RW, Loomis BronzeBacks.
RW, I keep eye balling that G-Loomis BronzeBack spinning rod in SMR8825-SP 7'4" M 8-12 1/8-3/8. Ever had one in your hands?, and if so, what do you think? I don't feel like riding to Baltimore BP. Just asking. Thanks.

The Question EVERYONE can answer.
http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_74447_100003001_100000000_100003000_100-3-1 I would go with the Abu Garcia 4600 and the bionic blade comb. This reel will still be working when you are 30. You just can't beat them in my book. Tough. The Bionic Blades are decent rods for the money, as well. You are 15 so I picked the 4600 over the 5600. You can chose whether it be in left of right hand. As far as the rod I would go with the Medium 6'6". Its a good all around rod and the 6'6" will cast lighter lures like crankbaits and 1/4oz spinnerbaits a little better than a 6'. Get a 1pc rod, and pay the extra 6.00, absolutly. I think this setup would last you a lot of years. Stick some #12 test on that reel, which is a good all around line, and have fun---Jim And its 134.00, hard to beat. If you don't trust any of our opinions pm Reel Mech. He is a expert and knows what last and what does not.

Baitcasting reel vs Open Faced
I am pretty much, baitcaster for green bass and spinning for brown, although, for brown bass and spinnerbaits and topwaters I use a baitcaster. Plus, I throw a lot of my senkos and jerkbaits on spinning gear and #8 test early in the year. I am much more comfortable with a baitcaster for some reason. I would use one for smallies in the river if it weren't for line pickup and feel. Lots of times a big smallie will just suck in a tube and never move in the winter. You really got to pay attention or you will miss the bite.

Never mind the baitcaster gremlins for backlashs
I can deal with the occasional backlash on the baitcaster because you caught your rod on something. Its those little gremlins that reach up when your not looking and tie a loop in your spinning reel line. YOU KNOW THE KIND. You can hear the loop fluttering out through your line guides. The more you try to peel line off to fix it, the more it looks like a casting net, lol. ;D

Tuna Cowboys
I hear you LBH and, I agree. We sort of have the same delema with the Rockfish ( Striped Bass ) in the Chesapeake Bay. I know they said the catch they would tow in was worth in the millions. Most of the catch go to Japan.

I was truly scared..........
That would have spooked me as well. A hand saw and brush clippers does not seem like the proper tools to fight a Mt. Lion.

I don't know what to think
If he is that happy over a 2-6 he is going to love the Susky. Typically, say if you have a 40-80 fish day there you will have a lot of fish that run from 12-17 inches, with some 18-20's thrown in the mix. A 4 even to 4-4 you can expect, especially in the spring, fall and winter, in which is the best time. Seems most of the " fives " we catch are like 5 to 5-6, There are six pounders and better in the Susky but, its not like it was in the later 70's and early 80's. That place gets pounded. In the past few years I only have a dozen or so that ran 6 and almost all of them were in Dec/Jan. I had a guy in the boat with me one time that got one up to the boat that was a 7 or better and it broke off. Lots of 5-4's and 5-1's, and I don't know why they size like that also, it seems when they get five or better they tend to be loners and knowing this water is key. Winter, or , Nov up to ice is big fish time as well as early spring. There are a ton of baits to use in the Susky but, by far the best and all you really need are tubes, hair jigs/101 pork frog, Super Flukes, grubs, senkos, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits and topwaters like Zara Spooks and Puppies, Spittin Image, or Sammy 100's and buzzbaits like a 1/4oz Cavitron. The best times are when the water is in the 38-45 degree range, the river is on the rise and muddy and is running around 5-5 to 6 at the Harrisburg Station. Look on NOAA under river conditons. It puts them in the eddies on the islands and banks and they are easy to find. Destinations for fishing are many. I like the City Island in Harrisburg Pa area up to Montgomerys Ferry. DO NOT BRING A PROP BOAT to this area as you won't get far. If you run a prop boat you can put in at the Goldsboro ramp across from Three Mile Island. You still have to be careful. If you want to run a glass boat you can run one above the dam at Conawingo in Baltimore or way above the Harrisburg area to the next dam. I cannot remember the name of that area but, if you look in the Northeast section in this site look for a guy named Izzy. He is a guide up there and seems to do real well on big smallies. I can honestly tell you that you will catch somewhere between 0 and 100,lol, and I have been on both ends of that scale !!! Hope this helps. Good luck.

Smallies in Lakes - Hard to Find?
The first place I would look for are areas near the mouth of the river you talked about. Also, hard bottom, gravel bottoms, rocky areas, ledges. If the river feeds the impoundment I would follow the old river channel that runs through the lake and look for ledges, boulders, rocks, drops on my depthfinder plus, smallies like some current. Sunken islands and humps are one of my favorite places to find smallies in lakes, as well as, points and dropoffs. Grass in a little deeper water, say around 12-17' is also a good place to search. If it were me I would surely start out at the mouth of that river and use a tube in Green Pumpkin, Dark melon, and Junebug, Pearl Super Flukes, Spinnerbaits in white, and Zoom Centipedes in Green Pumpkin t-rigged on a 1/8 or 3/16ths bullet head or rigged on a Mojo setup and grubs in green pumpkin and bluegill. Just some ideas.

Do Bass get conditioned to baits?
I don't know what to think about that question anymore. I always thought they did but, the Susquehanna smallmouth don't seem to be. I mean that river has gotten pounded with tubes for many years, and they still whack them. Tubes by far are the best and most popular bait there. I have not been there in awhile because of my health but, last fall I went up with a friend of mine and we had 126 and I counted 21 boats through out the day. Who knows?

Tuna Cowboys
Did anyone see the show, " The Tuna Cowboys ", or at least I think thats what it was called. These guys put out these gigantic nets, and trap these tuna. They then coral them. The nets are floating and they hual them back in to shore in the gigantic nets. Divers go in and repair the nets, release sharks and all kind of neat stuff. It was simply amazing.

We need a guide
When you are looking into guides be sure to ask for references. Make a few calls to previous clients he or she had. Anyone can get a license. The last 5 or 6 years of my 17 years I watched, shall we say, not very good guys get into the buisiness. Most are great, just be sure to get references. They can tell you how their day went.
