking and keeping myself out of trouble with overhanging trees...half dozen of one 6 of the other
  12. I like them and fish them regularly. They won't be as snag free as others mentioned but they will catch fish for sure.
  13. Breathable waders with the appropriate synthetic insulation underneath for the conditions. Synthetic top layers and usually a waterproof breathable shell. Stay away from anything not synthetic, I know many like wool and there ae some good options out there but if it gets wet, it holds a lot of water while synthetic won't and it will dry out much more quickly. I have tested my set up and no water gets in my waders should i take a dunk. If i fished a lot of moving water i'd probably just invest in a dry suit and be done with it but since i stay on flat water when the water temps get below around 50 i am not too concerned. the other thing to keep on hand is some dry clothes and some materials to make a fire. If you get wet it is crucial to get dry clothes on if possible as well as make a fire to warm up if you are a ways from the ramp. Hypothermia is no joke and you won't realize it is setting in till it is too late. I also keep a few pairs of fleece fingerless gloves that helps to take the chill off and i can replace them as they get wet. A thermos or insulated cup of a hot beverage of your choice also helps as well. Big thing is to be prepared for the worst and keep the trips to areas yo are very familiar with and you should be ok. Some of the best fishing is in the colder weather even though you may not get as many bites, the ones you get are usually quality fish. Some of my largest fish have been caught in sub 40 degree water.
  14. Yeah i know better than to do something that idiotic in a kayak. It is like i tell people about road cycling. Yeah i have the same rights as a car and people are supposed to yield but it doesn't do me much good to be laying in a ditch wondering if i am gonna make it yelling, but i was in the right!!
  15. I'd rather have a guy go by me on plane than not. The wake created isn't as large and in a kayak like I am, that makes a difference.
  16. Nothing this week but i am looking forward to learning something this next weekend for sure
  17. if you have the space a ceiling rack works well. I used one in my 4 door wrangler and was able to leave the reels in place.
  18. this has always been the case. The big difference is rule changes combined with better nutrition and training etc..has led the most important position, the QB, to be able to play a much longer effective career. The league shifts power when new QB come to the table. Right now there are a good amount of good to great QB that are young and teams are being built more wisely. I am curious to see what the walrus can do with Mahomes as he seems to be able to maximize the play of QBs no matter where and who they are. I'd like nothing more than the Eagles to beat the Chiefs in a Super Bowl
  19. I fished Lake Rooty yesterday for a little while and caught one small one. That lake has gone through some stuff for sure. When i was working in innsbrook 5 years ago I could count on catching between 2-3 during my lunch break just about every day. There are still lots of sunnies in there but bass wise not so much. I have see na few large carp i nether too which i may have to target on the fly rod one of these days....
  20. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see the lions win tonight.
  21. Wentz looked decent in his inaugural game after his injury. the defense continues to impress each week and the offense will get it together, hopefully, when a few of the key pieces come off of their injuries. Dallas is looking like trash right now and i doubt anyone picked Washington and the Bills to win today
  22. that is pretty much your only option. Get a reel that balances more easily and since the reel is the heavy part it isn't like you can add weight to the butt end to make it more balanced.
  23. so you literally sat there and had a casting contest with a person to see who could cast more frequently? Were all casts the same distance, same retrieve rate reels and reeled the exact same speed, same line and weight? I am calling BS on this one, sorry... Now all that being said i don't think it matters too much on number of casts but by the definition of the word casting with one hand and retrieving with the other is more efficient. There is no way to argue it isn't because each had does one thing.
  24. with that many people and that much gear, i'd take another car lol
  25. This is probably in the 1k range but luckily I didn't pay that much this thing could cast a wet sock if you needed it to....
