tournament at Baccarac
Unfortunately FFS has come to Mexico, but it hasn't come to me. I don't have the money to buy it, or the time to learn how to use it. I'm on the fence weather it is ethical, or sporting, but I sure would like to try it and then decide. My version of the old fisherman's prayer is. Lord please let my fish with FFS on my home lake in Mexico. I promise to stop after I catch a 15 pound bass. I may never get a chance to use it, but I'm positive, any lodges or guides that don't jump on the FFS train will be left at the station. Many of the lakes here have a large population of off shore bait, and giant Pelagic bass. In a few years the first guides to take advantage of the technology will be telling unbelievable, but true stories about when FFS first came to Mexico. It will be interesting to see who will be the Josh Jones of Mexico.

tournament at Baccarac
When I first heard the numbers reported at this tournament I was to say the least skeptical, but after watching this video, I do believe it was possible. FFS has come to Mexico and it is here to stay.

Latest Tackle Purchase Thread (Bait Monkey Victim Support Group)
I went to the states for a week to visit family. My wife tied the Bait Monkey up and wouldn't untie him until my plane had taken off. Without my fury buddy along, I only bought a few items. I still can't believe I was in the land of plenty for a week and brought home so little tackle. I guess I should be proud of myself, but I am positive I will regret leaving the Monkey behind. The bladed jigs were gifted to me by a Bass Resource member RRocket. I thought he was going to send me one to try, but he sent 6 and they are very well made. I can't wait to give them a try. A big thanks to RRocket for such generosity. With super human restraint on my part, I left WA with - 6- bladed jigs. 2- DT 16 2 -packs of worm weights 2- packs of snaps 1- pack of 7 inch Senkos 1- pack of 25 4/0 hooks.

Did you catch your PB during the prespawn?
This bass is a tie for my PB. It was caught on May 7 post spawn, with zero eggs, and nothing in it's stomach. I tried to release the bass after a long fight that included a significant amount of time wrapped around a tree. The bass would swim away then go belly up. After trying many times I killed it and gave it to another angler who had a cooler in their boat. I cleaned it before I gave it to them, and it was the first time I had ever cleaned a bass that didn't have something in it's stomach. It was completely empty. The bass was 26 and 3/4 inches long and weighed 10.8 pounds. I have always wondered how much it would have weighed pre spawn. The tail was bloody so I assume it had recently spawned. Any one have guess as to pre spawn weight?

Old Gear Causing Injuries?
Remember there are ways to fish that don't require non stop casting. Trolling or live bait are two methods that are less stressful on less than youthful joints. I know many will say that's not real bass fishing, but it sure is better than sitting in a rocking chair complaining about the weather.

SPORTSMAN'S WAREHOUSE SALE TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE???
I got a text today from the Alaska DMV saying I owed money for a long past due traffic violation, and I could face charges if I didn't take care of the problem. I was supposed to respond by text, or call a phone number left in the message. I almost responded but then realized it was a scam. I had read about a text scam going around pretending to be from a persons home state DMV. Apparently if a person responds to the text some hackers can get information off your phone. I was sure it was real, and all I would need to do is call them and explain there records were not correct, that I hadn't had a traffic ticket in Alaska for over 20 years. Years ago I had a ticket in Alaska for no seat belt, that I paid. The records keeper made a mistake and didn't record the payment in the right file. I got pulled over a few months later, and was able to convince the policeman there was a mistake. He let me go and told me where the office was to take care of it. I thought for sure this was another mistake by the DMV. I'm sure glad I didn't respond to this text message. Be careful, the scammers are getting better and better at their evil ways.

"Excuse me, may I have a little privacy here?"
When I was younger I had a loud mouth, and a quick temper to go with it. Looking back I can't think of a single time, that my attitude improved my life or the life of any one else. It took me years to learn, that if I treat others with kindness and respect, they will mostly likely treat me the same, and if they don't, it is their problem not mine. That lady could have easily told you she was enjoying a quite peaceful morning with nothing but nature to look at, and if you would mind fishing somewhere else for a while while she let her coffee start to relieve the pain of her hang over it would be much appreciated. With just a little politeness, she might have got her privacy for the morning and made a new friend. Instead she made herself appear to be an grumpy idiot, and made your day a little less peaceful. A few years ago I had a client fishing and we were crushing big king salmon on a small hole on the Togiak river. I was drifting down through the hole, catching a big salmon on every drift, than motoring up and doing the drift again. The drift was only a couple hundred yards long, and it would only take a minuet to drive back up and hook another fish. A guide from another lodge, pulled up to the shore with his kid while I was setting up for another drift. When I came around the corner and saw the other angler, fishing from the shore effectively blocking me from drifting by, my blood instantly reached a boiling point. The guides son was hooked into a big king and I had to change course in order not to cut his line. While doing this my anglers line snagged and I had to quickly break off or get in a big tangle. By the time I had retied my lines, and motored back up the river, the boy had landed a real giant. My angler new me well for many years and was certain I was going to explode. I started heading for the shore they were on, but before I could say a word, my friend complimented the boy for catching such a nice king and told the dad he must be a proud father. I had always considered this particular guide an enemy, simply because he worked for a new lodge, and the river had become way more crowded than when I had first started guiding there. After my client had congratulated the two, the guide apologized for fishing from the bank in front of me. He told me he had been very busy and only had a half hour to get his visiting son a king salmon. He new I was drifting through the hole but hadn't brought a rod set up for drifting with him, so he wasn't able to put in above me and drift through like I was. He had hoped to hook and land a salmon before I came around the corner, but the fish was to big and he was sorry he got in the way. They both got in their boat and drove off with his boy holding on to one of the biggest salmon of the year. My client who is still a very good friend looked at me and said it doesn't ever hurt to be nice. He pointed out that starting a fight over a fishing whole would not just have been bad example for the child, but would have been a complete embarrassment for me. I wish I could say after that I changed my ways, but it took many more years and many more life experiences, before I learned that being a bad ass, was only being an ass. I look back at that day, and remind myself of those wise words. I never hurts to be nice. Hopefully the lady that yelled at you was just having a bad day, and regrets her attitude. You should be proud, you handled the situation with civility and respect. A shouting match across a lake on a peaceful morning in Main does nobody any good. If that lady wants to act like a child, let her, someone has to be the grown up on the lake.

What is this soft plastic and how do I use it?
The Bait Monkey has been my financial adviser, accountant, banker, and relationship canceller most of my life. He has had more influence over me than any teacher or boss ever has, but if he tries to get me to buy a piece of plastic called a poop bait, I will have to draw the line in the sand. Unless of course my fishing buddy buys some first and makes me look like an outdated fool, while he lands DD with them.

Old Gear Causing Injuries?
Gift him a Zillion with a right hand retrieve. This will not only make him want to give up on his old reels, you will have peace without the Bait Monkey at your house for awhile, it's a win win.

What did I do wrong?
In order to answer your question, I need more information. Was it the only lure catching bass? Was it the only one of it's kind with you that day? Is it the first time you spent that much money on a lure? Did the bass jump more than once showing you his new jewelry? Are you positive you have never backlashed that line? What was the moon phase? If it was the only lure like you had that was catching bass, there is your answer. If it was the first time you paid that much for a lure, buy more, it is a law of nature that you will loose the first expensive lure to a fish. Something about butterflies in Borneo, and Chaos theory, I don't understand the math, but I do believe in the law. If the bass jumped numerous times after breaking you off, the bass had evil powers, some bass are worse than black cats, broken mirrors, and aliens from outer space combined. If you back lashed the line at one time, and applied more than a pound of preasure, getting the back lash out, welcome to the fluorocarbon club. If you can't find a reason, blame it on the moon.

Carolina Rig and Palomar knots.
Thanks Tom. San Diego jam is what I have used on the ocean for years. I know plenty of good knots I can use, I was just curious if it was possible to tie the leader with a Palomar after tying to the main line. Watching two pros do it, I thought maybe I was missing something, but unless a person brings the whole rod through the loop, I don't think I was wrong in assuming it can't be done.

I bet this is the first time this reel is discussed. Accurate Reel
The main reason saltwater reels do not have level winds is because they will not hold up when line is running off of the reel extremely fast, for long distances. When trolling in saltwater the boat speed is usually between 6 MPH and 9 MPH, add to that a fish hits and runs the opposite way, and hundreds of yards of line may be taken off the reel at blazing speeds. The level winds can not keep up causing them to break. Even on reels that are made more for dropping straight down, a fish can go on a blistering run, causing the level wind to freeze up. Some Saltwater reels made for bottom fish such as halibut, that don't make long runs, and are not trolled for, do have level winds on them.

School me on Chatterbaits.
At first I didn't have any luck with bladed jigs, because I fished them to fast. They felt like a square bill when I retrieved them, so I fished them fast with lots of jerks, and pauses like I did a square bill. At a a fast retrieve the vibration feels great but it seems to be to much for the bass. Once I started reeling them with a slower steady retrieve just fast enough to feel a good mild thump, adding just a few mild rod twitches and pauses, I started catching not only lots of bass, but bigger than average ones.

Carolina Rig and Palomar knots.
I don’t see how that would work. The loop will still have to go over the swivel and can’t if swivel is attached to main line. Would work if leader is first attached to swivel and then leader attached to main line.

Carolina Rig and Palomar knots.
After you put the loop through at the eye you can then place that loop over the swivel or lure and you will only have one tag end.

Carolina Rig and Palomar knots.
That is a very good knot for braid. Can be a bit bulky with other lines, but is very strong with all line.

Carolina Rig and Palomar knots.
That is what I thought, then a person would be able to pull the leader through the loop and make the knot, but both videos showed the angler tying the main line first, then the leader. I watched them both over and over trying to see what they were doing. It really doesn't matter, I use many different knots, and get by fine without tying the leader on with a Palomar, just curious. I use mono for my C Rig leaders, but have found the Palomar to be a good knot with fluorocarbon. I'm not a fan of the knot for braid, but I do know others that swear by it for braid.

Carolina Rig and Palomar knots.
I watched a video on Carolina Rigs. In the Video the angler said he uses three Palomar knots. He tied a Palomar to a barrel swivel on the main line, then tied the leader to the barrel swivel with a Palomar, and then tied the hook on the leader with again with a Palomar. My question is, how did he tie the leader to the swivel? Wouldn't the main line already attached, prohibit the knot from being tied? How would a person get the loop over the swivel with the main line attached? I often use a Palomar, but have always had to use another knot when attaching leaders to a swivel already attached to the main line. At first I wrote it off as a mistake on the video, but then I watched another instructional video on the C Rig. where the angler said the same thing. Both videos, they tied the knots quickly and without a close up look. I couldn't really tell what or how they were tying their knots. Both videos they mentioned their preference for the Palomar on all three knots. Both videos were from highly respected pros. I do not in any way doubt their expertise. How do they accomplish this? Have I been missing something all these years?

Monofilament floats, really?
Years ago, I bobber fished for King Salmon in Alaska. This was before spectra braids were available, and mono was basically the only line choice ( there was Dacron braid, but I never tried it). The mono would slowly sink, making it difficult to mend the line and set the hook. A trick I learned was putting wax on the line by running it through a grove in a block of wax. I also tried fly flotant, but the wax worked better. A few years later super braids which float well came out, and waxing mono became a useless forgotten trick. Mono has almost neutral buoyancy in fresh water, but does slowly sink. Fluorocarbon is heavy and sinks fast, which is why it has some slack line sensitivity.

tournament at Baccarac
My friend that told me about it said, the anglers are mostly guides from the lodges there. He also said that a few boats have Forward facing sonar, with experienced FFS anglers, and they are absolutely crushing them. That is from a friend of a friend's cousin, so there is a good chance it's a wild fish story, but I do believe the tournament weights are accurate. The Instagram post has a picture of the score board along with some commentary. The lodges all shut down this time of year, and the water is as low as it gets. Having the guides get together for some friendly competition, at the end of the season is probably a fun idea. I don't think there is a lot of money involved. A 12 pound 3 oz bass won an angler $2600 for big fish of the day. I don't know what the other pay outs are and am not certain if that is dollars or pesos. It would be interesting to get more information, but the Instagram page is all I'm able to find, and it lacks many details. 39 total DD caught in the first four days. I have no idea how many days the tournament is going for. I'm surprised it would be more than 4 days, but as I mentioned before, I have very little information.
