  1. I recommend Diawa Ardito travel rods. I have two that go with me everywhere. ( back pack, car, or plane) Highly recommend the medium, and medium heavy. I have landed ten pound bass on both, as well as trout, salmon, and many saltwater species.
  2. I spent 30 years trolling spinners for King Salmon. When I first started, all I would ever see used were Indiana and Colorado blades in either silver, or gold. Now the only blade you will ever see used for Kings, is called a Mag Willow, ( also called Oklahoma, or turtle back) in mostly colored blades. I see more and more spinnerbaits offered with this blade style. It will be interesting to see if the Oklahoma blade takes over bass fishing the same way it did salmon fishing. My favorite spinnerbait for many years was a single Colorado with a black skirt. I either crawled it on the bottom, or bulged it on top. Lately, I find myself using willow blades with light colored skirts. After reading this thread, I decided to buy some Indiana blades. I see many fisherman take away the blades, altogether, and call it a swim jig. Where does the madness end?
  3. Is that lead wire wrapped on the hook shank on a couple of those? What do they weigh?
  4. Here are some spinnerbaits I made yesterday. Top row are 3/4 oz. bottom row are 1/2 oz. A friend of mine likes this color combo for Lake Chapala. I normally like darker colors, but have started becoming a chart. and white fan. I got hooked on colored blades fishing inline spinners for salmon, they also work great for bass in Mexico.
  5. Then- I would fish on weekends, or other times when I didn't have school and I had to ask my parents if I could go. Now- I have to wait until I have time away from work, and I have to get the ok from my wife. Both- Never enough time to fish.
  6. Give Yak hair a try sometime. It works great jigs, and large streamer flies.
  7. I'm sure they would in the hands of a skilled worm fisherman. Believe me I have tried the big T rigged worms. I have a dozen packs of giant worms, with lead, and tungsten bullet weights, in all sizes. One day last summer I spent all morning fishing 12 inch T rigged worms crawled through large tree branches in 25 feet of water. When the afternoon wind picked up I put a spinnerbait on and fished the same trees. I instantly landed a bass over 10 pounds. I tried fishing them in some flooded grass. Then tied on a buzz bait and landed an 8 pounder. I haven't given up.
  8. Texas rigged worm. I have caught bass on worms, weightless(Texas rigged without a sinker) wacky, Carolina, split shot, and on a jig or shaky head. I have caught bass on creature baits and craws Texas rigged, but never on a regular Texas rigged worm. I know I just admitted to the ultimate crime in bass fishing. Please don't send the bass police to come take my crankbaits, and spinnerbaits away. I promise to catch a T rigged bass before the end of the year.
  9. Bait monkey was allowed back in the house for the holidays. I new my wife couldn't keep him away for ever. A friend was able to bring the order down to PV, just in time for me to go fishing yesterday. Even with new tackle, it was a slow day fishing, but it wasn't because I was still waiting on new crankbaits.
  10. I have both, and for 40 years, would never even think of owning a Diawa. Now I'm 50 /50. My opinion is Shimano still has the best high end reels both spinning and casting, but Diawa is by far the best in the $150 and under range, both spinning and casting.
  11. When I was 25 I moved to Alaska. I didn't think I would ever need or miss my bass fishing gear I had acquired since childhood, so I sold it to a tackle store that sold used lures hung on a peg board. Years later I had the opportunity to start bass fishing again. I still had a few lures at my moms house, and of course bought lots of new gear. I started missing all my old lures, so I went on ebay and starting buying old tackle boxes, whenever I saw one that I had a lure the same size and color I had sold. Excellent way to spend time and waste money on old lures I rarely fish. I now have almost all the lures I had when I was growing up and hundreds of other lures that came with the ones I wanted. ( bait monkey calls these bonus lures, similar to free) My wife wonders how I can't remember to stop at the store on my way home, but remember every singe lure I owned 40 years ago. I haven't told her, I also remember where I bought, them, how much they cost, where and what size of bass I caught on each one. Lures are a great way to bring back memories.
  12. Anodes protect from corrosion due to electrolysis. Salt water corrosion is still a problem no matter how many Zink anodes you have. Rinse the trailer, boat, and flush the motor with fresh water after each use and an aluminum boat is fine. You see more aluminum boats used on the ocean in the Northwest where they are very popular, and more fiberglass as you go south on the West Coast.
  13. Do you have any old Winchester bait casting reels? My mom bought me an old bamboo rod with a Winchester reel. She like that I was supper happy with the rod and reel but was surprised when I told her I didn't want to fish with it. She thought it looked like it would catch fish just fine. After all she, spent $20 on it. She would have a heart attack if she found out one one of my fly rods cost. I ended up giving it to an Uncle who collects Winchester guns. I would have like to keep it, but the look on my Uncles face when he saw something Winchester he didn't own was priceless.
  14. You don't have to make a living at fishing to be the best, especially on your home water. I would choose many non pro anglers on this site over a pro, if I had the chance to fish with them on their home water. I can't see how any pro on the planet could have the small mouth dialed in on their home lake better than AJ. WRB must have a name for every bass over 15 pounds in Southern CA. and many others here may not be pros, but fish on or above a professional level. Guides not only have to be able to catch fish, but they have to be able to find a way for their clients to catch fish, as well as have a good time regardless of the clients ability, making them as professional as any tournament angler. I'm an average bass angler, but am improving, and have as much fun fishing and learning about bass fishing as any one. I don't get the time on the water I wished I could, but reading other anglers, stories, listening to their advise and chiming in on the arguments is the next best thing.
  15. I agree, this is true, but once you find where the fish are, you want to make sure you throw something they will hit. Even a stick of dynamite will not work if there are no fish where you throw it. But a dud stick of dynamite will not work even if you are in a huge school of fish. Size, presentation, shape, and color are all things to consider once fish are located. The skunk smells the same weather you find the fish, but don't get them to bite, or don't find the fish at all.
  16. When will bass spawn in a lake that never gets below 68 degrees, and never gets above 80 degrees? Coldest temperature of the year is in March. So far my best luck has been in June, because that is when the water is low and forces the bass to concentrate more. Water temp. is in the mid 70's then. Problem is bass on are the thin side at that time. I would like to fish the lake hard during pre spawn, but no one knows when that is. I'm assuming it will be in the early spring.
  17. What was wrong with the location of the furniture? Were you able to be comfortable while watching the foot ball game? What is wrong with vines? Hope you realized you missed a chance at your PB. Yard work is for people that don't fish.
  18. Most of the time I use Maxima Ultra Green 12 pound( my default line for everything). If I'm in an area where I'm loosing crankbaits from snags ( old gill nets) then I will use straight 40 pound braid, which can rip the nets apart. I keep going back and forth with floro for cranks, but am currently using mono for all but deep cranking. Deep cranking I'm currently using braid to leader. ( subject to change by the time the next deep crank line thread comes up) Sometimes I wish mono was the only line available, then all I would have to choose and argue about is brand. Life can be confusing at times.
  19. Here is my list. A lure that doesn't snag, casts like a bullet, and always catches big fish. A rod that casts can casts as far as I think I can cast. A maintenance free reel that can't backlash, but requires zero brake and casts miles with any rod. Line that works with any knot, has zero stretch unless I want it to stretch, casts well, wont tangle, can float, sink, or suspend, is invisible to bass, but I can see it with out my glasses, and of course is extremely strong.
  20. My friend always gets backlashes. I only get professional over runs.
  21. Communication before the trip is key. Ask the guide before you book the trip what his rules are. If you don't like his rules, politely tell him why. He may come up with a compromise, that both parties are happy with, or may recommend you book with some one else. Either way, good communication can save both time, and money for all involved.
  22. I have two Ardito Travel rods, one medium, one medium heavy. If my wife hadn't kicked the Bait Monkeys butt a a while back, I would own another medium heavy. Bait Monkey is getting older, and can't last more than ten rounds any more. My wife on the other hand, has no trouble going the distance. I also have Tatula one piece rods. I fish them at the same time, and don't ever notice any difference between the one piece, and the travel rods. I highly recommend the Ardito
  23. Lake Huites has major cartel problems. Hard to get access.
  24. Here is a couple pictures of my biggest bass of the Thanksgiving holiday at lake Chapala. I was lucky there was a commercial fisherman close by to take my picture when I caught this 7.2 pound fatty. So far lots of fish but few big ones. One more day to try and get one bigger.
  25. I'm going to fish all day Thursday Friday and Saturday. I will be fishing Lake Chapala Jalisco Mexico. Weather forecasted to be sunny with mid day temp. of 75 degrees. Water temp should be around 70 degrees. It will be my first chance to fish multiple days in months. My wife is Mexican, so she doesn't mind missing out on a big dinner for a US holiday as long as I don't. I tried to convince her it was a US tradition to go hunting or fishing on Thanksgiving. She didn't believe me. My father and I always went goose hunting Thanksgiving morning when I was young. I guess I should have said it was a family tradition. US tradition sounds better because she can be skeptical about my family traditions. Either way I am going bass fishing tomorrow, and think it is a great way to spend the holiday.
