  1. I've been meaning to do this , A lot less expensive than buying a new 50 dollar box .
  2. I'm feeling a little nostalgic with tears running down my cheeks . How about a thread that shows our loved ones enjoying this great sport .. My grandoa on left . My dad with some MarkTwain lake channels and blues Mom , landing a carp My uncle still fishing after neck surgery. My sons first bass .
  3. Theres my old fishing buddy on the left . My grandpa and Mr. Sims in a photo dated from the 60's . Good ol boys . The fish were caught at the grain terminal , a local hot spot for carp fishing . These fish were eaten and enjoyed very much . Its the way I was raised . I wish I had those old rod and reels . I do have a split bamboo casting rod that was his . I had it re-glued , finished and new eyes added . Its one of my most cherished possessions .
  4. Did you see gulls in the area ? I always take note of where the gulls are , even if they are on the banks . The last couple of weeks I have been seeing gulls hovering over a shallow flat on the Mississippi river . It must be an easy place to pick off dying shad .If thats the case it should harbor catfish too . Ive been thinking about finding some fresh shad and try for some channel cats there .
  5. My dad uses spincasters [ Zebco ] only . When he tries using my left handed spinning equipment , he holds it upside down and reels backwards . LOL So , its my job to replace his reels and keep fresh line on them just so he can fish competently .
  6. My findings too . Usually I dont have red on the jig but on the trailer instead . Uncle Josh use to make bright orange pork frogs and they worked well in cold muddy water . Fish them in shallow cover on a steep bank s-l-o-w . Some days it would be the only way I could figure out how to get a bite .
  7. Whatever it is , its one of the coolest things I have ever seen . They catch them in one of the rivers around here , but I have never seen one . Neato . A walking fish .
  8. Yeah , carp are completely different than your typical white meat fish . If you compare it to crappie, walleye .... then you will be greatly disappointed . It use to be quite popular along the Mississippi and inexpensive . Carp fish fries were frequent but now that the fish markets are gone they are rare . There are still those who eat them , mostly poor people , but they have to score them with a knife , which takes a lot of time and hard to get good results . I dont even try . I gave a bunch away at my camp last year , the people I gave it too invited me for a fish fry the next week . I would have accepted but was not there at the time .
  9. I would love to have seen that .
  10. Fishing 10 to 20 foot deep with a bass jig and trailer I'm comfortable with 1/4 to 1/2 ounce jigs . 3/8 being a good choice to start with .
  11. Most of my crankbaits will be shad colored like the sexy shad or chartreuse like fire tiger .
  12. I like to show off and take selfies of big bass . I have a system . I use a small 6 inch flexible tripod pre mounted on a camera . If I'm in a jon boat . I put the bass on a metal stringer { which puts only a tiny hole in its mouth } to get it back in the water . I set the camera up with the timer set at 10 seconds . Then as quick as I can get the fish off the stringer and push the button . My camera has a setting that will take six pictures at six different settings , so two pictures = 12 . I'm in such a hurry that sometimes I forget to smile and look mad .
  13. I have never fished that type of water . There is some around but have never been given permission to fish them . A friend caught a double digit from a quarry in Illinois . He took the measurements and had a replica made . I know it would be easy to fake it but I believe this guy . Theres a lot of people I would just roll my eyes at . LOL . Anyhow , he caught it on a Rattle Trap .
  14. whoops .wrong thread . LOL
  15. I have caught a lot of bass on the 4 inch Larew Salt Craw in the past but I dont have time to fish everything . A lot of productive lures end up not getting the playing time they deserve . Plus all my tackle fits in one gear bag , so lots of stuff gets left behind . I'll have to squeeze some Salt Craws in there for next season .

hamma I wish it was for me . Ive been doing this for decades and I want everything perfect and straight. I just cant get it . The hook shank is hardly ever centered in the middle , The point exits off center and either too close or too far away . I end up with a crooked , bent sideways running bait . To combat this I just purchased some short shank jig heads from DOA , shorter shanks = less room for error and a more flexible , livelier bait . I actually bend crappie hooks to a wider gap and shorter shank which is a risky maneuver , thats why I went the DOA route . To answer your question I usually reach for a crankbait the most under perfect conditions . Ive had several 100 fish days or close to it and they are usually on a crank of some sort .
  17. I concur . Look closely and you will see the boat is soaked . It was lightly raining in July when a bass sucked this buzzbait under . The lure just disappeared . You can see the blade between the jaw and my hand .
  18. I dont exactly know how I do it sitting here in the recliner . I get the buzzbait moving toward me a split second before it hits the water .I think I'm pulling back on the rod a bit . When done right it doesnt sink a bit .
  19. A buzzbzit should be moving as soon as it touches down .Do not allow them to sink .
  20. They dont work well early , for me anyhow. I have luck with them from post spawn to early winter .
  21. What do you suppose would happen if you put a suspend dot off to the side to make it off balance and then tune it ? Do you think they would have that hunting action anglers are after ?
  22. My mom landing a carp at the camp.
  23. I have camper on the banks of shallow mississippi river backwater protected by a levee .Its a decent bass place in spots , not so hot where I am located at . So I fish for carp a lot . Man , I have learned a lot about carp fishing since locating there . I set those rods in well anchored holders and wait . When a carp hooks up and bolts those rods lay flat . Its a blast .
  24. My dad was in korea during the war and I have photos of service men fishing that he took .
