It is a long story and I'm in no position to speak for Big O, but we had a conversation about this at Kentucky Lake. The short version is that SK found that green pumpkin was almost identical to black in low light situations. Buy a pack of GP Anacondas and hold one up to a light. While doesn't absorb all light, it does a d**n good job of trying.

As for the topic at hand, there should be a diagram in the installation instructions that shows the proper placement for the transducer. If memory serves, I've read about quite a few people installing the Side Imaging transducer on their jackplate. If the hull of your 175 is the same as my 185, the stern should be stepped in a few inches below the motor mount. Your old transducer was probably mounted on the edge of that step. I wouldn't use anything less than 15 lb. flourocarbon for carolina rigging. As for the braid suggestions, if you fish anywhere near rock, don't bother with braid.

What side beam? Humminbird offers several different tranducers with varying cone angles. The lower priced HB's utilize a 20* beam (very narrow). The rest feature a 20*/60* DualBeam tranducer that can be combined or displayed separately on the graph. There is the Quadrabeam Plus that offers a 90* view of the bottom. The 3D Plus utilizes six beams to offer a unique 3D view of the bottom. The key to any knot is proper lubrication. When tying a palomar with flourocarbon, you must take special care to coat the knot with spit and slowly cinch using the tag end. Try tying a knot without spit and using the mainline to cinch. The line above the knot will look wavy like curly hair. That is due to the friction generated from cinching the knot. Now do the same thing, but get the knot good and wet and cinch by pulling the tag end. The line shouldn't be curly. Patience and lubrication is what it takes. I've never used anything but a palomar with flourocarbon and I've never had a knot break. I may have to cut & retie on occasion if I've gotten in a hurry, but that's about it.
