I'VE HAD IT WITH SHIMANO  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RANT

Recommended Posts

I will never buy another shimano product again , a few years back i bought a sustain 2500 fd , it was a nice reel but not worth the 229.00 they get for them. A couple months ago i bought a new stradic fi the first time i used it the bail broke so i brought it back and bought a daiwa tierra (nice reel for the money) last night i had a store credit so i thought i'd give shimano another chance , so i bought another stradic fi and right out of the box it's making a grinding noise . I tried oiling i w/ the oil that shimano included w/the reel and it still makes the noise so just to save myself another 60 mi trip back to the store i tried quantum hot sauce reel lube STILL MAKES THE NOISE ! , finally i drove it all the way back to the store and they acknoleged the noise and open the maintence port saw the hot sauce and won't give me my money back or an even exchange because they say by using the quantum hot sauce it broke down the factory lube and that's what's causing the grinding. I'VE HAD IT !!!!! NO MORE SHIMANO AND I'M DONE DEALING W/ THAT STORE TOO !!!!!!!!

$15

seriously though, can you clean off the hot sauce and have someone else return it for you?

ive owned dozens of shimano reels and never had a problem. sounds like horrible luck.

Nothing is worse than buying something and it is damaged right out of the box. Like my Dad always says the money you are paying for the item is perfect you should get perfect merchandise in return.

The only mistake I see you make was If it was grinding right out of the box, try the lube that came with the reel. If that didn't work bring it back to the store immediately. Do not try another brand of lube!

Next time you are buying something 60 miles away from your house pull the item out of the box in the store and test it out. It will save you a trip.

You must have bad karma my man, I 've never purchased any Sheemano product on any store right there on the flesh, I 've always purchased them unseen and untried from on-line sources and never ever had any problem with them.

i pretty much always check a reel before i leave the store but the store closed at 9:00 and it was 9:10 and since shimano has always had a fairly good rep. i thought it was pretty near impossible to get 2 bad ones in a row .  as far as the hot sauce goes i just thought i'd give it a try to save myself another trip to the store , i've returned reels before and they never opened the reel or else i never would have tried it.

I'd argue with the manager on that.  You said you're done with that store so what do you have to lose??  I'd tell them specificly it was doing that right out of the box and that's the only reason you added the Hot Sauce to see if it would help and save a 60 mile drive.  Now you've made that drive twice over this (you will have at that time anyway) and you want your money back.  It's worth the try anyway.  If it's a big box store like Dick's or some place then you might have a shot but if it's just a local tackle shop that's privately owned then probaby not.

RW already posted this over on the Shimano boards for him.

And this post in the Shimano forum sums up the Hot Sauce problem http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1222306180

Shorehugger,

I have been servicing Shimano® reels for over 25 years now. I have been posting on this forum since 05. Every time some one asked about using Hot Sauce in any reel other than Quantum I have rebutted it stating that if the MFG wanted hot sauce used in their reels they would add it to the box. Ask any of the long time posters about my thoughts on Hot Sauce.....

Tight Lines!!!

I meant no offense RM, from reading your posts I have the upmost respect for you. I was just posting the link to show Bronzeback01 that the subject of hot sauce has come up in the Shimano forums.

I agree with you totally on this subject. I would not have used anything other than the lube that came with the reel.

So are you saying that we should only be using the lubes that come with the reels.  I am seriously curious about this.  Shiamano doesn't give me greese with my reels.  My Sustain just came with a small bottle of oil.  Is it just Hot Sauce you are against?

You can purchase Shimano reel grease as easily as you can purchase Hot Sauce.

Actually and now that you mention it, no manufacturer I 've purchased reels from ( Shimano, Daiwa and Abu ) has given me reel grease for that matter, reel oil yes ( and not in every model ), reel grease, nope.

From what I have personally seen, both Hot Sauce oil and grease stain brass, plastic gears and other metal parts it gets on.  It comes out of brass with Naphtha, but I'd rather use something like Simple Green to clean the reels.  An OEM has to recommend using OEM oil, grease, and parts.  Otherwise, warranty issues arise, and truthfully, their only experience would be limited to using their products.  Imagine how much it would add to the cost of a reel for them to test all the available oils on the market?  Its not like the automobile industry, where there are ISO and SAE standards for both the oil and engine manufacture.

In my experience, you are never wrong to use OEM oil and grease on the corresponding reels.  many companies will do this maintenance for you.  I know Daiwa does it, not sure about Shimano.  At any rate, in my experience (much less than RM - about ten years of working on reels) Shimano Drag Grease is the best bar none.  For most small magnetic spool applications, Rocket Fuel Red Label works well.  Better casters will like the Original Yellow label.  The TX. grade oil is ridiculous, especially with a super tuned reels.  Jighead turned me on to it, and its awesome.  Again, there are warranty issues, and customers that ask for it, get it.  otherwise, use what the OEMs use.  Most of my own reels are WAYYYY out of warranty anyway, and some only retain the frame as still original.  I do have a brand new Daiwa Sol, and that gets nothing but the oil that came with it.

How is that Shimano or the store's fault?

If I were Shimano, I'd say good riddance and don't let the door hit you where the Good Lord split you.

IMO the problems you state present an interesting pattern.  Are you using your reels to drive nails or as a bottle opener?

If you want to order it from the internet, yeah. It is another story if you want to buy it in person.

I know, that is what I am saying. Reel Mech says that if Shimano wanted us to use it, then it would be in the Shimano box.

I had the same problem with my stella, grinding gears, gritty feeling, thing is even if he sent back to shimano, theres a good chance the problem would still exist! also if gears are supoosed to greased why does shimano put oil in nearly every reel box, except the stella?now i dont know how many people have tried to get the permalube,{small metal tube of grease} but everytime i asked for it. i was told they dont sell it!always gave me the starrdragerrgrease! just one of the many reasons i gave shimano the heave ho!

like most have said. ALWAYS try the reel at the counter to make sure there is no problems. when i bought my most recent reel. i played played with the thing for 10 minutes, basically do everything i can do to it. make sure things are perectly working. I don't wanan take it home playing with it on my lap, reeling very fast and finding out there is something wrong with it whether its 60 miles or 6 miles. save urself the hassle.

the grinding was shimanos fault i wouldn't have put the grease in the first place if it wasn't grinding.

Make sure it's a 200 series, your trailer may roll right over a 100.   :)

reel mech wrote:

The main reason they (the MFG's) place only oil is that the manuals only recommend the angler do just the basic lubrication on the outside of the reel (you don't grease anything on the outside of the reel). The grease is only used on gear teeth and in certain areas for saltwater reels in the internals, and that should only be done by a qualified service shop/factory, not the angler.

Not to be a p.i.t.a.  then why does shimano have the maitainance port right over the gears?if i remember my stella manual, said to grease/oil? the gears every 5 times of fishing or if the reel has not been used in 30 days.hey, dont get me wrong. i think shimano and Daiwa want the Anglers to open thier reels, just so we can screw something up. :) have to pay them reel mech's paychecks somehow, might as well be us!
