The winner of the boat will receive a 1099 for the 33K, which is included in his income and he pays income tax on that. That could cost him around 10K. When he sells the certificate, he cannot legally collect sales tax nor does he have the responsibility to do so because he doesn't have a sales tax license from the state. When the certificate buyer picks up his boat at an authorized dealer, the dealer will either collect sales tax on the boat (for 33K sales price, the stated value of the certificate) or the buyer will have to pay when he registers the boat (depends on how the state collects the tax). There should be no sales tax on the certificate, it is no different than buying a gift certicate, no tax until the certificate is used to make a purchase. If the winner uses the certificate and takes possesion of the boat, then both will pay sales tax as stated in the post above.

I've used flipping switch reels for pitching also, just never with the switch in the flipping mode. some 40 years of using a baitcaster and I haven't figured out how to keep the spool release down with my thumb and still control the spool properly when pitching. There have been several other threads concerning this very subject with posters stating they have released the spool release when pitching and have ruined the gears or that in the heat of the moment, make a regular cast and strip the gears. That's why I have a dedicated flipping stick and don't use it for any thing else.

The flippin' switch should NEVER be used when pitching. That's not what it is for. The whole idea for the flipping switch is so that the angler can let out enough line to flip without having to re-engage the free spool with the reel handle, not to release the spool to fip cast and then let go of the release bar. Using it for pitching is a good way to tear the gears out of your reel.

Not trying be a smat a.. here, but you said you could "put it back together and use it like a 2 piece rod". Are you saing the rod did not snap in two but separated into two pieces? I looked at the link you provided and a number of those rods are two piece. If the rod was assembled when you bought the combo, you may have picked up a two piece rod by mistake. I have been buying rods for over forty years and just recently bought an ultralight rod off the rack that I thought was one piece and found out later when I was stringing it that it was in fact a two piece; the ferule just looked like part of the wrap.

The only Pflueger Element I have seen was part of a cheap combo at Academy Sports.

I don't know if he still uses glass crankbait rods, but RC was the big proponent of glass rods for crankbaits. The original Team Daiwa Rick Clunn crankbait rod was a 7 footer with a graphite butt section blending into a fiberglass tip. The tip was clear like an ugly stick.
