Reel Maintenance : Unique Tools ?
Depends, you might need spool shaft pin remover and torx bit especially for Daiwa. If you can get a hand on C-Clip removal tool, that will save a lot of headache.

Has anyone found they are happy with non high end rods and reels
I hear you. Unfortunately I don’t have kids and none of my family members here fish ???. I’m not too worry though since my best friend and best fishing buddy in Thailand already show interest of inheritance all my fishing gears.??? Hopefully my wife knows how much I love this stuffs and won’t put mine on garage sale. Unlike my brother who I left him a few rod and reels. He sold them once I moved here.

Has anyone found they are happy with non high end rods and reels
From this example it is not about “price”, but more like action and power that you prefer from your old, cheaper rod. I’m the same if you can see my rods are in 100-200 price range. I don’t care much about high end rod with the best sensitivity. Once OLD wise guy said” sensitivity is in your brain not your hand” (yes it was you @Catt???). Once I found the rod I like, weight, balance, comfortable reel seat and tip action, doesn’t matter cheap or expensive, I would buy more. One of my favorite rod for jerkbait is 20 yeas old Castaway rod, and I still use Quantum response (50 bucks) rod from time to time.

Feathered Treble Hooks
Last time I have to replace one on my pop-max I use Mustad. Size you should match the original. I think either #6 or #4. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Mustad_Feathered_Treble_Hook_Red_Hook_2pk/descpage-MDTR.html?from=gshop&gclid=CjwKCAjwiLGGBhAqEiwAgq3q_grO9L8eVnabbYdSj444h_qqsNpqhWOGmLD8mRgsNI8rLsLqdGDxWRoC9z4QAvD_BwE

Has anyone found they are happy with non high end rods and reels
Tell me about it. I just sent picture of conquest BFS to my wife. Hopefully she approve. I don’t know what I’m gonna do with the reel but it just look good side by side with CQ50 lol. Same as Yellow Pixy that I have to have it because it look good with my airy red pixy.

Has anyone found they are happy with non high end rods and reels
It is not just about catching fish, yes any rod or reel can catch fish, fish doesn’t care. It is about beautiful piece of equipment that will last you a lifetime. You are happy just to look at it. And when the time to give to your kids, they still would be proud of what they got. Don’t get me wrong, I have cheap exceler LT and SLX and still using it daily, but I would call myself crazy if I said I prefer those over these. As I mentioned you are happy of what you can afford not prefer.

For the bearing knowledgeable
I just set my up on top of aquarium air pump a few hours or overnight. I can see the bearing spin itself, and acetone turn yellow with lot and lots of debris. After soaking in acetone, I soak and swirl a couple time in 95% alcohol. Shake the excess alcohol or blow with my mouth, let them sit on paper towel, all dry in about 10 minutes.

Has anyone found they are happy with non high end rods and reels
I’m just happy to use what I can afford. Now I can afford 200 dollars reel and I wouldn’t use blackmax nor dream about those 5-700 dollars reels. I’m not trashing low end and not questioning the one who love using high end neither.

For the bearing knowledgeable
I’ve seen this mentioned a few time by using compressed air or air can to dry the bearing. Those dry bearing gonna spin over 10,000 rpm, doesn’t sound good for bearing with no oil.

For the bearing knowledgeable
Don’t quote me I’m not claim to be an expert just my observation. Last time when I talk to Shimano, they mention “bearing is considered for replaceable part for major service” they are cheap and easy to replace so Shimano doesn’t expect them to last a lifetime or cheaper to replace than cleaning. Shimano brush grease on top of bearing to prolong bearing life (not pack with grease). Two years old bearing with only 2 drops of oil per year, plus heavy used and a lot of fish(a lot of loaded and spin), that sound fair to me. Maybe next set of bearing you can add a drop of oil every month to prevent evaporation and water intrusion. It might last longer. Some of my bearing got worn out too, I checked by clean/flush them then spin them dry, if a lot of noise they got replace.

In love with the abu garcia black max, your opinions?
It is one reasonable reel for it price point. My friend found one that neglected on his dock (don’t know how long). I cleaned them up inside out and it still works. Better than your old reel? It might be just illusion of new thing better than old thing, or you just need to clean up your old reel. Any reels should last a long time with proper maintenance.
-
Do you have to clean your reels?
You can contact me anytime if you need help. Take picture along while removing things. Baitcaster is very easy to maintenance if you don’t plan to take everything apart. Which reel is this? I’m not claim to be expert but open up many reels in the past. Spinning on the other hand, I’d recommend professional, it is pretty easy to mess up.

Do you have to clean your reels?
Just like everyone said, you periodically clean outside your reel, clean worm gear, oil bearing, clean spool shaft free of dirt and oil. I use rem oil to clean worm gear, I use either 80w oil or grease on worm gear. I only oil bearing as needed but flush the bearing with every major cleaning. I use regular bantam or Daiwa oil (come with reel) Depends on how much used on reel, I typically do major service (internal) once every year or two. I don’t strip down everything, only clean out old grease and re-grease all the gears and flush the bearing. Mainshaft bearing, frame bearing(the one support pinion gear) and AR bearing only get cleaned or oil when needed. I used to drop off my reels to Shimano/Daiwa down in OC but now I just service my own for conveniences since I fish almost every day.

Looking for new baitcasting reel
I had mine about two years fish it hard, jig, topwater, chatterbait you name it. I use SLX more than bantam and it still works flawlessly.

What’s wrong with me! No motivation to go fishing?
I feel you sir. Been there done that myself. Now I turn to another hobby (golf) and use fishing as my unwind, only an hour or just one fish each time is good enough for me. I fish alone for the most part and that get pretty boredom sometime. I got the urge to take kayak out a few times earlier this year and that’s that. Gave a couple of my setup to friends that just move in here, in hope to get them to like bass fishing but no luck so far.

Looking for new baitcasting reel
If you never own a Shimano, you should give it a try. You might like centrifugal brake from Shimano more than mag force. The SLX XT 4 bearing, 115-129 bucks. Smaller than Tatula, more comfortable at least for me to palm. Once dial in it will cast a long way, may I say better than Tatula? I think SLX come with felt drag but you can upgrade to carbon tech for not much more. To me though the felt drag is enough, I’m not worry about drag slip, I’d rather it slip than broke off on hook set. If you want solid hook set and you know you line can handle it, use your thumb. If you notice from this video, I used my thumb all those hook set because I use 12lb Izorline, and didn’t want those bass to run into cover. I use SLX along side my Bantam just fine. Btw in case you wondering, those were 4” Senko.
- Why on the earth my brand new Antares spooling like this?

Not better though

Looking for new baitcasting reel
Bearing count not really mean anything as much nowadays. The SLX come with 3 bearing but you can simply add one to the mainshaft or get SLX XT. Those 3 bearing are the most critical parts to have a reel function flawlessly the rest is just luxurious or to make the reel feel more steadier. Daiwa is alway smoother than Shimano comparable model but not always the furthest casting distance. Shimano requires a little more learning curve to thumb the spool, but once you dial in you are good. To use either one it is come down to size of reel, brake system and line capacity.

Hardbaits VS Plastics & Costs...???
That is true on top water but not so much with say lipless crank. I’ll be lucky if I catch more than 5 fish from one. Ask tens of those on bottom of the lake. I still stock more though since those are the one I use beside jerkbait and topwater.
