Sounds like fun! I am the same way when i'm catching fish on fast moving baits, no time for pics, just want to keep fishing.

Try using a smaller, lighter hook. The bait will sink slower.

That's cool! A friend of mine caught a 36lb. carp also on a jig. I took him almost 45 min. to land it!

I only use spinning tackle for jerkbaits. You have alot more control over your lure.
