Screeching drag, please help
I have tried various adjustments and I think it's either the spool or the pinion. It feels like vibration in the spool, never damaged the spool. Thanks for the idea, I will take it apart once again and try resaeting the pinion gear.

Screeching drag, please help
If I hold the line and reel against the drag, set low, the handle spins forward silently and the spool stays in place. There is no backwards play in the handle. I suppose it's possible, but I didn't touch anti reverse bearing. I can cast and retrieve line no problem. So I would think the pinion is engaging the spool, otherwise the spool wouldn't release for the cast or retrieve line.

Screeching drag, please help
Hello everyone, I cleaned my Daiwa Alphas SV TW and now I am getting an awful screeching sound when pulling drag. I greased the carbon washer, as well as tried it dry, same results. Reel casts and retrieves fine, no noise or resistance. Tried 3 times now to solve this by tearing the reel down and putting it back together. It's driving me nuts trying to figure this out. Any ideas?

Shimano Curado MGL 151 and Scorpion MGL 151?
Scorpion 150 mgl is based on the curado 200 frame, but a 150 size spool. Curado 150 mgl is a new frame design, a bit smaller. Digitaka is very reliable and fast shipping. 3-4 days from Japan to Canada. Good customer service as well.

What tactic have you completely given up on?
Hollow body Frogs and chatterbaits have one more season to prove themselves, caught a few but nothing consistent.

Which rod(s) pull (s) double duty?
ML-F spinning for multi species and finesse. M-F casting for a lighter moving baits, weightless or light weight texas rigs, some finesse. Jack of all trades combo. MH-R casting for heavier cover, heavier moving baits, texas rigs, jigs, Frogs, buzz baits, etc. Never take all three, usually one or two at a time. Which ones depends on time of year, presentation, cover, etc.

Shimano stuff
The SLX MGL 71 was a great little reel that felt very free and smooth. Drag was very smooth. Handled a 20lb pike like a champ. However, as I mentioned earlier, I prefer small reels. The SLX MGL is a small reel, but the brake dial on the side does take up a bit more room than say the curado 71 MGL K that has the brake dial more to the front of the reel. This is a very nick picky thing on my part, I am seeking as perfect as I can find. I didn't like the thumb bar on the SLX, it has a raised edge on the side that rubbed my thumb and caused irritation. The Curado and Alphas are much better in that respect. Again, personal thing.. Overall they are very close though. I think the extra cost for the curado is worth it with the double supported pinion and a slight edge in smoothness. But again, I am looking for the smallest, most comfortable reel, that is solid and smooth. The Alphas is quickly becoming my favorite. More solid, but slightly less build quality. Mine has a small raised edge along the frame that I find annoying. The Curado has a screw hole right where my finger sits that also feels annoying. Can't win them all I guess But, that Alphas reel is smooth, tiny, fully capable of handling big fish. Control is the big gain, only baitcasting reel that I can skip with due the the SV brakes. But can also throw for distance on lighter brake settings. Curado is a great casting reel too, but I can't skip with it. By no means an expert. Slightly less weight as well.

Shimano stuff
I have owned the Stradic FL, Curado 200K, SLX MGL 71, and Curado MGL 71 K. Lately I have been liking some of the Daiwa offerings. The Alphas SV TW and Tatula LT specifically. I prefer smaller reels in general nowdays. Sold most of my Shimano reels, but still have the Curado MGL 71 K. Love that little reel. I have nothing bad to say about Shimano reels in any way. Very solid and smooth reels. Build quality is excellent.

For the Daiwa Fans a DC Reel
To each their own. Not for me personally. I can appreciate what they are going for but seems unnecessary.

New Tatula spinning reel
I bought the 2018 model 3 weeks ago at a steep discount. Figured the updated model was coming soon. The MQ seems to add a bit of weight when comparing the old and new ballistic. Will be curious of the specs and reviews of the new model. Haven't used the 2018 model yet, but initial improvements are positive.

Rod selection decision
Last year I reworked my collection. Tried every rod at every store near me. Brand had little bearing. Comfort, overall feel, action / power of the blank, guides, weight, build quality, user reviews to gauge sensitivity and durability, and price were the qualities I focused on.

Spinning Reel cost
OK, I have to ask about you're experience with the Tatula LT as I just bought one.

Bass one xt rod?
I have no experience with that rod. Price wise I have found the $200 mark to be where quality really shows, there are exceptions obviously. I can recommend Daiwa Rebellion 2 piece rods. Very light weight, sensitive, strong, and impeccable build quality.

Bass one xt rod?
I have bought a few higher end 2 piece rods and have had no issues with sensitivity or the rod coming apart during a cast or the attached blank twisting, misaligning the guides. Cheaper 2 piece rods have these problems for sure, but not good quality rods.

Spinning Reel cost
Lighter weight, smoother gear mesh, smoother drag for lighter line, overall refinement are gained by spending a bit more. After the $200-250 mark, I think it's a bit less return on your money.

Current rod and reel grouping
Currently ... Daiwa Rebellion 6'8" ML-F spinning rod paired with a Daiwa Tatula LT 2000 Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth 6'10" M-F casting rod paired with a Shimano Curado MGL 71 Daiwa Rebellion 6'10" MH-R casting rod paired with a Daiwa Alphas SV TW Sold off most of my gear to finance all of the above over the last year. This year was about fine tuning the gear to my style and preferred techniques with focus on versatility, comfort, sensitivity, and light weight. All of the above rods are 2 piece rods for maximum convenience for transport. Bank fishing or kayak most of the time, occasional boat trip. Also reworked my tackle storage at home and tackle bag system for maximum efficiency, trying to focus on minimalism, but still versatile for any situation. Can't wait for the spring to get on the water again and put the gear to use.

Possible rod damage?
I would return it.

Stripped the Drive Shaft on a band new Scorpion DC 151 - HELP!!!
Fellow Canadian. Shimano Canada is a dream to deal with, called them last year when I broke a frame screw. They shipped out a new one to me free of charge. I would research if the north American DC will fit. I remember researching reels and a lot of the Japanese reels share the same parts as the American models, I think it was a YouTube video comparing scorpion bfs, slx bfs, and curado bfs, parts were interchangable. Mostly different paint jobs and sometimes different bearings (same size, maybe higher quality). Sorry about your luck, that sucks. But I am sure it will work out in the end. Good luck to you and let us know how it turned out.

Opinion on reel condition
I keep my rods and reels covered when not in use and during transport. When actually fishing I try not to scratch the reels, but it's a tool at the end of the day. I never lay my gear on rocks though, grass or ground yes.

Spinning Reel - Shimano Ultegra, Diawa Tatula or ??
I just purchased a Daiwa Tatula LT 2000. Winter up here so no experience with it yet. Initial impressions are very positive though. I had a Shimano Stradic FL 2500 for 3 years and it was rock solid and smooth. Only sold it because it was more reel than I needed for finesse techniques. A 2000S would be a better fit. Shimano and Daiwa both make good reels. I would look at the finer details of each and weigh what is important to you.

What Line Are You Using For Your 70 Sized Shimano Casting Reel?
Tried 20lb braid on my curado 70 mgl, it's doable but I felt it was too thin for my liking. Currently exploring copolymer lines and liking yo zuri hybrid 10lb on my Daiwa Alphas SV TW and P-Line C21 12lb on my curado 70 MGL.
