small mouth lures?
For specific recommendations, review the first twenty pages or so in the "Smallmouth" section of the Forum. I don't recall responses dealing specifically with the James River, but there are probably some there. Otherwise, every lure anyone uses for smallmouth fishing is mentioned on several threads in the other section. 8-)

Lucky Craft Pointer 100 Colors
If I only had one it would be MS American Shad. However, I'm a big fan of green "everything!" I usually fish the Baby Bass color. Regarding switching out the hooks: NO! VMC Hooks are among the very best. 8-)

Single or Double Blade Buzzbaits?
I have a Rattle Head which I really need to fish, but haven't yet. That said, the Cavitron is the most unique buzzbait I have ever used. I highly recommend the lure, especially 3/8 oz black on black! 8-)

Baitcast problem. Line breaking while casting.
I suspect the line is breaking at weak spots that are created by backlash. They appear as kinks in the line. All line with these spots need to be cut and thrown away. 8-)

Rain gear
Cabela's Guideware is THE BOMB! I have the uninsulated package which, with long johns and layering, is good to go 30-65 degrees. You can depend on this rain gear to be 100% waterproof and will last for years, maybe decades! http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/common/search/search-results1.jsp?_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&hasJS=true&_D%3AhasJS=+&%2Fcabelas%2Fcommerce%2FCabelasCatalogNumberFinder.giftCertificateURL=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Ftemplates%2Fgiftcertificate%2Fgiftcertificate.jsp%3Fid%3D0005586990011a%26podId%3D0005586%26catalogCode%3DIB%26navAction%3Djump%26indexId%3D&_D%3A%2Fcabelas%2Fcommerce%2FCabelasCatalogNumberFinder.giftCertificateURL=+&sort=all&QueryText=guide+wear&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jsp.form23&Go.x=17&Go.y=8 8-)

Why 10 - 2?
Discovering 10 -2 was more coincidence than science for me. When my family moved to Memphis is 1997 my daughter found a stable in the country for her riding lessons. I noticed a pond in the back section of the property and asked the owner if it was stocked with bass and for permission to fish. He responded, "Sure, but I don't know if there are any fish, I don't fish and it's never been fished since I owned the land which has been ten years or so." BINGO! Anyhow, my daughter's lesson just happened to be either side of noon so that's when I fished. Over the next several years I caught a lot of big fish and five 10+ on this pond. I also started fishing 10-2 on other water. BTW, The smallmouth in my avatar were caught at approximately 11:30 AM and 1:00 PM. 8-)

hybrid question
Regardless of the brand, all copolymer, monofilament or fluorocarbon line needs a little spit to reduce friction when you tighten down a knot. This applies for all knots, not just the Palomar. 8-)

Short Squeeze In Oil Contracts!
One month, but foward contracts trade constantly...Dec., Jan., etc. The "quoted contract" is the current contract which is a proxy for the actual price of delivered oil. A large part of today's squeeze is thought to be that many holding long positions wanted the oil delivered!
