Help me match up my rods & reels...
You're good to go! I suggest a fast reel for your 6 1/2 MH/F. 8-)

Nice fish, great pic! BTW, I think the smallie might be closer to 3 lbs. 8-)

Would you do it?
Well, that's a lot of money and you don't have to spend it! One opportunity probably leads to another and I suspect you will be offered another high pay position that is somewhat safer down the road (e.g. oil pipeline security in Kuwait). I don't have a "recommendation", you have been there and I have not. However, getting paid big bucks for the same service you gave your country for little pay seems like "payback" to me. The prospect of making this a career appeals to some, but it still boils down to you and your wife. Good luck with whatever you choose. 8-)

Favorite rod length/power/action for hard jerkbaits?
St. Croix Avid AVC66MF. This rod is firm enough to work topwater lures and jerkbaits precisely, but has a soft tip to absorb shock and surge. This is an important advantage when fishing treble hooks. 8-)

Best Rod for under $200
Take a look at the St. Croix Avid AVC68MXF baitcaster or AVS68MXF spinning rod. 8-)

whats more important? a good reel or a good rod?

Off with her head!
Geez... I know this is "news", but we REALLY don't need this kinda stuff on a bass forum. This thread is closed. -Kent a.k.a. roadwarrior Global moderator

Pond Lures
Well now, you can keep it simple: Your favorite topwater lures are fine early and late, like anywhere else. Otherwise: Jig & Pig (your favorite colors and trailers) GYCB Senko GYCB Fat Ika If you like spinnerbaits, they can generally be fished "safely" in a pond, too. Just stay clear of subsurface treble hooks if you value your tackle. When fishing from shore, be prepared to lose whatever you fish. 8-)

Theories on Moon Effects on Bass.
We have a number of members that belong to the "Noon O'Clock Club", including me! 10-2 is the broader range, but might require a little adjustment for daylight savings time... One theory is Maximum Light Penetration. Light stimulates plankton growth which may cause more baitfish activity and lead to greater predation at the top of the food chain. At any rate, "noonish" is big bass time! 8-)

Need help? When to use them, flukes, worms, creature baits???
There are no rules! This is my suggestion: "Moving" baits early, finesse later. Slug-Go (flukes) seem to work best when bass are working baitfish on the surface. To get a jump start and catch a few fish quickly, it's hard to beat a Senko or Fat Ika. 8-)

I saw multiple 6 or 7 lber's What to use on a creek or river dam?
Start with the GYCB Grubs and Swimming Senko, but you will also want to pick up some 3 1/2" tubes to fish with 1/8 oz inserted jig heads. 8-)

Big Bass in little pond?
The issue with little ponds is that they dry up occasionally. If you don't know anything about them, they are probably not worth fishing. 8-)
