  1. Skip the $30 rod and get a $100 rod for $50 instead. Fisherman factory outlet is a website that has great deals on rods check out the last two or three pages of this thread for current deals
  2. I got one too and have had it for about 4 or 5 months. I like that it takes aaa batteries instead of those flat 1.5 volt batteries like some other scales
  3. Sounds like trying to register for college classes the night it opens. im looking for a good deal on a punching rod. If I don't see anything amazing I'll get one in the flea market when everyone unloads their extra rods and tackle during the winter
  4. I use my ml drop shot rod for 1/16 to 3/16 jig heads and a medium spinning rod for 1/4 ounce or heavier
  5. When using a square bill crank bait make sure you are running it into rocks, stumps and branches. They look like they will get hung up will all of the treble hooks but they don't. Almost all of my strikes in a square bill come right after I bump into structure. Mid you feel your bait getting hung up just pause for a second and most of the time the bait will back out and float over whatever it was stuck on with th hollow bodied frogs set the hook hard. When I first tried fishing a frog I missed a bunch of hooks ups because I wasn't setting the hook hard enough. My second day I only missed one because I locked my drag down and really set the hook
  6. I use hook sizes between #2 and 1/0 for drop shot. I'm not sure about the leaking jars but you could put a few in the peanut butter jar overnight so see if anything bad happens though I really doubt anything will happen.
  7. Smash the clip closed with some pliers and then slip the line in. You can also put a simple overhand knot in your line so the weight won't slip past it. I use vos weights and don't have any problems with them falling off if I smash them shut l. if your line gets cut don't pull it as tight through the line clip

I fish the zinkers just like senkos, weightless wacky/ Texas along with weighted wacky or Texas when they loose their salt and start to float. You can catch a three to five fish before they start floating. When they float I'll put a nail on them to make them sink, tear them in half and Ned rig them or use them on a shakey head. I like normal senkos more because they sink faster but if I want some worms for the Ned rig, I'll get a pack of zinkers and fish them till the salt runs out
  9. A 1:9 twist is average for a .223. 1:9 is one revolution in nine inches. A 75gr bullet is near the upper end of what that twist can stabilize. A faster twist will do a better job of stabilizing heavier bullets. .33 MOA is about as good as it gets. if you want to shrink your groups even more, you are getting into the sorting your brass by weight territory. You could also mess around with your rifle by pillar or glass bedding the stock if it isn't already or free floating the barrel.
  10. I shoot local pistol competitions as one of my hobbies and started reloading about a year and a half ago. Lee's modern reloading book is a good read for someone just starting out. It has about 90 pages of general reloading information followed by reloading data for any caliber you will shoot. If you aren't going to get any reloading books you can get load data from every powder manufactures website. I started out on a progressive press and was a little worried at first because I read a bunch of stuff online about how I can blow my self up, but after trying it I figured out that it's pretty easy. You aren't going to blow your self up by being off by a few tenths of a grain or even a grain or two off. You will blow your gun up by throwing a double charge or no powder at all. One guy I shoot with doesn't even weigh out his charge. He just looks at how much powder is in the case and calls it good (I don't recommend this method). My biggest tip is to look inside every case before seating a bullet and if the powder amount doesn't look right, set it aside and weigh it later. If you have a round you just loaded that you aren't sure about you can use a bullet puller to save the components or just toss it. Don't try to multi task while reloading, this is where people make mistakes. Every match I shoot, at least one person has a squib and I have even seen a guy blow up his gun. When I talk to these people after the match they almost all mess up when first setting up their press. They say that they were trying out some new loads and probably let one slip by without powder. When setting up a progressive press most people will run a few rounds without powder to get the bullet sizing and seating correct then they will open up the powder dispenser. The guys who end up with a squib probably weren't paying attention and let one of the test rounds end up in their completed bullet pile. Reloading may seem complicated at first but once you load a few rounds you will realize that it isn't that difficult. Visually inspect every powder charge and every round. If something doesn't feel or look right just pull the bullet and start over.
  11. welcome to the forums, nice to see someone else from the valley
  12. Morning dawn and Aaron's magic. I don't have a third favorite
  13. If you don't mind the extra weight the leartherman wave is a great multi tool. I've had mine for 12 years and use something on it almost every day. It's also great for fishing as the scissors cut braid, the pliers are good at removing hooks and the file can be used to sharpen hooks
  14. I went to the local tackle shop today and the guys working there said they don't know of anyone who guides at bass lake. I guess even the trout fishing guides switched to shaver lake. If you really want to fish bass lake shoot me a pm. I have two kayaks and could probably take you out with me on a saturday or sunday morning.
  15. I'm not sure of an guides for bass lake, but will ask about it the next time I go to the local tackle shop. Bass lake is about 20 minutes from where I live and has been the lake I fished the most this summer. I catch about 5:1 spots to largemouth with most fish under a pound and a half. It's a good numbers lake, but lacks size. I catch the majority of my fish on the drop shot with a few on deep cranks. Just about any color robo worm will work, but my favorite drop shot bay is the missile bait drop craw in pinkalicious. Boat traffic died down after labor day. Last satudray there were only about three boats on the lake. The lake is sitting around 90% capacity fisherman's warehouse closed down a few weeks ago, Valley Rod and Gun is the place to call now.
  16. I like hyabusa #2 drop shot hooks. The are the lightest wire hooks I have found and they keep a sharp point all day. I have been using them all summer and almost never lose fish. If the fish stays on for longer than a second it will make it to the boat. Sometimes I try to shake fish off in the water so I can get back to fishing faster, but almost never have success doing that because the hook penetrates so well. They are sold in packs of 9 making them some of the cheapest price per hook out there https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Hayabusa_DSR132_Drop_Shot_Hooks_/descpage-HDRH.html?from=basres I just wish they came in 1 or 1/0 If you want to try a few before you buy them, pm me your address and I can mail you a couple. I use braid mainline with a coppoly leader and never notice line twist. If you use straight mono you might see some line twist, but you can normally get it out by making a long cast and then pinching the line tight between your fingers as you reel it back in, letting the last few feet hang and spin.
  17. The fishing buddy is the same fish finder as the piranha max only with a mounting bracket and pole. I have a piranha max that I used for a few month before upgrading to a helix 5. You can see fish and structure on the display down to at least 25' but anything under a pound will only show up as a pixle or two. It took about two days of really using the fish finder to figure out what fish looked like, but once I figured that out I was able to catch fish on off shore structure. The helix 5 is a nice step up because they display has a higher pixel count making it easier to see fish. It also shows your bait a lot better while drop shoting. The piranha max will show your bait falling but when it's at the bottom it doesn't really show the bait like the helix 5 does. The piranha max hardly uses any power (200 or 250 milliamps) so you can run it for days off of a small 12v battery. I have the DI model, but hardly ever used the DI function. The 2D sonar showed enough information that I could figure out if I was fishing a brush pile or a rock and I didn't want to take the time to figure out what fish looked like in DI. If the mounting bracket is worth $100 to you get the fishing buddy otherwise you can get the non Di piranha max for $100 and spend $50 buying a bracket or make one yourself to save money. For $200 I would just get the helix 5 and make a mounting bracket. The helix was a noticeable step up from the piranha max. I'm selling my piranha max and will pm you the thread link along with a price
  18. Two iPhones a month apart. I had a perfect record with phones till I started bass fishing. I never even dropped mine on carpet
  19. If you want to keep the budget under $1000 check out the perception 12.0 pro. I picked one up on Labor Day and am really impressed with it. The seat is like a nice beach chair and if you have average balance you can stand and fish in calm water or just stand to stretch in choppy conditions. It is drilled for a Lorance transducer, but with a little bit of creativity you can make transducer brackets from other companies fit. There is a compartment to store your battery and gear tracks to mount your display. It runs about $830 which will leave you some extra cash for a carbon paddle.
  20. A local tackle store is closing up shop and has lures marked down to buy two get three free. I have enough roboworms for a year or two.
  21. I would start with a two foot tag end between the weight and hook then move your weight around to see what the fish prefer. Get some dropshot weights that you don't have to tie on so you can shorten or lengthen the tag end as you please. skip to about 5 minutes to see how to make a drop shot weedless
  22. I sharpen mine. If I run it lightly over my fingernail and it doesn't scratch it, I make a few passes on the file. I use the diamond file on my leartherman
  23. Anything in that price range will show your lure. I have a humminbird helix 5 which is a $200 fish finder and I have no problem seeing my lure and weight while drop shoting 25' deep. I routinly set the hook without even feeling the fish because I can see them go for my bait on the fish finder. I also have a $100 fish finder that will pick up my bait while drop shoting
  24. The dicks sale also applies to yum money minows. They didn't originally show up as $2 each but I told the cashier and the manager fixed it. $20 will get you a nice swim bait collection.
  25. I wonder how zman stays on business selling baits that last so long
