  1. In my years of fishing I use a side arm cast 90% of the time. Probably because I typically fish fairly narrow rivers and from a kayak. It’s the natural way I started casting as a kid and seemed the easiest. I imagine learning to cast as an adult is a completely different experience I did that once. Sent the whole top half of my 2 piece rod flying into the river lol gave the rest of the people fishing their a good laugh.
  2. Veritas is a nice rod and I like mine however there are complaints of them snapping. I have a St. Croix Bass X that I LOVE. I just bought a Dobyn Fury which feels good but I haven’t fished with it yet. Out of all the rods I’ve owned at the 100 dollar mark the St. Croix Bass X is my favorite. A lot of people love the Dobyn Fury rods so I’m looking forward to trying mine.
  3. Thanks for the replies. Surprised no ones using braid. I never liked straight floro on my spinning gear because of the memory but I haven’t tried it on my casting yet. Also only tried 1 brand of floro Don’t recall the brand but it was a cheaper one. I’ll have to try a better brand on my new setup.
  4. What size test do you use for worms?
  5. I am newer to using casting gear. I just started last summer and am really enjoying my casting gear but I have only used it so far for cranks, spinners, topwater, and jigs. I bought a Dobyn Fury 703c casting rod to use for plastics but I’m curious what you guys use for plastics on a bait caster. My other casting rods all have 20lb power pro super 8 slick. I’m mostly gonna be throwing 5” senkos and other worms weightless Texas or wacky rigged. I was gonna put braid on but was told by a friend that braid effects the way a weightless worm sinks so I was considering using mono even though I used braid on my spinning rod for plastics.
  6. Temperature does matter but there’s no magic temp that makes fish bite like mad. Generally Bass don’t feed aggressively in water colder than 50 but that doesn’t mean they automatically do when it’s warmer
  7. When I was a kid maybe 12 years old I was fishing live bluegill as bait and I casted one out and set my rod down to take a drink and my rod took off towards the water. I caught it just in time to reel in one of my biggest bass.
  8. Nah. I own both and hands down like Daiwa reels over shimano. Shimano is my second favorite.
  9. That is a great life quote!
  10. Lightning rod is the best cheap rod I have owned. If your willing to spend 70 bucks and are near a cabelas Fenwick makes excellent rods. And would be quite a bit better than rods at the 50 dollar mark
  11. Hmm I once bought a couple spools of 10lb mono (don’t recall the brand) but I spoiled it up on 3 reels and went fishing and one setup was giving me bird nests almost every cast. That was the only rod with line from the 1 spool so my assumption was it was sitting on the store shelf or a warehouse for a long time and had terrible memory.
  12. I highly recommend spending the extra 25$ to get the fury over the colt if possible. The fury has way more sensitivity imo. I tried a friends colt and fury to see which one I wanted and for 25 bucks I think the fury is a lot better
  13. What kind of line? What kind of spinner? If your using line with a lot of memory and a spinner that’s twisting the line it could wreak havoc
  14. Haven’t owned those rods but I own multiple cabelas rods and they are all good rods with a great warranty. But if your willing to go to 100-110 dollars there’s better ones. I have a st. Croix Bass X which I love and am picking up a Dobyn Fury tomorrow which I’ve heard nothing but great things about. If you want one of the cabelas rods they are solid rods for the money.
  15. Guess it’s just me but I always liked the feel of moderate actions better than fast actions. I have both and haven’t noticed any difference in hook set. Personal preference really
  16. I have no idea. I like to use a fluoro leader just to make myself feel better but I often wondered if it makes much of a difference.
  17. I watched a show about the ancient Mayans and how they built ceremonial things in perfect relation with stars and constellations. We may have a lot more technology now but don’t underestimate the knowledge of past generations ? they were a lot smarter than we think.
  18. Actually after another look Dobyn fury does have a 7’3 heavy model for senkos. Might be perfect
  19. Do you think a heavy dobyn will cast a Senko? According to their website the rods they have intended for senkos listed are med and med/heavy or how confident would you be fishing Dobyns med/heavy around cover
  20. Well it’s simple for me. I just can’t afford to spend that kind of money on a lure. Especially when a lot of my fishing is done in a rather treacherous river for lures. I lost 5 lures in 3 hours already. Can’t imagine losing one that cost hundreds of dollars
  21. So I’m looking to get another casting rod and I think I have it narrowed down to either a Dobyn Fury that I’ve heard good things about or the lews tp-1 which I’ve also heard good things about. Has anyone tried the lews with that guide system? And I’m looking for something strong enough to pull a bass out of weeds but I wanna be able to throw Senkos with it. I looked at the heavy models but I don’t how well they will throw plastics.
  22. It can happen with any lure. I wouldn’t let it discourage you from trying topwater again.
  23. That’s not where the fish are. It’s a river below a waterfall where it’s solid rock and They sit by a ridge in about 4 ft of water and follow the lure up to a shallow ridge about 8 ft from shore that’s just a little stone ridge that goes from 1ft to maybe 8 inches deep and they hammer it right before it hits the shallow point.
  24. For palming I would say get the Tatula ct. it’s a little smaller than the regular Tatula. They are great reels. Whichever one you get you won’t be disappointed.
  25. Honestly where I live a lure that catches bass catches them spring, summer, and fall. The only real discrepancy I’ve seen is the topwater bite that is almost non existent in really cold water
