  1. the trouble is, if you stop spending money on fishing gear, something in your house or vehicle will break. the money will find a way out. it always does.
  2. one of the things that seems to get ignored alot is, people don't all have the same goals when they go out fishing. i don't catch as many fish as i could, but that's deliberate. i could easily catch more bass than i do. but i don't want more bass. i want big ones. i want the biggest ones in the water i'm fishing. if i don't catch anything at all, i'm ok with that. i'm not interested in being the master of medium sized bass. where i mainly fish, big ones are rare. but sometimes, the gods of fishing smile on me, and i catch them.
  3. i like braid, but you really have to pay attention to nicks and abrasion when using it, seems like more than flouro at least for me. also knots.
  4. wow, am i glad i read this thread! for a couple years now, i have tried like hell to catch a fish on a glide bait, and it's not working out. the ganterel jr i have looks to my eye like a live sunny. apparently, the bass here disagree. i haven't had a single bite on it yet. the whopper plopper. everyone and their brother throws them around here and claim they are the best thing ever. i get lots of strikes, haven't hooked a single bass on one. i do real well with a buzzbait though. one thing different for me is the chatterbait. i really like them. i throw mostly spinnerbaits anyhow, so that may have something to do with it. i find that if i don't put a trailer on them, they don't produce for me. but if i put a craw or a bandito bug on one, i know i'm gonna catch something. oddly enough, spinnerbaits work the opposite way for me.
  5. i have to agree. i NEED fries
  6. good luck, i hope it goes well. or, at least as well as something like that could go
  7. i read of a guy who had one 25 mm but they broke it into 5mm chunks with ultrasound or something. i cant imagine passing 5 stones in a row. holy frickin cow!
  8. i passed my first one ever, a couple months ago, and then another a few weeks after that. i can confirm, the pain is horrible. i lost my small intestine to gangrene 20 years ago, and a 5 mm stone was (for me) equally painful. i have heard of people passing them up to 17 mm. if i had to pass one that big, i'd have to ask someone to take my gun away from me until i passed the stone.
  9. i feel bad for those folks who said subway and wawa. they don't have any idea what a good sandwich is. i live in wilmington. as late as 20 years ago we still had alot of mom & pop places to get a good sub or cheez steak. now, there are dam few left. i'll eat from a gas station before i EVER set foot in a subway. we still have a few places left, and i hope they don't go away before my dying day comes, somewhere in the future. the ONLY chain i'll buy a sub from is cappriotti's. i often avoid them even still, because they don't make fries, and their cheez steaks are over priced and light on meat. when i want a good sub or steak, i go to goodfellas in prices corner, or tony & dom's on 41 just off of 2. cassapula's makes a good sub, and their steaks are ok but they use provolone, and they don't chop the meat. they are also excruciatingly slow, and they don't make fries. goodfellas and dom's make great meatball sandwiches too. deerhead hot dog on maryland ave make good sandwiches, the beach fries are consistently awesome, and they make good shakes with real ice cream. the places i miss most are maryland ave sub shop - they're under new ownership. the owners retired and sold out. they're ok, but no more steak fries, and the subs aren't as good anymore. that makes going to the sketchy part of town no longer worth it for me. alpha pizza - they made great food, the owner was a friend, i also worked there as a second job when i was an apprentice. he gave me my first car. when he retired, his daughters refused to continue the business. 3 stars in elsmere - they made great food, but went out of business 20 years ago. i ran into the son, randomly about a year ago. he actually remembered me, and what i used to order. i was blown away. deconstanza's - i loved getting the travel sub when we had family parties. mr. subs pizza hub - they used to be on s. market below town, and for $7 you could get a meatball sandwich that was as big as your arm. there used to be a place in wilmington on 7th & walnut, i forget their name now, but they made gargantuan cheez steaks for a good price. when i was young, i worked 2 jobs most of the time. sheetmetal during the day, and delivering sandwiches and pizza at night. i worked for alot of different shops, and so did my first wife. we take sandwiches and pizza pretty seriously around here.
  10. i just remembered my buddy got a $250 fine that morning for not having life jackets on the boat. when he pointed out that the entire pond had a max depth of 3' or less, the fish and game guy acknowledged it was unnecessary, but wrote the ticket anyway.
  11. a buddy of mine had a little 10' boat he used to throw in the back of the truck so we could fish a couple of private ponds he had access to. we were out there one morning and he foul hooked a massive carp. in the boat is 2 men and a coleman cooler full of ice with drinks and bait. that's over 400lbs in the boat. that carp pulled us all the way across that pond, probably a few hundred feet
  12. like some others, i can cast either hand, but i prefer casting and cranking with the right hand with baitcasters, and cranking left hand with spinning rods. for whatever reason, i like a casting rod to be in my left hand for the retrieve, and spinning rods to be right hand during the retrieve. not that i can recall. i've been doing it so long, i don't even think about it, i just do it.
  13. no love for "big fish"? my son called me "edward bloom" for years after seeing that movie. "how does the biggest fish in the river get so big?" by not getting caught
  14. i can't help being a smartass. the place i go to sees alot of fishermen, and the fishing there is usually pretty tough. when people ask me how i did, i almost always tell them i caught the hell out of them, and most bigger than average. sometimes i even claim to have hooked a real big one that got off. i figure that way, they'll wonder what i was doing that they aren't, and they'll think i have a secret. ?
  15. i love what fishing does for me. wishing other people to not have that seems selfish
  16. i'm probably immature, but i actually lol'd when i saw this
  17. "the bottom" is kinda subjective. speaking strictly for me, i had to save a long time for my first garcia reel, and i was a one rod wonder for ages. before that i fished with a mitchell 300 i found half buried in mud on a trail. i put a new bail on it, cleaned it up and lubed it, and it was all i had for a long, long time. back then i didn't even own a tackle box. i kept a handful of lures, soft plastics and terminal tackle in a grocery bag i tied to my belt loop. i hinted at this in my earlier post. i agree with you, the dc is nice but not as impressive as i wanted it to be. lots of youtubers claim that you can adjust it to cast with no thumb. however, you never see them try that with a big ol' spinnerbait with giant willow blades. every single one who makes that claim throws a square bill. that's not an accident. the dc is useful for throwing spinnerbaits, especially on windy days, but if you rely on it, it's gonna bite you. thumb is everything. you made a good point, i think.
  18. people can say what they want, but i liked the 5' pistol grip and garcia 5000 combo. it served me well for at least 15 years. no one makes the 5' pistol grip rod anymore, or i'd still use one for certain things.
  19. as a bank fisherman i don't need alot of rods. i only have 3 rigs. a lews mach2 that i use for a "knock about" rod that rides in my trunk, a curado dc, and a jdm daiwa sv lite ltd. the mach 2 is inexpensive, and it's put up with far more abuse than i have any right to expect. the curado dc is nice, i like it, but i don't find it as impressive as some do. the daiwa, i absolutely love, because it's my first bfs rig and it works great. there is one thing about all 3 that i absolutely hate, i doubt most will agree with me. when a fish starts peeling drag, they're all silent. i want to hear something when a fish is pulling drag. it's just a personal preference, i get by fine without it, but i'd rather have it.
  20. i would fish the living daylights out of that spinnerbait. at the places i go, i'm sure it would be a good producer
  21. if you've never seen the thing he does when he talks about his coke addiction, you should look for it on youtube. it's hilarious! i've never been into that stuff, but i knew some folks who did. i was familiar with some of the ridiculous things drug users do, but busey's stories are next level funny. the part where he mentions his dog had me laughing so hard i couldn't breathe
  22. my dad used to fly fish for bass. when he died, i inherited his gear. all high end stuff. he tied his own flies, and was good at it. TONS of flies of every kind. my little brother wanted that stuff but he isn't as into fishing as i was. i told him i was keeping it, but he could use it too. i went to the library to learn about fly fishing. (no internet back then) after doing alot of reading, i went to a private pond i had access to, so i could apply what i learned. i tied on a bumble bee lure, and tried to learn to cast. i was doin ok, and actually caught a small bass. then i hooked myself right in the ear. i gave all the fly fishing gear to my little brother the next day. ?
  23. this ^^^ i have a buddy, who when no one is catching anything, will tie on a neon pink worm and wacky rig it. he slays with it every time. i've never seen it not produce. since then i bought some too, but haven't had the chance to use them yet.
