Call me a weirdo then. I've never palmed my BC. My hand grips the rod behind the reel, forefinger in front of the trigger. This evolved from the way I hold my spinners - forefinger in front of the support arm, rest of the hand gripping the rod behind it. I've fished this way for almost 50 years with spinners, half that for BCs...never had a problem casting, hooking, retrieving, whatever.

It's been almost a year since I posted my arsenal...since there's been a change, an addition and a removal I think I'll post again. Maybe after I order a new rod for the UL rig...the 5' Ugly Stick was too short using out of my canoe last year and I've scrounged enough to replace it.

Knowing the exact reel would help. For example, my Trion-30 is 'max rated' at 130 yds of 8# mono...last year I put 12# Flouro on it. With the calculator located at https://www.pattayafishing.net/fishing-reel-line-capacity-estimator/ I figured I could put 77 yds of that on the spool. Since the max drag of the Trion is 9lbs, but I set it to around 4lbs, this worked fine as I can't cast a lure 77 yds. Far as I've experienced, you CAN use line heavier than the 'recommended', it's just not that common.

Oh I know there's individual THREADS - he's talking individual TOPICS - so Michigan would have it's own topic instead of being included in the Northeast topic. That would expand the 'Fishing Locations' sub from 5 topics to 60+. I don't think Glenn and the Mods would want that major expansion.

I think Glenn and the Mods would balk at that - because then every other state would want their own page and we have people here from overseas - I know I've seen someone from the UK post here - so pages for individual countries too.

I remember going to watch the weigh-in from the 1996 Bassmaster Top 100 tournament that was held on Lake Minnetonka. All the bass just swam away, seemingly in good health, after they were weighed and dumped back into the lake. Even back then, the pros appeared to have taken good care of the fish they'd caught.

At least in northern states, that's because of the 'spring turnover'. The fall one is well known...surface water cools to it's maximum density of 39-degrees and rapidly sinks, causing an upwelling from the bottom. In the spring, the cold water at the surface warms back up to 39-degrees and sinks through the middle layer to mix with the other 39-degree water already at the bottom...this causes an upwelling as well, but not as severe as the fall one. Things I remember from my limnology classes 40 years ago. Diving some of the wrecks around Isle Royale, Lake Superior.

I'm aware of the fisheries reports - use them to determine what lake to fish for what. As I said earlier - only part of 'tonka I fish now-days is Phelps Bay, never once caught a smallie there. I did own a powerboat for a number of years - 14' runabout with a 40hp - but stuck to the areas around Phelps Island - Phelps Bay, Spring Park Bay, Seton Lake, Black Lake, Emerald Lake and Cooks Bay as well as around Wawatosa Island. Not one smallie caught from '88 (when I bought the boat) to '03 (when I sold it).

Thanks for that opinion - and I'd never use braid for a finesse technique...mainly because it seems like overkill.

Finger strength too. I rock-climbed when I was younger and it drove people nuts when I did pull-ups using the narrow ledge of a door-jamb.

I'll do that - since my DS rig is the Avocet, something that behaves on Spinning gear is better.

Given my budgetary restraints - would Red Label be good enough?

Since I haven't spooled my reels for this season yet, you think it's a good idea to get the FC instead of spooling Mono? I'm not planning on DSing deep - probably 15' or less, and most of my tosses will be away from the canoe instead of straight down.

Question I have @Glenn, is FC better for a DS rig than the Mono I've been using? Definitive proof or just personal preference.
