  1. I love the classics. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence is one of the best. Also, if you're into real old classics; The Ox Bow Incident is another one to check out. I know these have real sparse settings and no special effects, however, the stories and acting are fantastic and these are unforgettable movies. Also, just remembered Little Big Man which is comparatively newer than the other 2 mentioned, was a good one as well that had some parts that were quite funny.
  2. I love the HD trout as well - it's a killer brown trout lure in Upstate NY. I also use this size for bass, although I may add a slightly larger hook for bass next year. Use it primarily at the end of the day when bass are moving in shallow and feeding near the top. Have good success on the glimmer trout color (also my favorite trout color) and blue/silver.
  3. You can and will catch fish on plastics and jigs. Definitely have these as part of what you do. That's what I use mostly, T-rigged plastic worms and craws, and ned rigs. It's easier for me to use spinning gear vs. casting gear, as I'm sitting as close to level with the water line as you can get. Also, have expectations of big fish, as getting towed around is a lot of fun. Set your drag right and you should never get broken off. You may get bit off by a pickerel or pike, but you should not get broken off. Here's a picture that was taken last year. There were two guys fishing in a boat, not catching anything and they watched me from a distance catch several LMB and SMB. After I caught this SMB, I went over toward them as I was curious to see what it weighed. The battery in their scale was dead, but they measured it for me and it was just over 21". They said they would take a picture for me if I would tell them what I was doing to be successful. So told them, and here's the picture. Right after that, they started catching fish using a small jig and they were thrilled. So definitely consider using jigs and plastics.
  4. I wouldn't give up on this technique. I had great success with it this year. I know fishing 2 rods at once isn't allowed in tournament fishing; but I since I never tournament fish, here is what I do that seems to keep me occupied as I use the ned rig (that is, if I'm not getting much action right away with the ned rig). I toss out the ned rig along the edge of the weedline in deeper water and then fish another bait, e.g., t rigged senko or jig in shallow water, on a separate rod at the same time as the ned rig is settling. After I reel in the non ned rig bait, I will start to reel up the ned rig and will sometimes have a fish on. Best of luck in the new year.
  5. That's really bad news. I get the shot every year; wife refuses to get it. I always joke that I will be able to take care of her when she gets it; however, I hope this never happens as I know it will be no joke if it does. To anyone that does not get a shot; make sure to wash your hands often, especially after touching things in public such as doorknobs, handrails, shopping carts, etc. Additionally, never touch your hands to your mouth or eyes. This has been a tough winter, spring can't get here fast enough. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
  6. If you're not familiar that's a garbage plate. A dish that many in Rochester really love, although I'm not a big fan myself, having never been much of a connoisseur of fine food such as this.
  7. Dynamic lures HD trout is another good option.
  8. I am exclusively spinning. Although I purchased a casting set up a few years ago to try; the way I fish out of my kayak sitting flush with the water, it was not ideal for me anyway. So I'm happy with spinning gear on the water and every once in a while I will play with the casting outfit in the backyard just for fun.
  9. I think I may have to do this with my Ocean Kayak Trident. The stock seat really doesn't bother my comfort-wise but I do get tired of getting a wet butt all the time. Be very careful if you decide to do this. My first kayak was a Tarpon 100. Definitely not the most comfortable seat, however, by adding a boat cushion, you raise the center of gravity which will make you more prone to dumping if everything goes sideways on you at the same time- trust me, I know from experience. When bad things happen they happen fast. If you decide to raise your seat in an unstable set up, make sure you have a PFD on, which should be a given anyway.
  10. Never crossed my mind. There is a time and place for everything, but everything doesn't need to happen in the same time and place. When I'm fishing, I'm fishing and really enjoying fishing. When I'm hunting, I'm focused on that. I used to hunt turkeys every May in Delaware County. Regulations for spring turkey hunting only allowed hunting until noon. We focused on turkeys in the morning. In the afternoon we would fish for trout in the Delaware. Never mixed the 2 things; stayed focused on what we were doing each half of the day and the entire day was fun.
  11. Many bears in the Catskills where I hunt deer. Had a few opportunities to shoot one with my bow over the years, however, What am I going to do with a bear? Had one right under my treestand a few years ago, once it scented me it blasted out of there, shook the ground like a Buffalo; unbelievable how fast these things can move. Here's one of many pictures that I get every year by my treestand in the Catskills, with my game camera. Fortunately, for the most part these are nocturnal during hunting season. There have been sightings in the Hemlock/Canadice area.. The guy that used to watch the Monroe County Water supply finger lakes (seemed like he was there 24/7 - his name was John) told me a few years ago that he saw a bear swim across Canadice.
  12. Could be a number of things. Hose, clamp, thermostat, water pump, radiator. Have the system tested under pressure. Radiators are mostly made of plastic these days - over the last 20 years or so of driving I have replaced the radiator twice on my vehicles. Your radiator could have gotten dinged and experienced a hairline crack. As far as Ford bashing goes; I have driven Ford Ranger trucks exclusively since 1993. One of those had 250K miles on it before I sold it to my neighbor who put over 60K more miles on it. I will be getting another new Ranger in a few years as they are bringing them back in 2018. I have no complaints with Ford, and can say nothing but good about my experience with this brand. I will not bash any other brand, as I have no experience there and don't wish to make any comments based on ignorance or in an attempt to be a wise guy. Best of luck in solving your problem.
  13. I usually go to the south end, not so much because the fishing is any better, but because there is less boat traffic there. If you take a look at the topo maps on the DEC site, these lakes are an oblong symmetrical bowl, so the depths are fairly uniform as you move from shore on each side. As far as the weedless senko; when I throw one, I go toward the shore where the weeds are less thick or there are voids. If I don't get hit on the drop or in the first 15 feet of slowly reeling back in, I will then just retrieve it back all the way fast - not really fishing it as much as just getting it back so I can throw it back out. I'm just offering advice from my experience, which is limited. You may get additional, better advice from others here with way more experience and expertise than I have. Good luck
  14. Eric Thanks At this point I have a lightweight hybrid type canoe (see picture in the ADK vacation report I did in the NE local fishing section of this forum). I will probably need to put a transducer off the side with my set up or since the Kevlar is relatively thin, it may read through the bottom . I have been looking to purchase a more comfortable rig such as a Nucanoe, Feel Free Lure, etc.; as I would like to stand up or at least be more comfortable when sitting than I am now. I just need to get going and sell my 14' aluminum StarCraft boat and trailer along with the 2HP and 17HP 2 stroke motors. This will probably happen next spring. Hopefully I can get approx. $1K for this and then I will go forward and buy a luxury SOT kayak. I just want to get rid of stuff before I get more stuff - especially big stuff.
  15. Just got back from the Adirondacks (full report posted on Local Fishing - Northeast forum section). Caught a bluegill on a Booyah Pad Crasher Jr. with a Lake Fork Trailer hook. Initially, I thought I had a small LMB on, however, it turned out to be a BG. I use a spinning set up with 30# test braid, so the trailer hook helps. Here's a picture - note that the hook is turned inside out as the fish was twisting around underwater as I got my little digital camera out. Note that I would not recommend this technique for bluegill.
  16. · Got back yesterday from our annual end of September, Blue Mountain Lake vacation trip. I fished 5 of the seven days I was there, each day in the afternoon between 1 pm and 5 pm in various area lakes. Spent the morning hiking and doing things with my wife and then in the afternoon after fishing and having dinner went to the swamp that is called Lake Durant for top water. I took 4 set ups - all spinning. As much as I like my new Mojo bass rod and some of my longer lighter set ups, I took more durable, shorter rigs as follows: 2 Pflueger President 6' combos; one with 6# PLine and one with 15# braid and 8# floro leader. Note that PLine is tough, tough line. 1 6'9" medium Veritas with Mitchell 300 pro reel with 30# braid used for the Booyah Pad Crasher Jr. with a Lake Fork Trailer hook 1 Okuma SST 6'6" 2 pc. ultralight with a Pflueger Supreme reel with 10# braid and 6# floro - rigged with a 1/16oz. VMC mooneye jig and 1.5" Crappie Magnet It was a great week. Caught at least 2 - 3 dozen fish each day I located some areas where there were rocks/boulders next to the shore and in the water and fallen down trees along with sparse weeds where I was catching SMB on almost every cast. On the 6# PLine, I was using a 1/15 oz. Z man Shroom jig head along with a 2.75" TRD (what do you call this? LOL) this was working so well that I switched colors several times just for kicks - note that pink and coppertruse did not work so good there. I hooked into dozens of SMB each day doing this. Also, the biggest LMB were caught this way. I also used T rigged weightless senkos and Owner ultra shakey head jigs with GY mini craws in the weedy areas, however, I had so much luck with the TRDs that I stuck to using that 90% of the time. I also took all sorts of other lures - spoons, crankbaits, chatterbaits, spinners, etc. which I never used. Occasionally I would play with my ultra light on the outside of fall downs near the weeds and catch perch and sunfish on almost every cast. The topwater bite wasn't too good until near the last day. I caught only one at the end of each day (including a bluegill - which I will post on the other species thread). On the Saturday before we left, the last hour was magical, I hooked up with 6 LMB on the frog. Most of the SMB that I caught were on the smaller side maybe 1# or less, although several were close to 2#. I caught some really great LMB, four which were over 3# and two of those were in the 4+# range. I have never weighed anything besides a salmon, so these are just guesses; but the big LMB were very impressive especially coming in the ADKs. I have attached some pictures from a really great trip. One is from the top of Castle Rock looking over Blue Mountain Lake toward lake Durant, one was taken by my wife with her Ipad of me on Lake Durant and the rest were taken by me which may not be the greatest since I had my little camera in hand at the same time I was holding a fish or reeling one in. Hope you enjoy these.
  17. John Thanks so much for the offer - you are approx. 3 miles from me. I will need to stop by to see your set up. I just updated my profile with my email as I am not on Facebook. If you can email me with your location and a convenient time for you that would be great. Rich
  18. Yes - I fish the 2 smallest Finger Lakes frequently. Learned how to bass fish here by applying what I learned on this site and trying different things. I don't use any electronics and am still working away at learning. These little lakes are a grind at times, but to me they are challenging and fun.
  19. ^^^^^Yes & Yes - Elaztech plastic holds up significantly better (one plastic may last over 60 fish or more versus approximately an average of 4 fish for a senko for me) . The only way I lose one is if it gets bit off. If other plastic bait companies used this formulation their sales would drop substantially (just imagine needing only one bag of senkos for the entire season). Maybe their plastics work better for other applications, however, for the finesse technique, I'm sold on the Zman plastic. The fact that it is better for the environment and a better value because it is so durable and lasts so long is an added bonus.
  20. I use my first generation Veritas for this, 6'9" medium. Gets the job done for me. Also, I use a Lake Fork trailer hook which greatly increases my hook up ratio when I use a frog. The newer generation Veritas may work even better. Good luck with your search
  21. Went out yesterday, from 2 until 6:30 with a break of about an hour to eat and talk to some people out on the water. Caught 6 LMB and ended up with a pickerel right before leaving. 2 of the bass were in the 2-3# range, the rest were smaller. The pickerel put up a good fight right from the start, unlike a typical pickerel, so that was fun. Caught all except one on a ned rig, along the outside edges of the weeds. One was caught with a 1/16oz. moon eye jig with crappie magnet plastic when I was playing at the beginning with my ultralight set up. Most of the time, I would cast the ned rig to deeper water and while that was settling, I would cast an unweighted senko into the shallows. I had no luck with the senko, but it was worth a try. There was no wind, so it was a perfect day to be on the water. I have attached some pictures.
  22. I'm going on 40 fish with the same Zman shroom head that I have used the last 4 trips out. This one has caught SMB, LMB, a lake trout and 3 pickerel. So far, besides the one that I'm still using, I have went through 3 other heads this year. One was bit off after catching several bass, probably by a pickerel. One I gave to my neighbor with an 2.75" elaztec bait; because we went out in his canoe and he was clueless and had never caught a bass before, so I gave him one of these and all of a sudden he was miraculously able to start catching bass. The other one I broke trying to unhook a bass that was deeply hooked. I was able to unhook it by snapping the hook near the bend using 2 needle nose pliers; which was a good thing, since I was able to get the hook out and let the fish swim away. These hooks are very hard and if they are torqued severely to the side, they will break. Can't speak to your chatterbait hooks, however, I am happy with the shroom heads so far. I will also add that the elaztec plastic is tough as nails, as I have caught approximately 40 on one piece of plastic and although it is beat up, it is still usable and I think that the only way this thing will end is to be bit off by another pickerel. Additional edit - Please note that I am using 6# or 8# test line on spinning gear. The fish pretty much hook themselves, so there is no hard hookset involved.
  23. You may consider also the Yum Pulse. These are very reasonably priced, durable and I know they work on toothy critters, as the pickerel in the lake I fish seem to like them.
  24. I have tried this and it works well. The price is reasonable too. $25 for 500 yards from Walmart online shipped direct to local store for free. Originally recommended to me on this site by SirSnookalot a very practical guy that was interested in results from a product more than the hype.
  25. Tonez Welcome. I'm from the Rochester area as well. What I have found works well around here for me are the following colors in the Yamamoto color chart : Watermelon red magic, baby bass, goby, green pumpkin black fleck. Occasionally I try purple, black or pumpkin black/ green flake. I have better luck with 4" worms in the fingerlakes. A great combination for me is the Gary Yamamoto 3.75" baby craw in the pumpkin/ black green flake color rigged weedless on a 1/16 oz. owner ultra shakeyhead head. Please note that these work well for me and I just fish around this area. Others may have other, better suggestions. Good luck.
