  1. Backing is subjective, I typically put some regular mono on for a filler. I do it to cut down on cost. I have also spooled new reels without a filler. I havent noticed a difference in casting distance. I will say this, dont put too much backing on. A couple of times I have put on more than I thought, and ended up seeing the knot when I make a long cast. If you arent worried about the cost, I would say just spool it up without backing.

  3. As a boater, I never expect anything from a non boater, and I also never ask for anything. Im going fishing either way, so its not like its costing anything extra to have someone else in the boat. Alot of times they will throw me some gas money at the end of the day which is cool, but not necessary. I like to feel like I am pretty good about giving the guy some good water to fish as well, and not completely rear-ending them the entire time. I try to keep the boat in a good position for both of us. If its in a singles tournament, honestly the only time they see the front of the boat is if im eating or retying a bunch of stuff. If its a team tourney(which is most of the time for me) or fun fishing, we will take turns at the front of the boat.
  4. What theory might this be? All I did was give my opinion on bed fishing, and got attacked for it. I never said bed fishing hurt the spawn in any way. Never said it had any affect on the bass population. I just personally dont think its right to purposely catch a fish trying to lay eggs, then throw her in your livewell only to let her go miles away from where she was trying to spawn. Obviously, everyones opinions are different, but you know what they say-opinons are like a-holes, everybody has one and some people are one.
  5. Its not hauling around just any fish, its hauling around a fish that is trying to spawn. Thats why I dont fish tournaments during the spawn. As for Lund Explorer, he fired first. Infact, all he has done in this thread is quote people and bash them. But, its the internet, and we all know how that goes.
  6. First, I told you it may sound crazy, but I dont care. I just expressed my opinion on the subject, like the OP asked. Second, your reply didnt come off " tounge in cheek" to me. Im not going to have a battle of witts against an unarmed man.
  7. I think you need to do some research on what happens when the bass spawn if you think that "mama" hangs around with her "babies" 2 months after they hatch.
  8. I stayed there many times, Andy is a nice guy. I believe he has some good maps right there in the check in office, thats where I got mine when I first went up there.
  9. I fish druing the spawn, but I dont target bass on beds. Its not really my thing. Guys do it, and thats fine. For me personally, I have a problem with it when it comes to tournaments. Now, my analogy might sound crazy, but here it is anyway. I think of bed fishing in touneys like this: I wouldnt want someone kidnapping my 8 month pregnant wife, throwing her in a dark van, driving around with her for 7 hours and letting her go miles away from her bed, completely unaware of where she is. May sound completely crazy, but I dont care. Its essentially the same thing.
  10. Great lake to fish, I have been going there for 12 years. I usually go up in August, topwater action early and late for sure. Deep points dragging jigs, but dont be afraid to fish shallow either. There are a couple of really nice shallow weedy coves that I have caught big ones out of, im talking 2ft or less. One common spot for smallies is the lighthouse. There are alot of humps as well. There is also a beaver d**n thats usually good for a few fish. You will definitely enjoy your trip.
  11. I havent been up there in May, nor have I been to China lake. However, I typically go to Miane for a week in late August. The fishing is always great for me that time of year, alot of 5lbers. I dont think you can go wrong with either time frame. Maine is an awesome state to fish.
  12. I have a buddy who has a shield, he let me fire it a few weeks ago. Its a really nice pistol, as is anything in the M&P line. I say go for it, then again im not much of a glock fan to begin with. They dont fit my hand good at all, thats really the only reason I dont like them.
  13. I had two of the older Citicas, the ones they made when they had the first re-design of the curado. Brand new reels, one of them the centrifugal brake fell apart, the other the worm gear broke. Coincidence or not? No idea. But I havent bought a Shimano reel since.
  14. 26 hour drive straight through, 1661 miles one way. Honestly, if I had more vacation time, I would do it. I drove to Kentucky Lake one year, that was about 20 hours straight through (obviously I didnt drive that alone), whats another 6 hours? LOL One day I will make it to one of these!
  15. You're right, you shouldnt, but for some reason with those sx's you kind of have to. All of my other abu's adjust easily, no shaking involved. Im not sure what the hell they did different to the revo sx to make it such a pain, but they sure did do a good job. If you google revo adjusting, 90% of the people have a problem with the sx.
  16. Do you guys change your trebles on cranks and such as soon as you buy them? Or do you use what comes on there for a while then change them out after? What type of replacement hooks are you using?
  17. Cashion rods are also made in the USA.
  18. Not trying to be a d-bag here, but are you sure the reel is adjusted properly? I had this problem with my Revo Sx's, you just have to adust it just right-its very picky, for me at least anyway. I bought 2 of them last year, and would have constant issues with the line being loose on the spool more than backlashing every cast. The way I adjusted mine is, turn the brake off, then adjust the spool tention knob to where you have to shake the lure a bit to get it to fall. Then make some practice casts adjusting the brake until you find the sweet spot. For some reason, these particular reels need to have the spool tension knob tighter than most reels. I was actually considering selling them. Luckily I am using them for specific lures, so once I got the adjustment down they have been perfect ever since.
  19. Well I have decided to go with the Dobyns. Right now I can get a good deal on either a DX703c or a DX744c. Im going to make this rod a dedicated T-rig rod up to 3/8, fishing mostly vegitation and rocks. Will the 744 work for this, or should I go with the 703?
  20. This is one of the things im concerned about. Never owning a rod that costs that much money, I dont want to buy one and say to myself, I dont see a difference. Then wonder why I spent so much on a rod that I dont see a difference in, fishability wise. Right now im leaning towards a Champion 734c, but Im also looking at the Cashion rods as well. They seem to get pretty good reviews. As far as St Croix goes, I have only fished with a Mojo. I didnt like how it fished, felt tip heavy to me.
  21. With the XF action I felt like I was pulling the bait away from the fish, I missed quite a few. I was looking at the Dobyns Champion which everyone seems to love, ST Croix LTB, and the new St Croix Avid X looks nice. As far as the cheaper rods, I have a Carbonlite that I like, so I would look at them as well.
  22. Last season I bought 2 rods, one for texas rigs and one for jigs. I used them a bit, didnt really care for them too much because of the XF tip. I couldnt get fast tips because they didnt make them that way. Anyway, im going to buy something new, and im wondering if I should buy two good $100 rods, or buy one really good rod for texas rigs, which I throw most often. I dont throw jigs a ton, but I do have a rod that I can use for jigs if I go the more expensive route. So , which do you think the better way to go would be? Thanks in advance
  23. For the worst Im gonna say RI, and I live here. There just isnt enough big water, I think its like 20,700 acres of water TOTAL. The biggest lake in the state is 1,051 acres, with only 4 bigger than 500 acres. So imagine all the tournaments on small lakes, yes there are 25 boat tournaments here on 100 acre lakes. They get POUNDED. Not to mention Bass managment is pretty much doesnt exist, all the state really cares about are their salt water ramps and their trout lakes. Freshwater ramps are mostly HORRIBLE, some are decent, some lakes dont have ramps. Three quarters of the lakes and ponds are 10hp and under, unless you have a permit for a tournament, then its anything goes. All that being said, there are big fish here, but in recent years I havent heard of anything over 8lbs. Those are few and far between, a 4lber is a big fish in this state.
  24. Same exact thing happened to me, now I have to reglue the back deck with the stuff from the depot.
