  1. I prefer to slow it down. But I also don’t usually fish reels that bring in more than 36” a crank.
  2. $1.00 children’s safety scissors. They will never fail you. And if they do, buy a new pair for $1.00.
  3. The problem is always the egg sinker. They are useless. The way I’d recommend doing a C-Rig on rocks is use a bullet sinker, much lighter than a half ounce. Then, use some sort of soft plastic that flutters or that is buoyant (preferably with added weight to make up for the egg sinker you were using). Then keep it moving fast enough to skim over the tops of the rocks. Or if that fails, use split shots in place of the bullet weight. Otherwise, use a T-Rig with something buoyant or fluttery to skim over the tops of the rocks. It also might sound silly, but a lower density weight helps a lot in this situation. Dense small weights sink faster. Bigger weights with less density are naturally buoyant when dragged through the water.
  4. If you’re serious about fishing, you should be able to avoid killing fish you intend to release. I hate when someone asks fo a hand with a gut hooked fish because they want the rusted dull hook that is as sharp as the hook on a shirt hangar back. I do what I can to not injure fish. I hate to kill fish by hooking them halfway through their intestines.
  5. Just get covered up. I had about a dozen precancerous moles removed over the last year. Especially if you have kids, make them wear long sleeves and pants, plus sunblock anywhere exposed. Sunglasses are also important. A lot of fishermen go night blind from not wearing sunglasses.
  6. Very easy. Fish are getting fished out of every ocean all over the world.
  7. It is magnesium. As with other magnesium reels, it is quiet and has a plastic like dampening property to it. I wouldn’t even know what a hollow feel is, other than it is light relative to other metals. For example, the MGXtreme2 I was fishing last weekend is light, has that natural dampening of magnesium and is super quiet. Some people equate heavy metal with quality even when they’re not talking music.
  8. There is no safe way to respond to these statements.
  9. I have to say use no less than 10lb test. I say that because when I caught my PB, on what looked to be at least 20lb test, I missed a few other monsters because they literally broke my line by inhaling the bait. I swear, I was sure it was an alligator biting my line off so quick the rod didn’t even bend.
  10. I’d recommend just buying a new reel. Old reels are more about nostalgia than anything else. Unless you are fishing heavy. There are lots of good options in older reels for heavy fishing. For anything other than the heaviest bass setups, newer is probably better.
  11. I prefer magnesium. It’s smoother and quieter than other materials. It definitely absorbs vibration. But since it is only in better reels, they probably vibrate less to begin with. As a metal, it is known for absorbing vibration, Even the cheap Omoto Cerveza reel I use that is magnesium absorbs vibrations like plastic, but fishes like metal. https://luxferga.com/wrought-magnesium-plate-for-vibration-testing/ That’s all well and good, but I see why some don’t like it. It’s basically the opposite of the super rigid high modulus graphite a lot of people prefer in their rods for “sensitivity.” It’s ok for me, I’m sensitive enough without it.
  12. Yes. I go as far as 100m spools of fluoro. And the big 1500 yard spools. I shop around, but stick to real sellers. There’s too much fake stuff out there.
  13. I have never done well matching the hatch. Try different things. It could also be that I have little luck matching the hatch, because the hatch is really something I don’t know. Which leads me back to try different things.
  14. No tips, other than the only time I ever caught a big bass, was when everyone else would say it was too hot to catch bass.
  15. It’s 2020. I had a relative die of Covid at 59. Another friend died from it at 42. Just found out my old boss from a few years back died, too, not Covid, but he was only 61. On top of that, I just found out my neighbor across the street, who was 101 years old also passed. If anything is going to say cherish anything—it’s 2020.
  16. Long trips with few stops are no problem, until there’s more than one person in the car (or truck).
  17. Finished product. Binge watched BBQ Pit Boys while they cooked. I did a little extra saucing and smoking in Apple, cherry and a little pecan, since I had some that I must’ve ordered late last season.
  18. In honor of the fact that I have to go back to work in person on Monday, I decided to whip up the BBQ Pit Boys Pineapple Whiskey Baby Back Ribs. But I am using Vodka and Maraschino Cherries. We”ll just call this “Northern Strain” Pineapple Baby Back Ribs. I like vodka and maraschino cherries (instead of whiskey and pitted cherries) because, IMO, they bring out the natural sweetness and gameyness of the pork. But sometimes, I’ll make similar recipes using Southern Comfort and Maraschinos. Believe it or not, this is the first time in my life adding garlic to my ribs! After adding my 10 spice rub (with ground ancho & New Mexico dry Chile’s) and a little salt. After getting the sauce. I threw in a Jalapeño for heat. But there’s yucateco habanero sauce in there, too.
  19. Same problem for horse shoe crabs and they survived everything since the beginning of time.
  20. At the price the baby eels are getting right now, they’ll be extinct before you know it.
  21. A few years back, when I had a job where I was constantly on the road, I forgot to bring my sunglasses. I stopped at a rest stop and there was a sunglasses stand where they had UV3 and iDrive glasses. I have been wearing these glasses ever since. They run $89.99 now, but they’re worth it. The problem is that they have a limited selection for different styles. And they change all the styles every few years. Sometimes you can get about $20 off and if you buy a pair, you’ll get a coupon for anything in the future. The amber iDrive glasses are great all around. I’m not affiliated with them in any way, but I’ve been wearing them almost 10 years now. https://www.izonesunglasses.com/idrive-sunglasses.html
  22. I can’t tell the difference by strain. The first decent bass I ever caught was northern. And it was fat like it was a southern bass, but it was dark brown to black, with no green or patterns at all, which is how I always think of northern bass. As far as differences by strain go, it looks to me like in small lakes and ponds, which is where 99% of my fishing has been, the bass become their own strain from lake to lake.
  23. Bummer. I woulda thought the maximum toll was like $6.80.
  24. Nice. Never tried that. I use the showtime “set it and forget it” rotisserie. I plug it in outside when I run it in the summer.
  25. Yes, that is the plan.
