Ha..good one

So I'm going out tomorrow to my local lake and its been cold. I'm talking like actual cold...couple single digit mornings and even some ice already. Anyhow I've got a lipless, Ned rig, bitsy bug(homemade version thanks Bluebasser) and a small jerk bait. Ill add that I'm fishing from shore. Am I missing anything? I'd guess the water is in the high 30s.

The way winterkill works the way I understand is once your pond is frozen and you get snow cover on top all the plant life in the pond dies from lack of sunlight. Therefore they are producing no oxygen...and with the pond froze there is no way for wind to push oxygen in. So the fish are then using up a dwindling supply of oxygen until it gets under critical level and the fish die. As far as Ned goes I don't use it all the time but it has become handy for me in the worst conditions...coldest and hottest water temps being those times.

Completely unproductive? No Tougher? Yes Trust me on this..we are from the same area with the same weather and after 20 years of fishing until ice up and immediately after ice out for bass it can be challenging to say the least. I to am a bank angler...which makes it even tougher in my opinion. A few things I've used successfully in those conditions are Ned rig, shaky head, finesse jig with a chunk trailer and smaller jerkbaits. About the only moving bait I can ever get bit on in water that cold is a smaller lipless. I've heard shad rap works that cold but it usually stops working for me in low 40s. One thing I will say is cold water can mean big bass. I caught an 8lb largemouth a couple years back on a jig in November.

So today I made my first foray into assembling some spinner baits. I bought a few pre poured frames, some blades, swivels and some round bend pliers. Decided to attach the end blade with a lock loop. Lets say it went well...ended up with 4 perfect baits and 1 that had to be repaired rebent and tweaked. But hey short arm spinnerbaits are a thing right?

Most of my water is already hard enough to need a punch rig to get thru. Temporary of course since its gonna warm up..but annoying anyway.

Yep I meant booyah. I remember several threads building up hype before they came out...was hoping to hear some follow up from guys that have used them alot.

There was a lot of hype around these when they came out...touted as the resurrection of the old excaliburs that get so much love. Who has used these? How do you like them? Are they as good as the old ones?

Gold black back Cordell spot has been my best lipless for several years...so for me that's standard! Just throw some size 4 triple grips on there and roll. I've heard you mention those two colors several times...next order I'm gonna get 1 of each.

I'm looking to make a few double willow spinner baits and wanted suggestions on blade size. Going to be making some in 3/8th oz.

People over complicate alot of things in fishing...I'm guilty of it myself. 15 years ago I used to throw a 3in bps stick bait on a crappie jighead. It worked remarkably well in cold water. I'm talking Iowa few days before ice up cold. Then I forgot about it...fast forward some years and the Ned rig comes along. And I thought oh yeah ...I remember this.

Honestly when I was your age I spent more time drinking and chasing after girls than fishing. I'm not condoning that behavior just stating a fact. Looking back I wish I woulda fished more..so it sounds like your doing it right. As far as finding time I'd say it can go either way...it can be tough as an adult when work gets hectic if your working 60+ hours a week. But on the other hand as an adult I don't have to ask permission to go or ask for a ride so that helps.

Is it worth the cost for senkos? Depends on what you are trying to accomplish. I use senkos and several knock offs...for my mileage the only bait I've used that had performed even close to the yamamoto was the gambler ace. This is a debate as old as time...seen it on here millions of times. To me in my experience it boils down to what I've seen...are yamamotos expensive? Yes. Are they less durable than alot of others? Absolutely. Do they consistently out perform the other baits? No doubt in my mind. So if your out for a good time just having fun catching a few fish most baits will do. If your serious about catching them whether for fun or money...I'd bring the senkos. Just my observation. This is something I've seen in a ton of YouTube videos and it drives me crazy. I also hate when your watching a jig video and the guy trims his weed guard over the side of the boat into the lake. Its not your lake...you wanna trash something throw crap on the floor of your house.

Exactly....just when you thought you had heard every question possible on here now somebody's asking how to clean gelatinous soup out of a reel. To the OP in all seriousness I think I'd do a teardown, clean and lube job like mentioned above. There are lots of good videos on YouTube showing how to do it.

Seen a bottom bouncer used for walleye trolling being cast from shore with the typical spinner rig but a senko hooked on it. Something that always kills me that I've seen a gazillion times...and I laugh every time...is people holding there spinning reel upside down.

Is this the weather when you shut it down? If so that eliminates half the year for me...couple that with winter which is worse and I'd be screwed.

In my experience high water almost always gets fish moved up to the shoreline. If you still have water coming in fish near wherever its dumping into your pond. Fish seem to stack in and around he current in that situation. Spinner bait or square bill should get bites.

Was out one day last week before our current arctic blast. It was breezy and rainy. Threw a spinnerbait..no dice. Texas rig craw...no sir. Gold black back spot...ain't happening. Tied this bad boy on...4lber first cast.

I looked through my lipless yesterday and I don't think I have any with chartreuse on them. Not sure why.

Jigs...no question.
