  1. ^ I also do it the same way, although I also add the talon to the mix much like A-Jay, sometimes it’s faster this way than to use a dock, especially if the dock is a distance away. I’m sure this works great, but I wonder how many boats have been seen slowly drifting away as the driver stands on shore watching. Like any other technology, it works great until the day it doesn’t. I don’t think I could rely on my trolling motor only for launching.
  2. I think we’ve all had something similar happen over the years. I’ve caught lots of wee fellas on lures as large or larger than them, I think a lot of the time it’s an aggressive, possibly territorial strike instead of a feeding strike.
  3. I use braid on a few spinning outfits but most of mine are still Berkley 100% fluorocarbon from end to end, I don’t seem to have many problems with it, in pretty much any lb test from 6-20lb ( only use 6-10 on spinning reels).
  4. I’ve done real well over the years with a Berkley powerbait power hawg, and I’m sure the new maxscent hawg would work awesome as well. I know the power thief and maxscent creature hawg have worked well for me also, but I’d class them as more of a beaver style bait.
  5. Haha, I guess it’d work quite well for that. I don’t partake in it myself, but maybe I could rent out some space, help pay off the winter bait monkey. Around my place, I’d have to peg it with a 10lb dumbbell about now.
  6. So most of my weekends this September we’re spent on land rather than in the boat chasing bass, due to construction of a 8’x13’ greenhouse my wife and I built. We’re both pretty green thumbed when it comes to veggies and flowers, and she’s wanted a greenhouse for a while now. After getting a bunch of free windows from a friends house that he had changed, it was the kick in the rump we needed to finally get started and after a blazing hot summer, ( you want a greenhouse to be in the sunniest part of the yard, which is also the hottest place to work in summer), we finally got some cooler weather in September to build it. Here’s the finished product. We’ll, winter has come early and with a vengeance, but we did get some lettuces and assorted greens planted in late sept. Today was a high of -11C and a horrible wind chill, and we have over a foot of snow on the ground, but my wife went out to the greenhouse and took an inside/outside pic. So far, we’re pleased with the results of our build and with any luck we’ll have some fresh salads by Christmas. At the very least, it’s a nice, tropical place I can visit with my lawnchair in the dead of winter and dream of a summer topwater bite ?. Today at 1:00 it was 29C inside!
  7. This is a funny thread, but now I want to go sweep the snow off my truck and head into town for pistachios. Thanks guys ?
  8. Not a bass, but when I used to charter for lake trout and salmon on Georgian Bay about 10-12 years ago, I lost some true giants. Ive had them snap downrigger rods. Some of them you’d set the hook and they wouldn’t even move, just sit there for a few minutes then decide to swim off and you couldn’t do anything but hold on till something popped, usually the line or the lure popping free. I’ve caught lakers up to 40lbs out there and I’m sure there’s fish there that would’ve make that look small.
  9. Sitting in Montana’s waiting for lunch, of course my kid and my wife had to start colouring on the paper table cloth. This took her all of about 2 minutes. This is is what it’s like being married to an artist.
  10. We have over a foot of snow here now and it’s supposed to keep coming next week. I’m giving up on deer hunting for this year, between work and trying to slog through all this snow, I’m just too tired for any more walking. Guess I’ll give in and deal with winterizing the boat this week ?.
  11. The view I had for 8 hours today. When a 200lb whitetail can walk across the water, you know it’s time to start thinking about winterizing the boat ( but not until next week when I’m done hunting). Guess you could call this a major deer crossing. Takes lots of hooves to make that many marks on a rock.
  12. We lost a member of the family today, he passed at 8:10 pm. Although at 8:15 he was brought back from the light by way of chip bag crinkle ?.
  13. Somewhere, at the other end of this track, is what I’m looking for. After 8 hours of trecking through the bush, I did not find the end of it. Oh well, I still have a few days next week to find him.
  14. 2” of snow here last night, with high winds all day. I was gonna chase some whitetails today but decided to do some stuff around the house instead ( like install snow tires ?). Gonna be in the woods tomorrow though. Our forecast is for snow and below freezing all week here, between working and deer hunting next week, I’m still gonna wait and see what the long range forecast is looking like after next weekend, but it’s looking more and more like I’m gonna be putting my boat to bed as well. Usually my boat’s not put away until December, as the bass and pike fishing can be really good right up till freeze up, but I’m not a fan of trailering in snow so we’ll see what happens.
  15. That’s funny because my wife would absolutely love that particular “major award”.
  16. In my neck of the woods, that’s just called a “Parry Sound dinner jacket”. You don’t go far around here in the cool seasons without seeing a few of them on people of any age.
  17. I’m wondering if he’s got a few more wins to go now that some of the bigger guns have left the elites, should be an interesting year to see who can maybe rise to the top a little more than they’ve been able to the last few years. Also, maybe a bit biased but I’m rooting for Gussy and the Johnston boys to give em heck this year too. ??
  18. I’ve used both kinds of transom savers over the years, and currently have a My-Wedge for my Suzuki 140, and it works great. Motor is very secure and doesn’t move side to side either, even without the steering clips. And yes, if you have bad knees you don’t have to bend down at all with it, unless of course you drop it on the ground ?
  19. I’ve had really good luck with Berkley 100% fluorocarbon in multiple lb tests, both on spinning and casting rods. Little tip for ya, get some kvd line and lure conditioner, it definitely helps.
  20. Being a month away from my 39th birthday, and self employed, I know I’m not retiring any time soon. But I will say, as the fourth generation in my family to work in this business ( stonemason), I do enjoy my work ( most days anyway). I’ve actually worked on some properties where my dad, grandfather, and great grandfather have all worked, something that not a lot of people can say. My dad ran his own business until he was 62, then retired after some back and heart issues. He’s been very active, healthy and happy ever since and no plans to slow down with his enjoyment of retiring. He didn’t have much in the way of retirement savings but he and my mom are doing well and happy as ever. I don't plan to work until I can’t physically do it any more, so I’ve been saving and investing some for a while now. My wife has a decent job with our school board and will have a pretty good pension at a fairly early age so I’d like to “shut er down” around the same time as her, so we can enjoy some good years as a healthy ( hopefully), couple. I’d say to anyone, no matter what your age is to start saving. It’s not too late to start saving. Every little bit helps, and it all adds up. If you’ve worked hard most of your adult life, you should deserve to enjoy some good years later without having to sacrifice how you live.
  21. I’m with A-Jay, never had great luck with Fireline but I have a couple spinning rods rigged up with 832 in 20lb test with a fluoro leader that I use mainly for smaller jerkbaits and I’ve never had a problem as far as loops. I think some of the problems are associated with not so great reels as well. Some cheaper reels just cause nothing but trouble, no matter what kind of line is on them.
  22. My brother is having a party at his place for his girlfriends birthday, he did some carving for the festivities. I expect a few of them may look like this at some point this evening ?
  23. Years ago I lost one on a hookset while jigging for lake trout in 80’ of water. Luckily the trout didn’t stay hooked and I was able to stay right over it with the trolling motor and watch it sink slowly on the graph. I grabbed another rod with a heavy spoon attached and was able to quickly drop it down and snag the sinking rod, which by this time had made it to about 70’. Still have that spinning rod, and it still gets a fair bit of use.
  24. I’ve been a big fan of Berkley 100% Fluorocarbon for a while now, I use 6 and 8lb on some spinning rods and 12-20lb on some of my baitcasters and its held up well and casts well too.
  25. Apparently this, is the couch to be on for a good afternoon nap ?.
