  1. I work for a family owned excavation company. Started when I was done with college, not after a degree, but when I realized college was not the answer for me. I've been with them for 16 years now and have gone from a laborer, to our construction layout guy, to our estimator and now do assistant project management work along with some of the estimating. In the APM portion of my job, I get to do some hiring when we take on a larger job and need a few extra bodies. My boss, the company owner, told me hiring guys is the triangle rule of 10. For every 10 guys we hire, 4 won't make it a week, 3 will make it for the season, 2 will be around for a few seasons, and 1 will be here for 10 years or more. He has been pretty accurate with his predictions. We routinely have guys that apply, get hired and quit all within a week because they don't realize how physically demanding the labor position is. The ones that stay for the season and don't come back are the guys who think they know it all after their first season and deserve to sit in the seat of an excavator, loader or dozer, because "that job isn't hard to do". The guys who come back next year are the guys that get it and know they need to put in the time before moving up. In the past 3 years most of the guys in the bottom two tiers of the triangle have been the 18-25 year olds. The top two tiers are the 25-35 year olds with the occasional younger guy that has a dad who was in the industry and taught him right while he was growing up.
  2. A 15HP motor would push that rig around. That motor is going to be 100+ lbs. I'm not sure I would classify that as portable.
  3. Right from a manufacturer, the top of the motor housing should be 12" below the water surface https://www.minnkotamotors.com/support/faqs/how-do-i-select-shaft-length As for the vibrations, how sturdy is the transom or the connection to the transom. If the attachment point is not solid then any higher thrust will cause a vibration that will make the motor feel like it is trying to jump off the boat.
  4. If it's not the thermocline my money would be on junk in the water. My home pond gets a layer like that after a good rain, all the stuff that washes in forms a band in the water column.
  5. I fish alone but prefer to have my kids with me. They can't or don't want to spend hours out on the water so the wife and I have come up with a compromise that makes everyone happy. I get to fish mornings from whenever I decide to get up and head out, then around lunchtime I give her a call and she meets me at the ramp with the kids. She heads out for some free time and I take the kids out for a hour or two to catch some panfish.
  6. Is it possible that the head of the TM is too low in the mount when you lift it? The motor doesn't look like it is clearing the base of the mount before it starts laying it back to flat
  7. These things happen, not much you can do to prevent something like that without stopping fishing completely and there is no enjoyment in that. Circle of life, you fed a turtle or a bunch of craws.
  8. We did the bunks to my dad's trailer in his driveway. His boat is a 28' Blackfin that we did some serious repair work too this past year. We used a lot of boat jackstands and inched the trailer forward little by little. It was a very tedious process, you can start out on the stands but need to add and remove them as you get to a horizontal trailer brace. Its the same process when you put it back on the trailer. Had we been able to float the boat and work at the ramp it would have been much easier. Take your tools to the ramp.
  9. I believe to link everything together you would still need a network hub. Console to console just a cable will work but if you add in the panoptix and want it to share stuff between units you've added a 3rd port into the equation and need something that connects the 3 together.
  10. The best advice I was given years ago when looking for a new car, 2004ish, about a Hyundai or any Korean car, was that if you wanted to test drive a lot of cars, you should buy one. They spent so much time in the shop you would be experiencing loaners and rentals and would have a great idea of what your next car should be.
  11. Trial and error is how I figure it out by the day. Which ever looks better I use
  12. Looks like trex decking boards. They aren't slippery anymore than a standard decking board. If they are fastened to something sturdy, they won't warp
  13. Thousands of boats are stored outdoors each winter season. Garage and indoor stored boats always look "nicer" than a boat stored in the elements, but if you would be storing it outside during the usage season and as long as you winterize it properly and cover it appropriately for the snow load it may encounter, it will be OK
  14. I like it! No more casts out of the viewing area or action not being in front of the camera. Being able to move the camera around and see whats going on almost makes you feel like your in the boat.
  15. I saw 2 guys who had clearly been drinking too much power load a beautiful 25' offshore fishing center console boat. The first guy backed the trailer in and the second guy loaded the boat onto the trailer. The whole process was extremely smooth. The issues came when the first guy put the truck in drive and started to pull the boat up the ramp. The second guy still had the motor running and when the prop broke the water surface the first guy stopped and yelled at him to turn off the motor. Guy two shuts down the motor and guy one starts up the ramp again. I forgot to mention, they had an e-z loader trailer and never connected the winch strap. When the truck lurched ahead the trailer went with it and the boat stayed in place. The skeg and prop served as a great anchor as the trailer was pulled from under the boat and left the boat sitting on the ramp. They tried to use the winch strap to reload it but it broke. They had the ramp tied up for 2 hours before a big enough wrecker came to sling the boat into the air to get it back on the trailer.
  16. The stripper population of the cape has dwindled recently with the closing of Zachary's. I bet you can still find one or two but they won't be in any abundance like they were in years past.
  17. Any aftermarket tilt and trim is going to set the motor back from the transom ~6" which will mean prop height will be 1.5-2" higher than it is now, it's almost like a mini-manual jack. The one upside to a future motor purchase is the tilt and trim will hold its value so if you don't need it you can get back a good portion of your investment.
  18. A used piranha max 4 di would be in the $100 range and I'd bet you can find one on Craigslist/ebay/Facebook that someone upgraded from recently
  19. Beetle spins from Walmart's clearance rack, 2 in the package for $0.50. I cleaned them out and routinely catch small bass and crappie on them when fishing with my kids
  20. You can catch fish there but you need to work for them if you are in any of the open areas. Most people enjoy the bobber and worm in the open areas and there is almost always someone fishing there. In my experiences at this location, bass can be found on the northern end of the park where the pads and weeds are or on the southern end by where the culvert is along the rocks. There is better fishing to be had if you use the trail network around the pond and find areas that are harder to access.
  21. I fish out of an Old Town Guide 147. I'm a larger guy so when I'm alone, I turn it around and paddle backwards. This keeps my weight more towards the center and keeps the bow from pointing to the sky. I also built a homemade stabilizer for it so I can stand without having to worry too much about it being tipy, again, I'm a bigger guy and not as nimble as I once was. When I take the wife out we use it as intended. With the kids, I still paddle backwards and have them face me. This canoe is heavy, like 75 lbs, but it is rugged. I have no fears of beaching it and being worried about rocks or other hard stuff damaging the hull. Solo setup Kids with me
  22. Shop pond in hampstead has access all around it. It's not very big and they did major repair work to the outlet last year so I don't know if it still holds any fish beyond what gets stocked for the kids fishing derby. Hedgehog pond in Salem is the same way but there are decent fish in it. Most of the larger bodies of water in the area are all private shore access, some have ramps or car top access but shore fishing is tough. The Merrimack river or Massabesic in Manchester is probably your best bet for access to decent fishing.
  23. Flat out quitting fishing would be a hard thing to do for anyone who had anything more than a fleeting interest. Taking a break is more likely what happens. I would consider it truly quitting when you have the ability to drive by any body of water and not check to see if there is a boat out there fishing or wonder what kind of fish might be in it. Even the guys who have to give it up for home/health/other reasons, I'd bet they still wonder and if they do, they haven't quit.
  24. Had a chance to get out this morning. The wife told me we had someplace to be in the afternoon and asked me not to take the boat out. She didn't say anything about the canoe so I loaded up before sunrise and hit my local pond. Surface water temps started out at 62.6 and were 68.x when I got off the water at 2ish. Took me a while to get on them but once I figured out they were super shallow, like 1', I had some success. They were all tight to the shoreline and buried in the new growth pads. I ended up with 8 for the day, 4 were respectable and 4 were dinks, all on an unweighted watermelon senko. Also got a dozen pickerel or so fishing the deep weed edge casting a white chatterbait with a rage swimmer trailer.
