Well I'm sure you've heard the term match the hatch before? Well as a general rule I think that is a good way to go but in my experience when fish are really keying in on a certain type and size of bait that's schooled up like that how can you stand out? One thing I've done when targeting fish blowing up on shad is use typical shad type baits...namely fluke, senko or swim jig...but in a bluegill pattern so it stands out against the backlight of thousands of shad. You hit on something in the second paragraph that really makes sense. This year I tried and tried to target these shad chasers..and yeah I caught a few but mostly beat my head against the wall. So one day I got away from the schoolers and targeted shallow wood..was much more productive.

Everybody's a Tabasco fan...except me! Its got good heat but very little flavor to me. It doesn't taste bad..but it doesn't taste really like anything.

Oh for sure..I wasn't suggesting that at all. I'm kind of that way with bladed jigs...I don't dislike them but would much rather fish a lipless,crank, spinnerbait or swim jig. But I do use them...successfully even. Everything is a tool. I'd rather use a hammer then a screwdriver...but they both have a time and place.

Was gonna say I've seen several posts where you say you don't really like crankbaits...now every video you put on YouTube is you fishing a squarebill.!

What are your go to sauces? Lately I've really liked the Chipotle cholula..little smoky...spicy but not super hot. I also love cheap old trappeys red devil...grew up eating it with my dad.

Anybody use these often? Seems like 3/8 is the standard size and guy go up from that...but rarely hear guys going lighter

I'm the same way often..have to remind myself to pick up crank a it's instead of swim jigs and spinnerbaits. Btw my dad fishes the same lakes I'm assuming you do based on your name and location. He retired in Milford a few years ago...my uncle just retired up there this year and he lives by East lake.

I really appreciate the offer but I don't really like the 2.5 size...plus I'm looking for baits that run slightly shallower that's why I was looking at the LCs. Thank you tho.

This is kind of an interesting look at it. I recently watched a video where 2 guys said bank anglers are better at casting angles and efficiency than boat anglers. They never mentioned bad habits. I fish from a boat a decent amount...all my buddies have them my uncle too...and I had a kayak for a decent amount of time. I'm really considering a kayak as I do enjoy it. Kinda funny that several people have told me that I have enough square bills...didn't know there was a number to reach. Its funny to me only because I've seen guys post on here saying they have hundreds of crankbaits...nobody told them to stop buying!

There is definitely a marketing gimmick to it no doubt. But lets take the Ned rig for example...to me its about quick reference. If you say Ned rig I instantly know its a small stickbait or something similar on a small jighead. Easier to say Ned rig than me saying yeah I caught them on a small mushroom style jighead with a half of a zinkerz on it.

Your state record bass is 8lb 15oz and 23.5 inches long. My personal best is around 8.75lbs. Iowa state record is 10lb 12oz. Crazy to think we live that close and there is that much of a difference. The weather in the southern part of Iowa is considerably warmer than here tho so they may get a longer growing season. The area around where I live isn't known for numbers but it sure does grow some big bass.I've caught 4 bass in the 8lb and up range in 20 years..3 have come from within ten minutes of my house...3 of them have been in the past 6 or 7 years. Also I live on the south Dakota border...there largemouth record was just broken this spring but the previous record which stood for 20 years came from a tiny gravel pit that's literally 3 miles from the Ethanol plant I work at.

Metal flake pulsator is my favorite over the counter spinnerbait I've ever used. Swim straight...kinda compact for a subtle presentation....very durable....quality components.

So just because something is similar its not supposed to get a name? We should change the name of the damiki rig to the hey its the walleye rig thing but with a plastic minnow for bass?

It was certainly a good bass year for me as well. I live in Northwest Iowa so I'm not far behind you for weather which means my year is drawing to a close. Numbers wise for me was probably average or slightly above...size wise was definitely solid. Lots of 3-4 lb fish...half a dozen in the 5 range...3 6s and a 7. I've caught bigger top end fish in the past but for average size this has been a good year.

I went out today and caught a nice 3lber on a frittside crankbait on a nice rocky shoreline then got a crappie on it 2 casts later..then proceeded to blank in that spot for an hour. It was a warm day so I moved across the lake to a shallow cove and caught probably 30 dinks in a couple hours on a weightless worm in a foot or two of water. I tried dropshot and finesse jig around brush...also slow rolled a chatterbait and worked a jerkbait around rock...those 4 produced a whopping 1 fish. I don't get it either.

I've heard this too. But I've also caught a crazy amount of bass from the same small area. A few summers back I got on some bass at my local lake schooling on shad at the mouth of a channel. I caught 27 in less than 2 hours from the same spot. Also have a lake close to my house that I've caught over 100 in the same small cove on a jerk bait in spring.

I honestly only use 2 jerk baits but have tried half a dozen. My two are: rapala shadow rap shallow and Berkley cutter 90 shallow

I've owned 1 true boat in my life and I only had it a few years...most places I fish are small. I now fish out of the cheapest rig there is...my feet on the bank. Have been looking long and hard at a kayak or canoe for several years..that will happen at some point.

So I am new to drop shotting...just something I never did. So I'm gonna be throwing one with a 4.5 inch roboworm on a size 4 gamakatsu stinger hook and had a question. I know to Texas rig one when im around wood or grass but what's the best rigging method for not rigging weedless? I know alot of guys nose hook but I saw a video of Aaron Martens where he said alot of the time he threads the worm up on the hook. Which way do you guys do it?
