Learning to skip a baitcaster.
So I watched a bunch of videos about this and started practicing in my driveway. Most pros seem to use 6--10 to 7-3 mh to h rods with fast action tips. At first I tried it on a 6-8 m extra fast with a Lews MP . put brakes on all the way and started skipping a senko across my driveway. Had a few backlashes but not to bad. Next I pulled out my Dobyns Sierra 7-3 heavy fast with my Lews custom lite on it. Brakes all the way up got no backlash but need more distance. Slowly loosened spool tension until bait dropped. Cast again using thumb and no backlash. Now I backed off adjustable centrifugal brake for a fewcasts and got no backlash with good distance. This custom lite on the Dobyns works. really well. I can't wait to get on the water and give it a shot. Line was Sufix 832 50 lb.what I found was really important was to cast really low like the pros say to. Hopefully I will duplicate my success on the water. It's going to be really nice to get baits way under hanging brush. Dean Rojas can actually skip curves around objects. THAT'S SICK !!!!

Braid+leader vs floro
Pike and musky can bite through any line. I've just never had it happen. That's why they make steel leaders. Don't pick them out. Reel against your thumb pressure then pull line off spool by hand. Sometimes pulling it pulls out the knots. Feel your pull. You have to pull pretty hard sometimes. If it doesn't come then pick out a pile of loops with your fingers. I've rarely cut it off and have gotten out backlashes that bad and worse.

Braid+leader vs floro
never been bit off by a toothy critter in the 30 years ive used braid.

Braid+leader vs floro
Stop using garbage rods with garbage guides. Braid is easier to remove a backlash from not harder. It also doesn't get damaged and backlashes less. As far as digging use at least 50 lb test on a baitcaster.ive tried straight flouro next to braid numerous times when the bite was tough and it makes no difference in the 10 years I've tried it. For me it's lime green with the last 10 feet colored black. Slack line sensitivity is one place flouro is better but to say braid has none is misinformation. Unless you have a ton of slack in your line you will feel the strike. I fish senko on fairly slack line and feel the bit all the time. Definately more so than with mono.

Couldn’t tell difference between my cheaper and more expensive rod….
Better rods may be nicer. But considering the classic has been won with BPS Carbonlite rods and reels I would say the skill of the angler has the most to do with success.

Lower Profile Reels
Lews custom lite slp at 4.9 oz. Throws finesse and heavier lures no problem. Very hard to backlash with great casting distance.

I've fished with my friends glx andwith my hands it's not that much better. I can feel everything I need with a Sierra. I do plan on upgrading to a champion.with my Sierra and braid and a 1/2 oz. Football jig I can fee every pebble I drag it over using braid. I can tell immediately if a bass it playing with it. And to really throw gas on the fire my Johnny Morris Signature series are just as good.

Not. My Sierra microguide is plenty sensitive and I'm 62 with nerve damage in my hands. What line are you using ? Mono ? Flouro ? Braid ? If you are using any mono other than Sufix Advance its like fishing with a rubber band. Flouro and braid are much more sensitive.

Which Lew's Reel Should I Buy?
Go to sportsmansoutfitters.com and get the custom lite slp at 229$ with the tanso tech frame. At 4.9 of you'll be blown away. I have one and it's a great reel.
-
Jig Rod Approx. 250$ budget
Go Dobyns. They are known to be really well balanced and sensitive.
-
Crap Braid
So why the title ? That doesn't make it crap.
-
Do you keep a finger on your line?
IMHO it's as useless as TOB !!!! Get a sensitive rod and some sensitive line and your rod and reel will send the information to your hands.

Some guidance if you will.
Dobyns Sierra

Confused by specific purpose rods
Agree with Glenn. So if you throw. Treble hooked lures more than single hooks go with the moderate rod. If you throw jigs and plastics more go with the second rod. I would also use second rod for spinnerbaits and chatterbaits.

What's your budget ? Lews reels are awesome. Dobyns rods are awesome. Can you spend 300 $ ?The LFS 8.3 Is a great reel for the money. The MP is even better. If you buy a Lews reel get it at Sportsmans outfitters.com. they have the best Lews prices.the left hand LFS 8.3 Is 85$

My hook-sets suck.
I've had that happen with worms where the hook never gets in the mouth.
