  1. This is budget boat cover hack level genius. I will be using it next spring when the boat comes out of hibernation.
  2. An oil change may cost a few dollars and time now but a lower unit that freezes and cracks will keep you off the water and put a bigger hole in your pocket come spring
  3. I'll second this as I have a 93SV plus as well. If you can wait until the Black Friday sale, you might be able to get the 9 inch for what the 7 inch costs currently. Another note, last year the Black Friday pricing went live on the gps store site on Wednesday afternoon.
  4. Most side view capable transducers from Garmin are going to run you ~$300. If you are OK with "older" technology, there are quite a few new, unused CV52 transducers that people are offloading for short money because it doesn't have a true downscan crystal and they "upgraded" to the GT52 model when it was put back into production.
  5. I fish them on my home pond anytime I just want to catch something. They work really great when I bring the kids in the canoe. I cast them out, hand the rod to the kids and paddle in an S pattern trolling them behind as we go down the shore line. We catch everything that swims in that pond on them. Its a blast when a 24" pickerel comes dashing out of the weeds and slams it.
  6. I have a 1983 or 84 Johnson 60HP outboard on my boat. This weekend while out fishing, my motor seemed to bog down, sputter and die, when I went from clutch in to about 3/4 throttle. I could bring up the RPMs and speed to about 5mph but any throttle I gave it beyond that point would cause the motor to bog down. If I caught the process early and hit the choke on the key as it was bogging down it would sputter, catch and get the boat on plane with no issues. As long as I stayed in the higher RPM range the motor worked fine. When I slowed I could not bring the speed back up again with out it bogging down and hitting the choke. I am assuming it is and air/fuel thing because of the choke making it come up but was wondering if those with more experience might have a suggestion. I had this problem before and the mechanic said the fuel lines needed to be replaced because they were rigid and cracking instead of soft and flexible and fuel was leaking out. I replaced all the fuel lines from the tank to the motor, internal lines from the hookup to the fuel pump, pump to carbs, and the return lines, things seemed to be fine early this season but now the problem has returned. The lines are still soft and there was no noticeable fuel leaking under the cover.
  7. In order of catching for this year Rainbow trout Creek chub Brook trout Pumpkinseed Bluegill Yellow perch White sucker Largemouth bass Chain pickerel Black crappie Golden shiner Bullhead
  8. Is the TM grounded, not just connected to the negative side of the battery, but to an actual ground? On bigger boats the ground is typically the engine block. I made sure all my batteries had a wire going back to the motor and my interference went away. I'm not sure what the ground point would be on a Sun Dolphin.
  9. It sounds like it went from being stowed on the deck to deployed when he hit a large wake cruising down the lake. If that is the case, I would assume the depth collar was not slid down the shaft and tightened against the lift assist housing to prevent accidental deployment as is recommended in the owners manual. We are all in a rush to get to the next fishing spot but the 5 extra seconds it takes to secure your items might have saved you thousands of dollars.
  10. You will see bait on all scans, wide, medium, and narrow, but the area covered is beam width and depth dependent. The wide beam will show you more of a coverage area on the screen. A ball or cloud of bait is described that way because that is what it looks like on the screen. The light yellow in your pictures is what it would look like but usually they will be more concentrated and do not go to the bottom and get the stronger return at the base
  11. To start off, are the images from a stationary Deeper or are you moving it across the water? I ask because stationary images and moving images can look the same but show very different things. My interpretations will assume you are moving it across the water. Also, with the small beam angle and only 8' of water you are looking down in cone that ends up the size of a dinner plate. As to your specific questions and my interpretations of you images Fish depth is at the peak of the arch. Species identification is best done with knowledge of the water body and its inhabitants and making an educated guess, or by hook and observe. The fish images displayed would be at the top of the arches if they were turned off. A word of caution with the fish images, most units display fish images much more frequently than actual fish being there. If you understand arches, leave the symbols off. In the top image, the yellow scatter is more likely junk in the water, be it weeds or just floating debris. I wouldn't trust the fish symbols to actual fish in this picture. The middle image, again I would say weeds or debris, leaning more towards weeds due to them going all the way to the bottom and getting a green return at the base. The bottom image I would say the same but there might be something where the red is. It is a stronger return than whats around it. The color in itself does not indicate a huge fish just a stronger return. Youtube will be helpful but it cannot replace time spent on the water. Find an area where you can see or know whats in the water and use your Deeper there. Try it over sand, rock, mud, weeds, wood, etc. The time you spend learning how your unit shows different things is way more valuable to you than the time spend watching someone else show you whats on their screen.
  12. I drive a 2004 Titan as my daily driver and for pulling the boat. I currently have ~200k on it. I had a timing belt/chain issue at 24k miles and almost grenaded the motor. Nissan covered all repair costs and my rental. Since then I have had the standard Titan issues, vent tube on the rear end leaked, transmission cooler let go and it's located in the radiator so it filled my transmission with antifreeze, the brake judder is awesome, the vent controllers for cabin air have all broken so airflow goes to everywhere at the same time, I replace the windshield every 2 years because my job takes me off the road frequently and the cab flex pops the glass from the drivers side at about eye level, the evap system vent solenoid only lasts about 15k miles because the tube is routed to a horrible location and it picks up road grime and seizes the slide. Even with all those issues, I bought my Titan with the options I wanted in 2004 for $22,000, which was 7-8k less than I could even start to get one of the big 3 for, and I would do it over again.
  13. I believe what you are seeing is the thermocline. This is the layer that separates the warm surface water from the cold deeper water. Temperature drops quickly in that layer and density of water changes with the temp giving you this blue line on the screen. It will not be there when the surface water cools and can mix with the bottom. This mixing and transition is the fall turnover and you should be seeing it in a few weeks or so.
  14. I believe that if you sell it, you are responsible to pay the sales tax on the item whether it is through amazon or the FM here. Retailers charge the sales tax to the consumer and pay it to the governing body. If you make the sale you are supposed to pay the tax associated with it even if you didn't charge it to the next consumer.
  15. A dedicated power wire direct from the battery including a fuse is the best way to avoid interference issues. That being said, if it was wired into the panel before and you didn't have issues I would do it the same way again.
  16. I wear a set of Carhartt shoreline bibs. I bought them for my job when I was working outside in the rain on the pipe laying crew. They held up great to the grit and grime and only got retired from work use because I got promoted to a nice office job. Currently, I wear them all summer long when I am using the canoe instead of the boat. They keep the drips from the paddle from soaking my pants first thing in the morning. I can easily get them on and off while in the canoe due to the full length zipper along both legs. They have never been an issue with keeping me dry. My only "complaint" is the lack of a zipper in the front for after your second cup of coffee.
  17. If you set the hook like you would on a bass you will more times than not lose a crappie. They are referred to as papermouth for a reason. Minnow imitations will be your best baits. I do really well using Berkley swimshad in 3" firetiger on 4lb line. Cast it out and retrieve back letting it flutter down for a second or two every now and then. A light sweep will set the hook. When you find one, keep casting to the same area, there is almost always more there.
  18. 8 is sufficient, 6 is better due to less voltage drop but it will be larger. Remember that any length you figure if you use wiring tables needs to be the round trip distance not just the battery to TM
  19. Use the navionics web app but make sure on the bottom left that you select SonarChart and not Navionics. The SonarChart option will show the lines you are looking for
  20. If the DI transducer is in a good location, mount the SI one there and move the DI to the port side of the motor. I believe that the SI transducer is going to give you DI as well so maybe the original DI can go to the bow if that is an option too.
  21. I'll share any and all information I can with the kids and the old timers. From my experience they are the ones more likely to give you a hand loading/unloading and will give you truthful information as well. The guys that are "always catching monsters" don't need my help or advice on how to hook a few dinks to enjoy the day.
  22. As soon as I could hold a rod I was out on the boat with my dad and grandfather. I counted as a fisherman and that meant we could take another limit. My earliest memory is from the late 80s when i was maybe 5 or 6 and is of being out on the ocean trolling for bluefish at the Isle of Shoals off the coast of NH. I heard the clicker on the reel click about 5 times and looked back to see the flash as the fish pulled the line. Nobody else had heard it and I grabbed the rod and started cranking. My grandfather was ticked that I would mess up the spread of baits and started yelling at me for touching the rod. I told him there was a fish on it but he didn't believe me because he hadn't heard the line peeling out as a typical bite would have done. I didn't listen to him when he told me to put the rod down and I kept bringing the fish in. When I finally got it along the side of the boat the fish was about 12" in length and was probably the smallest one we caught that day. I can still remember the change in tone on the boat as he admitted that I was right and gave me a huge pat on the back and told be that I was turning out to be a great fisherman. I still smile thinking about that day and would give anything to have another day to spend fishing with him.
  23. I've been stopped 3 times in freshwater and just about every trip in the ocean. The only time I was without was when I was 14. We took a trip to China Lake in Maine. I asked at the local bait shop if I needed a license and was told "no because you are under 16". My buddy and I fished all week out a a canoe catching and releasing white perch by the 100s. The last day of our trip the warden came out to see us. He had been watching us all week from his porch. Asked us about life jackets and safety equipment, then asked where we were from and for our licenses. We told him the guy at the bait shop told us we didn't need one because we were under 16, the warden told us that non-residents needed one if you were over 12. We pleaded our case, he followed us on our bikes to the bait shop and we talked with the guy behind the counter who confirmed we had asked about needing a license earlier in the week and were told we didn't need one. The warden let us off with a written warning and informed the bait shop guy that he needed to brush up on his regulations and make sure to ask if the kids under 16 but over 12 are from out of state when vacationers stop in asking about licenses.
  24. Never caught a bill fish. Ive been on multiple trips but haven't been able to get one to the boat yet
  25. I had a similar issue with my motor in that I could get it to turn over sometimes but not all the time. The ball on mine wouldn't get hard and stay that way either. I ended up replacing the ball and the fuel lines on the motor. Now its only about 1/2 a squeeze and the ball gets hard and the motor starts up every time. If the ball won't get hard then the fuel you are trying to push to the motor is going somewhere else or the ball itself is leaking.
