  1. Shakespeare makes a nice little bass fishing starter kit. I actually bought it when I was first starting out. Maybe not the highest quality but its only 30 bucks and his parents may not be too keen on throwing down too much money. Comes with rod, reel with line pre-spooled, and a lure kit including hooks, weights, lizards, shaky worms, a squarebill crank, and some other stuff. The BPS website has it but I've also seen it at WalMart. http://www.basspro.com/Shakespeare-Catch-More-Fish-Rod-and-Reel-Combo-for-Bass/product/10206303/
  2. If you know there's fish in there, why give up? If it were me, I'd keep fishing it as long as I could. Especially if the next lakes are an hour away. If you know where those Xmas trees are, fish around them. They make for really good fish attracters. When you catch fish, take note of when/where you caught them and what the weather conditions were like.
  3. Bought some Popeye's Fried Chicken and Cajun fries. Now that's good eatin'.
  4. Thanks you guys. I'm proud of her. She was getting pretty upset that all she was catching was pickerel. Even during the winter months when we were trout fishing that's all she got. You can tell from the pictures that she's thrilled to death about her first bass. She's even happy about her pickerel for a change.
  5. Welcome! If its info and advice your looking for, you've come to the right spot.
  6. Nothing wrong with a cabin on the lake and a few days of nothing but fishing. Sounds like my idea of heaven. Hope everything stays good with your mom.
  7. My wife a I fished Smithville Lake down here in Caroline County today. Caught a couple small to average size largemouth and we each caught a new personal best chain pickerel.
  8. Congrats on your first jig bass!
  9. If I had to guess, I'd say 2.5-3 would be about right for the big one. Whatever it weighs, nice fish!
  10. Nice looking fish...congrats!
  11. Yup...she out-fished me 3 to 2. She just started at the end of last season, didn't really go much and only caught a couple of chain pickerel. This year she's been going more but not catching anything. Well today we tried a new pond but it turned out to not be much more than an foot deep mud puddle so we went to one of our usual spots instead. Hadn't been there for 20 minutes when she pulls in her first bass ever on a chartreuse Strike King spinnerbait. So I snap the pic, decide to put on a spinnerbait myself and before I can even get it tied on, she has her second bass and a new PB pickerel! Like rapid fire in only 5 casts. I really wanted to start casting right around where she was but it was a small area so I left her to it and moved on down the dam. A short while later I caught a small largemouth and then later on I caught my own new PB chain pickerel. I've caught others of similar length but this one was fat. You can't really tell from the pic but it was heavy! Put up a hell of a fight too. Pulled drag like nobody's business and it went aerial 4 or 5 times. Didn't weigh it though cuz it was foul hooked under the chin and I took a while getting the hook out. Just wanted to get it back in the water. The bass weren't anything to write home about but we both got new PB pickerels. All in all I'd say it was a good day.
  12. Lost mine yesterday. Funny enough, once again, I said 'one last cast'. Except this time my last cast found me over a tree branch as well as snagged on a stump. It wasn't a good day.
  13. Thanks guys. I tried it out a bit today. Didn't catch anything but now I have a good idea of how I need to fish it.
  14. Nice man...that 6 is chunky!
  15. So I just walk it like a spook, just underwater?
  16. I was in WalMart the other night and they had a bargain bin full of these. They were only like 2 bucks so I figured why not? Even with my limited fishing experience, I can tell the hooks are garbage and need replacing but that's not a big deal. The package says Suspending Twitch Bait. It looks like a jerkbait but there's no lip on it. I've never fished jerkbaits but I'm pretty sure all the one's I've seen on the BPS/TW websites have lips on them. Is this bait fished the same way? Also it says 'Saltwater'. If its a bait made for saltwater, will fishing it in fresh water affect the buoyancy/the way it suspends?
  17. Very good point. Didn't really think about that.
  18. I just started fishing spinnerbaits this season. I have several Strike King ones and I like them a lot but if your just getting into them and still deciding whether or not you like them or not, WalMart has their own brand of spinnerbaits for buck a piece. For soft plastics, I've been liking Rage Tail lately. Haven't done much jig fishing so I can't really say anything there.
  19. Thanks everyone. And yeah, my last casts usually turn into 15 or 20 more too. But this time it really was my last. After catching that one I wanted to keep fishing but I had been up all night and had to get home and catch a couple hours of sleep before work.
  20. Mine was small but not tiny. Around 9 inches. And I have to add, LOL at PondHunters avatar.
  21. I was gonna say 7lbs pushing towards 8. I'm still working on my weight guess-timations. I have a spring scale but I don't use it often unless its a decent fish. Don't see much of a point in weighing 12 inch fish. I recently started watching fishing shows on the Outdoor Channel like Major League Fishing and I try and guess the weights before the actual weight is given. I'm actually getting pretty good at.
  22. Nice!
