Winter 2022-23
Temps in the mid 80s next week in Saratoga County, NY. We only had thaw within the last week. Spring and fall seem like they are going extinct. We go from subfreezing to summer weather in the spring and then fall goes from 90 degrees in September to skim ice by October.

are you retired? do you fish ALL the time?
When I retire sometime in the next several thousand years, I will run and never look back. Was born a laborer, will die a laborer. The labor is the only part I like. The social aspect of work makes me sick. It’s so superficial and gross IMO. And yes, I will be fishing every morning when I’m retired.

The Beer Is Brewing, The Trash Is Flying, and The Race For The Pennant Is On!
Seems like that’s been the way the Braves’ have been doing it the last few years. They’re looking very impressive to start the season even with the couple hopefully minor injuries. Offense is really clicking, but also they’re walking a lot! Not something the Braves have been good at recently so that’s great to see. Only thing scarier than a lineup that could take you deep 1-9 is a lineup that can take you deep 1-9 but also has a good eye. Snitker is a hell of a manager. And I’m so thankful to not have Fredi Gonzalez at the helm anymore. That was the worse time to be a Braves fan. He may be the worst manager to ever put on a uniform. Ted Lasso knows more about soccer than Gonzalez knew about baseball.

Uploading photos that are too big
I use a free app called Compress to resize photos before I upload them here. Takes about 15 seconds and very simple. You can alter the dimensions, resolutions, or both to get it to the size you need.

Spinnerbait equivalent of a Jackhammer
I don’t hear much about them so they may not be “the one” spinnerbait for many people but what I use and can not find a complaint with is the Strike King Tour Grade spinnerbaits. Great selection of colors and weights, durable skirt and wire, stand up to Esox well (which is the most important thing for me). Upgraded to these from Booyahs which were ok but usually only lasted one big pike or several small pickerel which could be all of 5 minutes.

Highly pressured lakes
I go sort of against the grain on highly pressured lakes. Seems like everybody throws finesse stuff on highly pressured lakes, so I usually go searching with a big spinnerbait when the bite gets tough. One small lake I fish in the summer will get absolutely hammered on a nice day. The fishing is an absolute grind but the average size of the bass there is nothing short of impressive. But even with finesse stuff it can throw you a goose egg and not bat an eye. Spamming a moving bait to as many spots as I can like a lipless or big spinnerbait has allowed me a lot of success. And like A-Jay said, night fishing can really be the ticket for small pressured lakes.

How do you fish in the spring?
Spring time I head to the shallows especially on warm, humid days. Hard cover like timber warms up fast and attracts bass especially during a warming trend. Fish slow if the water is still below 50°. This is from a northerner’s prospective. My water has just thawed within the few days.

How accurate are you estimating a fishes weight ?
When I got a scale 10 years ago, my fish all started to weigh less. Now that I have an idea of what fish weights actually look like, my guesses are on the conservative side and usually come out a few ounces under once the fish gets on the scale. Last year I had my most egregious under estimate. I caught one and said “this one might go 4”. Ended up 4-13 on the scale. Almost a pound under estimated. Not sure what was going on with me there lol

Standard Palomar With Braid?
A palomar knot is the only knot I use for braid to lure. I’ve never had one slip or heard of anyone having one slip.

Pay lakes for bass
There is one privately owned, pay-to-fish lake around me. It’s a decent sized lake, and is managed specifically for fishing. I fisher it once years and caught a decent sized brown trout but that was it. Not enough of a sample size to judge the lake but some of the “managing” techniques are puzzling to me. This is the only lake I’ve ever heard of that stocks bass yearly. By the thousands. I’ve never heard of bass needing to be stocked after the initial introduction, and that coupled with the allowed harvests of 15” and over, instead of a slot doesn’t seem like a recipe for trophy bass. But what do I know ??♂️ I believe they call them clubs

one of my most useful EDC tools. chopsticks.
Yep. Uncomfortable as all hell in a pocket. That’s why I carry a backpack every where I go. Just for that pesky little rescuer inhaler.

Driving down to Citi field at the end of this month to see the Braves play the Mets. My girlfriend got me tickets for my birthday. Haven’t been to a big league game in several years. Gonna show up head to toe in Atlanta gear ?

The Beer Is Brewing, The Trash Is Flying, and The Race For The Pennant Is On!
I love the WBC. Really cool seeing Ohtani strike out Trout to win it for Japan. And any team that has Trea Turner on the roster is a lucky team! Too bad he’s still wearing the wrong NL East jersey.

Best topwater line - not braid
Buzzbaits get 15lb Big Game, trebled topwaters get 10lb XL.

The Beer Is Brewing, The Trash Is Flying, and The Race For The Pennant Is On!
Doesn't feel right without Dansby in the infield. Man was I wrong about him back in the day. The Braves traded Shelby Miller after a career year to Arizona for Dansby, the exciting #1 overall pick. I was sure this would come back to bite the Braves, but instead Miller's career immediately fizzled in Arizona while Dansby makes the final out for the Braves in the World Series in '21. I'm a bad armchair GM haha. Hopefully Fried returns soon, and Soroka gets back as well.

Beginner Help
I would get 8lb Berkley Trilene XL to spool the reel with. Great, user friendly line for a variety of techniques. I would also get some 1/0 Gamakatsu Finesse Wide Gape hooks, and some 4/0 Gamakatsu offset EWG worm hooks. Some 1/4oz tungsten bullet weights I’d recommend as well. For baits, I would get some 4” and 5” Yum Dingers or Yamamoto Senkos in some kind of watermelon or green pumpkin color. You can wacky rig these with the finesse wide gap hooks, or Texas rig them with the offset EWG. I would also get a some 7.5” Culprit ribbon-tail worms that can be Texas rigged with the bullet weigh and EWG hook. You’ll be able to fish that cleanly through weeds. With bullet weights, finesse hooks and EWG hooks, that will give you good rigging options.

How do I determine the correct tube jig head (weight and hook size)?
I can't speak from experience because I always throw tubes on 6lb hybrid line, but 15lb braid has a very thin diameter and braid generally seems to be neutrally buoyant so I wouldn't think it would affect the fall too much. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will better answer your question.

How do I determine the correct tube jig head (weight and hook size)?
If the hook leaves a decent gap between the point and the tube, its big enough. If you don't have enough of a gap it can interfere with hooksets. A 3/0 should be fine for most tubes, and should be perfect for a 4.5". The correct weight is determined by how deep you're fishing and how fast you want your fall rate. Generally with tubes you want to be able to maintain bottom contact. "Dragging" a tube is a popular technique and requires constant bottom contact. I like to use the lightest weight I can still maintain bottom contact with because a light tube with a tube jig head will spiral as it sinks, and may help draw bites that way. And if you're new to fishing tubes be prepared to get snagged. Kind of like a Ned rig, it just comes with the territory.
