Powell and Quail Creek are great largemouth bass fisheries, with Quail Creek probably the best all around largemouth fishery in the state. Pelican Lake near Vernal holds large numbers of bass and some huge bluegill, though most bass are under 4 pounds there. Jordanelle holds some big smallmouth and some largemouth as well. Don't overlook Recapture Reservoir near Blanding, as well as Deer Creek and Starvation for smallmouth bass. At Powell, don't be afraid to harvest some smallmouth. There are too many in there and not many over 3 - 4 pounds. Fantastic place to catch 100 smallies in a day though, though most will be 1 - 2 pounds.

I have always used 15 - 20 yards of mono backing and had NO issues at all.

If you mean the 4" super speed craw, it's a really good pitchin' and flippin' bait. I use a 3/0 EWG and a parasite head.

Yeah the shad flat out catches tons of fish. I find on many lakes it outproduces a buzzbait 2 to 1.

Since it's a park it's not private. Just carry that around as proof.

How do you guys like the Rage Toad in comparison with the Shad? Does it make as much noise? How is the hookup rate and does it stay straight well? I use the shad and it performs great in all the above areas, just wondering how the Toad is different.

Inline spinners are fantastic for stream smallies. Panther martins are my favorite, but Mepps are good too. I prefer the bigger models, the #9 and #15 panther martins, and the #3 and #4 mepps.

Plenty of powerade or gatorade, and sunblock. Also lip balm and some ibuprofen, and sometimes a little food.

Rage shad and hollow frogs.

The old hula grub is an overlooked flippin' and pitchin' bait when a more subtle presentation is needed. Usually only lasts for a couple fish, but with some parasite clips and mend it you won't have to buy tons of packages. I'm another who loves the sluggo. The fluke rocks and is better all around, but when the fish are shallower and turned way off, the dying sluggo will mop them up at times better than the fluke.

Flukes are tried and true and just flat out work. I also like Sluggos and Bass Assassins as well. If you are having troubles with the bait sliding down the hook, pick up some parasite clips from parasiteweights.com. They are just flat out great products. Mend it is an awesome thing to have too. Sluggos don't cast as well or sink as well as the fluke, but they have a good wiggle and are great when a shallower presentation is needed.

Cool. I was looking to use 17 pound mono for my swimbaits.

The main thing is to harvest plenty of small pike and let the bigger pike go. Big pike eat lots of small pike and that is the best way to keep the population under control. When too many big pike are harvested, the population of pike can explode due to lack of predation. Most of our pike lakes around here have decent bass fishing too. The pike eat mostly perch and trout in this state.

Since my favorite spinnerbait is no longer in production, I've decided to make my own. Anyways, I found most of the stuff I need on lurepartsonline.com. When I'm adding the larger blade on a ball bearing swivel on the end of the bait, do I just twist and bend the wire frame so the swivel holds?

They are very good bass lures, but are at their best when fishing smallmouth in rivers. I use the #9 and #15 panther martins and slay the smallies up to 5 pounds. Don't overlook them for largemouth either, especially in clear, pressured water without a lot of vegetation. Go with the biggest baits possible for better casting distance, faster sink rate, and to help keep the dinks and panfish off of them.

Yeah I already looked at all those stores, and they have a very small selection.

I'm looking for a swimbait reel to hold heavy line for big swimbaits up to 4 ounces. It says this reel comes with a 6 pin centrifugal brake. I couldn't for the life of me find where to access the brake on the reel the other day when scoping it out in the store. All my other baitcasters that have the 6 pin brake have a removable side plate on the left hand side of the reel (I'm right handed). Does anyone have this reel and could help me out???

Yeah they make plain clips and I use them on ALL my plastics! They keep baits from sliding down the hook, help your hookup rate, and help hold them on the hook. You will catch twice as many fish before you have to replace your plastic. parasiteweights.com
