greatest mash up of all time
there are others that are good, but this one is great:

Deep Purple
anyone? the early 70's stuff is what i love. as a guitar player, of course i dig ritchie blackmore's playing. i know what people say about his personality. i don't care, i don't want to be his friend, i just wanna listen to him play. these days he likes to do really boring stuff where everything sounds like greensleeves or something. i liked the old ritchie. then there's jon lord. holy smokes. i know lots of folks who hate any kind of keyboard in a hard rock band. i don't care what they say, because deep purple (and later dio) proved that to be a crock of poopy. jon lord is the pai mei of the hammond. jon lord is so bad-@55, that rick wakeman probably mows his lawn.

Casting Form
certainly, there is a zen aspect to it. smooth is always best. always i've tried to apply that philosophy in as many other activities as possible. there have been some successes, and some...that i'm still workin on.

Anyone else a metalhead?
if you like pantera, you'd probably like texas hippie coalition. they used to be house band at vinne paul's clubhouse. i first got turned on to pantera back when vulgar display was a new record. my buddies brought it around and i thought it was noise. it took me a couple of listens before i understood what they were doing, and i was hooked from then on. before that it was judas priest, iron maiden, and there was nothing else. pantera was a turning point for me. i don't ask this to be rude, but rather because i'm curious: if you don't like metal, what brought you in here? it's not like the tread title was ambiguous. as an aside, i like some country too, but nothing past the 90's. i think pam tillis is the most beautiful woman God ever created. she's the only woman on earth that could draw me out of bachelorhood. but reba could make me think long and hard about it. she's a close second. i'm not much of a rap guy, although i can appreciate some of the real early stuff. my son was a fledgling rapper, he used to hang out with icp, and he was a warm up for m&m once, many years ago. i tried to raise him right. i blame his mother

Casting Form
if you wanna know about casting, there's one guy you need to study before you take one more step. learn what he's doing, and then there will be no other steps. his name is toshinari namiki, and he's the hank aaron of casting: (i would have said barry bonds instead, but someone would have mentioned the steroids, which don't affect hand/eye coordination)

It Was Raining and There Were No Kids at the Water Park
trust me, they aren't nearly as much fun as they tell you in the brochure... i remember the song that was playing when my first son was conceived. i'll spare you all the details on that one. it's pretty funny though, looking back on it. i tried to raise him properly right off the bat. when i brought him home from the hospital, we played most of judas priest's "screaming for vengance" album in the car, for the ride home. then, while introducing him to the in laws, ozzy's "diary of a madman" album hearing fleetwood mac's "you can go your own way" makes me remember boy scout initiation. i managed to sneak in the soundtrack to crouching tiger/hidden dragon during my reception for marriage #2. listening to black sabbath always makes me think of h.p. lovecraft, because the first time i read the cthulu stories, sabbath was on heavy rotation in my room

Cheaters
that's fraud, and they deserve jail. maybe i'm the only one who thinks this way, but the next step after cheating in a fishing tournament is punching someone's gramma or eating a baby. they should be denied a fishing licence for life

Random useless facts
the filters on this forum are ridiculous and out of hand. in the above post, i used the clinical word for how babies are made, in reference to a cartoon dog, and it has to wait for approval. just who do you people think is reading this forum? even if there was a child under 12 here, which i highly doubt, i said nothing in my post that would be off color. these days censoring the 3 letter word i used above is a bit over the top

What time do you go to bed?
i haven't slept more than 5 hours in a row since 2003, except for times when i was sick. when i was young, i used to LOVE to sleep in on saturdays, especially if i had someone cuddly beside me. i miss that. on the rare occasions i let one of the dogs into my bed on cold nights, i drag them out of bed in the morning, not the other way around. these days, even if i'm still tired, after 5 hours, i'm awake, like it or not. it's like a light switch. but i do enjoy a nap when i get home from work, usually an hour. all i have to do is sit down in this chair, and i'm out - period. if i stay moving, i stay awake. sit down, and i'm out.

my dogs will bark laying down, but just one bark, then they grumble, and wander around acting disgruntled. they're big complainers

Anyone else a metalhead?
i've seen them 6 times, the first in 83, the last in 2016 (i think, or right around then) i used to play kk's parts in a priest tribute band. i copied his stage outfit from british steel, had the white vee, the whole 9 yards. at one time i could play any priest song note for note, from their first album, all the way to ram it down, and about half of painkiller. i don't remember most of that now, i haven't played their catalog in a looong time. man, those were fun times. we did other shows, (sabbath and ac/dc) and original stuff too, depending on the gig. we were popular, and had a chance to go big, but God stopped me in the nick of time, the night we were to sign the contract. i was lucky, because i would not have survived it. by coincidence, my previous tenant was the singer from that band, my current tenant is the other guitar player.

Anyone else a metalhead?
i'm kind of all over the place with this. i like traditional stuff, sabbath, purple, priest, maiden, etc. but i like the 80's stuff alot too, ratt, accept, Y&T, queensryche, dokken, loudness... i also like stoner/doom stuff: monster magnet, clutch, red fang, king weed, thunderhawk... but just as likely to also play things that don't fit in, like thundermother, hardbone, band maid, babymetal, texas hippie coalition... however, i play some stuff that's not even rock. a little country but it can't be newer than the 90's. i like swing/big band stuff like benny goodman or glenn miller, lots of delta and swamp blues, or even truly weird stuff (according to most folks i know) like yoshida brothers, or 12 girls band, or random tsugaru shamisen or music with kodo, shakuhachi, piri, koto, erhu, gayaguem or geomungo

Craziest fish catch stories.
one is not a bass story, so i hope you'll forgive me... mukashi, mukashi... i was fishing the brandwine river one night after work. it was right about this time of year, only we had been having a drought, and the water was pretty low. i found a spot that was holding some good bass that year, that didn't normally. this particular night, i was fishing a black colorado blade in a slack pool on the other side of the creek. i was standing on a rock that wasn't normally exposed. when the lure left the pool, the current would drive it to the top, and i'd quickly reel it in skipping across the surface. one cast, as the lure rose in the current, a big black shape rose up behind it, but then disappeared. i tried it a few more times, nothing. then after another attempt, she appeared, engulfed my spinnerbait, and took a dive. i fought that bass for all i was worth. when she at last had nothing left, i held a smallmouth that was probably 6+ lbs. i turned to take it back to the car where i had a 5 gallon bucket i would fill with water and drive to a tackle shop owned by a guy i knew would answer the door. then i slipped, fell backwards into the creek. rod went one way, bass went the other. never saw either one of them again. that was 88 or 89. had i been able to weigh that bass, it likely would still stand as our state record. that same summer, i was about a mile downstream, at a little beach that i knew had a few good bass. it was getting dark, and i was getting eaten alive by mosquitos, so i decided, one more cast, then i'll go home. except, it was one more cast, then i'll go home about 35 times, until it was so dark i could barely see. barely, but still could, some. a huge black shape followed my texas rig worm out of the shadows into about 12" of water. i resisted the urge to crap my pants (it was absolutely massive) and did the figure-8 thing they say you're sposed to do when you get followed in like that. but it just sat there, and then slowly swam away. i cast a few more times, got another follow, but no taking it. then when i cast one more time, when i hopped it in from the shadows again, it wasn't there, so i decided to actually go home. i pulled the worm out of the water, and there was a sudden explosion. a 4' musky jumped out of the water, bit the end of my rod off, and swam away.

swimbait problems
i am going to try this first, and see how it goes

swimbait problems
i could step up to the next bigger hook, but then the weight gets bigger too, and the water is too shallow for more weight. to my eye this hook size should be adequate. the bait is VERY soft, and the belly slit is a pocket that goes all the way through to the spine. also a bigger hook would not solve the problem of the hook coming out when i cast it. i'm pretty sure it's something i'm doing wrong, because that is the hook size recommended by the manufacturer, and i don't hear of anyone else having these problems

swimbait problems
so, i bought these swimbaits... 13 fishing bamf shad and the golden shiner ones too. they recommend a weighted 6 or 7 owner beast hook. i bought the 6s. the troubles i am having are: the hook won't stay inside the bait. it keeps coming out, and that makes it run funny. how can i correct that? when the hook remains inside the bait, they really move so nice! i had several hard strikes with some big bass (i think they were bass, i didn't see more than a flash) but they don't stay on the hook for more than 30 seconds or so. i am setting the hook, they are sharp. what am i doing wrong?

Craziest fish catch stories.
when my son (now 36) was about 4 or 5 yrs old, i took him camping one weekend, just me and him. we set up camp fri nite when i got home from work, at a sleepy little campground in maryland. saturday morning we awoke to a steady rain. the kind where you can tell it's going to do that all day long. my boy said to me "let's go home, i don't want to stay in the tent all day". i said buddy, we didn't come down here to sit in the tent, we're going fishin rain or shine. he replied "mom will get mad when i get wet and muddy". i told him, mom ain't here, so no one is gonna yell at you for anything for the next 2 days. we walked down to the lake about 8 o clock, after a breakfast of pop tarts and chocolate milk. when we got there, some old man was drowning some minnows. i asked him if he was catching any, and he said not one bite. we walked past by about 50'. i flicked a white spinner bait out there. it was immediately hammered by a 3 lber. the old guy gave me a nod. very next cast, i hooked a bigger one, about 4 lbs. for the next 20 minutes, i caught a fish every single cast, the 3 lb one was the smallest of them. several over 5 lbs. after the first couple, i let the boy reel in the rest, we had a blast. the old guy seemed pretty ticked off, going by the look he gave us on the way back. we didn't catch another fish the entire weekend, after that, but we didn't care. i've been back there several times since then, and i never caught another fish there. but for 20 minutes, it was legendary.

Judging casting or target distance
i've been staring at a tape measure for 8-10 hrs/day for 37 years. when i say something is 60' away, i'm within a few inches. but that's not important, aside from being able to communicate distance when talking to someone else. i don't really think about the distance consciously. i'm pretty accurate at about 50'. but i can go out to 70' and be confident - to a point. as mentioned by others, lures fly different depending on what they are. the last 10' of a cast the lure is slowing super fast, and spinnerbaits will sometimes almost stop dead, or hook right or left some. there's wind to consider as well. somehow i can do the mental math without using alot of brainpower, and hit the target area pretty well. when i was young, and fishing every single day, i could put a spinnerbait in a coffee can 7/10 times at about 60'. i could throw a curve and a slider, and skipping was easy. i don't fish enough to do that now. i never could cast well with a spinning rod. but with a casting reel, i have waaayyyy more control. thumb is everything (to me)
