  1. Never really liked Beretta but 40sw is a great round. I have an HK in that caliber. J
  2. Let me tell you...it is worth it. Your reaction time, especially when flipping and throwing buzzbaits will amaze you once you switch. Go for it! J
  3. St. Croix Legend Tournament Medium, Xtra Fast, 6'8". Revo S in LH (that LH is essential for walking the dog). 10lb clear mono suffix elite. That being said, I haven't fished with that one very long. As others pointed out, you want a faster action to impart more movement. It is hard to get the poppers to pop when the rod is taking up all the movement. All other things are options and will depend on the angler's tastes. J
  4. I don't want to pick one, but I can't see the results unless I do. I think this pole has valuable information in it and I would like to be able to see the results without skewing the results with my 1 frog opinion. This frustrates me and I have said this on a few poles. So can someone please tell me the results so I don't have to bogart it? I fixed it. J
  5. LOL You are right technically. I mean what is the chance that a bass would eat a toad? Toads stay in the woods and frogs swim. What is up with that? ;D I realize that the difference in name is to distinguish the different types. I absolutely agree with everyone that the hookups depend very much on the angler, the other gear and the circumstances. However, all other things being equal, all of the frogs are not. I have in my possession a Swamp Donkey, two Bronzeyes, a Deps Basirisky and three Sumo frogs. All are different in more than one aspect. The Deps is very soft. The Bronzeeye is harder with a small hook gap. The Sumo is even harder but has a seemingly larger hook gap. The Swamp Donkey is unusual as all get out. Very soft body, huge hooks, weird finish. Saying that all are equal is a copout (pardon me for pointing that out). I doubt very much that anyone here has tried all of them and found all of them to be equal. Next thing we know, Lucky Crafts will be the same as Bandits. : J
  6. Not to mince words, but the Spro is there (Bronzeeye). Also, Horny Toad and Ribbit are toads, not frogs and are fished entirely different. I don't know about everyone else but I have never missed a hookup on a horny toad. The real problem are that the soft bodied frogs such as the Bronzeeye don't collapse enough to stick a bass with the hook. I had a Bronzeeye 65 and I swear that thing is incapable of catching a bass (I know people have luck, but not me). J
  7. Amen! Then buy the Revo. ;D Each reel has a benefit. I would say don't just spend as much money as you can. Look at what your are getting. J
  8. Bigger is usually better but keep in mind that a worm with a 5/0 hook hits the bottom a lot quicker than one with a 4/0 hook in it. I learned this the hard way carolina rigging these worms with my dad in the boat. J
  9. I don't know if they've changed anything but BFL did not require you to offer money to your boater. It is a nice thing to do. I would not give it over until the tourney is over. There are guys that will backboat you but most are class acts. The most important thing is to meet up with your boater at the pre-meeting. The boater will tell you what they plan on fishing. This will help you decide what setups and lures you should bring at least at a minimum. You also need to know how much room the boater has so you know what of yours will fit. Communicate well and it will be a fun time for all! J
  10. Not a problem. I have three Revos. Two are S's. I had the hardest time figuring out how to get to the brakes so glad I could pass on some knowledge. J
  11. You would probably be better off pouring your own or having someone pour them. My dad pours all the football heads I need, with or without guards. I can paint, add skirts, use them bare, etc. It sure give you options. J
  12. Well Bigbill is maybe the only one of you more OCD than me. I make sure I don't catch one on the first cast or last cast. Wear the same lucky hat, same lucky shoes. I have a rod that I bring with me whether I know I am going to use it or not. Then there are the personal OCD fits that I have which take me about 10 extra minutes just to get out of the house and make sure the boat is hooked up right, etc. I have never heard the banana thing. What's the origin? J
  13. Hey, I sent you a PM. I'm wondering if you messed with the brakes on your Revo. Mine all came with two of the brakes on already (out of the package). So you may have brakes on and not even know it. One thing I have noticed about the Revos is that they take some dialing in and will cast a mile but they are fairly unforgiving (to me at least) and will backlash if I make a mistake. Most all reels will allow you to set the brake high enough to not backlash even without using your thumb. The secret is to dial that back to where your distance and anti backlash properties serve you best. J
  14. Just to be clear. If you have only fished one frog, you have no comparison so don't feel you have to pick one if that is all you have fished. I have fished the Bronzeeye and the Sumo and the Sumo seemed to work better as far as hookups. I know this question has came up before but the Swamp Donkey was not established well at that time and the smaller Bronzeeye just came out as well. Thanks J
  15. But did you know that Scotch is aged in used Bourbon barrels? Irish Whiskey may also, not sure. J So Scotch came first, from the old country, yet somehow it requires bourbon barrels to make? Chicken and the egg huh? Yeah, I always wondered about that. I don't know the specific timeline per se. Maybe before Bourbon, they put the Scotch in Irish Whiskey Barrels?? Who knows. J From Cigaraficionado.com Bourbon barrels were unknown on Islay or anywhere in Scotland until the 1930s. That's when Prohibition ended in the United States and Kentuckians were again creating a steady supply of used barrels (by law they can use them only once) to sell to the Scots. Before that, Scotch was aged in whatever barrels were at hand, some of which presumably were Port, Claret and Sherry casks.

  17. I don't believe it is law, I know it was proposed at one time. It is more of a respect thing. To my knowledge though there is no whiskey called Bourbon distilled outside Kentucky. It should also be noted that no Bourbon is currently made in Bourbon county and said county is in fact a dry county. J

  19. You have a very good point. However, as Micro mentioned Abu is an old hand. The first hard decision I had to make was whether to buy an Abu or a Daiwa. I think I was 14 at the time. I went with the Daiwa, my brother got the Abu. Guess what, both are still working 15 years and hundreds of fish later. There is going to come a point when the durability critics are going to have to cede and say "ok, maybe it does last". Until that time comes, I am going to abuse my Abus and if they break then I guess I will go back to Daiwa. I am sure the Shimanos are fine reels. I never had one so for me to make a judgement beyond the specs is ridiculous. I just can't pay the money for the name. J
  20. How many people knew or paid attention to maximum drag tension before Abu started throwing those numbers up? It wasn't an issue. WOW, how did anyone ever catch fish before Garcia's super-duper flash bang drag? : It is quite laughable. Then again, perfect for the crowd that thinks more of anything (e.g. bearings) equals better. :-X Is money the more of anything you speak of? Or more metal? Bottom line is that the Abu offers more for less money. I wanted a reel for a new frog rod and sure the rod would probably take up most of the flex from a hookset or dragging a bass +10 pounds of weeds but why would I chance it? J
  21. Big whiskey drinker here. I've had everything from Bourbon to Irish to Scotch to Japanese. What i've tried... Eagle Rare--Not anything special. Woodford Reserve--Very nice, I'm cherishing my bottle. Pappy Van Winkle--The best that money can buy. Made just down the road near Frankfort. This one does need a splash of spring water. Otherwise the strength drowns the taste. Here in KY, Jim Beam is a mixing bourbon, only for bourbon balls and Whiskey and Cokes. We don't take it too serious. I also have a nice bottle of 12 yr Laphroaig Single Islay Malt Scotch. It is so nasty it is good. I like Johnny Walker, it is very smooth but I don't own a bottle currently. I've got two bottles of Suntory Japanese that I am saving for a special occasion. I had a lot in Japan but these bottles were hand delivered afterward. J
  22. I don't mean to keep this going as a Shimano bashing thread but here's the deal. You can get a Abu for $19 less than a Curado (that with the rebates). The Abu weighs less and more importantly, the Abu has a drag maximum of over 20lbs. The Curado (100/200) is less than 10lbs. I mean how can you flip or use this reel for a frog rod. To me, this reel has no application other than the brand name. I seriously entertained buying one of these. Drawn in by the hype I guess. Just didn't make sense. J
  23. Hendrix isn't a band!! ;D Just kidding. All Along the Watchtower is my favorite song ever. I like both versions but like I've always heard, Dylan redone is better than original Dylan. Writes great songs but only sings them well. J
  24. No problem. I like that new song too. Someone mentioned A7X. That is also a great band that I forgot. J
  25. Current--Airborne, Paramore, Papa Roach, TOAD, Seether, 12 Stone, Atreyu, Disturbed, Saliva, Daughtry Classic--Skynyrd, ACDC
