  1. I've never used one but my local lake has lots of shad and now thru fall the bass are transitioning to feeding on them. I built one today and threw a white speed craw on the back...Will try it next time I go out.
  2. Well that's why I asked if they are a thing...I didn't ask if they would work. Guess what I was wondering is why you never hear about guys using them. You can stop banging your head.
  3. Are these a thing? I use white swim jigs...but what about a white arky?
  4. Slip shot rig...think small Carolina rig with a cylinder weight. Never seen anybody where I'm from use it. Works well in mid summer hot water.
  5. Jig is an easy bait for them to throw since they have the weight at the end for leverage to help throw it. Fish should be fine.
  6. So we all know as seasons progress there are emerging patterns that excel and then taper off...in the course of the year many baits turn on then off. Over the course of my open water season I will throw jerkbaits, lipless, swim jig, spinnerbait, frog, popper and on and on. But one thing I throw in all 3 open water seasons that regularly gets bit regardless of water temp is a small flipping jig...specifically a BOSS finesse flip or siebert sniper. What bait do you lean on heavily all year?
  7. I once saw a buddy wade neck deep in his boxers to retrieve a white bass wrapped up in a tree with his rapala in its mouth. This was very cold water..I'm talking northwest Iowa in November cold. Looking back it was d**n stupid of him and me for letting him do it...but we were in our early 20s so we were invincible plus a rapala seemed expensive when we made 9 or 10 dollars an hour. Now we make 3 times that and wouldn't even think of doing it. Live and learn.
  8. I don't microfish...on purpose. I do catch fish the would qualify some times.
  9. My local lake is predominantly largies but there is a decent amount of smallies as well. Guess I'm looking at it more as a cold water tool.
  10. I'm looking for that smaller size. For a jig the size of the mini flip I use a siebert sniper or boss finesse flip.
  11. Honestly I bought one for my girlfriend as a starter baitcaster and I've been impressed with it. I've got lots of baitcasters and would say I like it best out of my sub $100 reels. I also own a silver max which is a step up but like the black max better. As for longevity we have had ours for probably 3 years with moderate to average use and it's solid. As for the dialing in I didn't find it hard...but kinda like above I've had lots of baitcaster experience. Got my first one in 96 for my 13th birthday so I've been around the block. Strange enough that reel was an Abu Garcia 5500 which I still have and use for catfish.
  12. The last week I've lost 3 fish on a frog after I replied to a post giving advice on how to hook up on a frog. Today I went out put my head down and threw the frog. Only had 2 blow ups but got both..both around 3.5lbs. Felt like I got some redemption.
  13. So I've seen these around forever and I've heard a lot of good things on here about them but I've never tried one. The smallest jig I usually throw is a sniper or a BOSS mini ball. Am I missing out not having the bitsy bug in my arsenal? How many of you still throw these?
  14. Well looks like I may be getting a fuego soon..thanks for the input
  15. I'm not saying a jackhammer doesn't work...it obviously does. But for me being shore bound makes lure retrieval from snags challenging. So instead of buying a jackhammer at $16 I'll buy two chatterbait customs from Tackle warehouse for $14. Are they a jackhammer? No. But they are a very nice bait and at $7 they don't make you want to throw your rod down and stomp on it when you lose one. Another good option is the siebert outdoors fogy...it has a different hunt action plus you can get tons of skirt colors and you can get it wire tied with a specialty colored blade for around $5. This is another reason I make my own skirts and buy jigheads separate to put them on. By using a BOSS or siebert head and building a skirt I can make a nice jig in the exact color I want for around $2. Id love to use dirty jigs since they make great stuff..but $5 for a jig I'm gonna lose is a tough pill to swallow. That said I've bought siebert jigs before and they are great but same thing...from shore I lose a lot of jigs so why spend that money?
  16. Depending on water depth and other cover besides weeds id probably opt for an arky style jig in the 3/8ths or 1/2oz size. An arky isn't perfect but it's good at everything to an extent. Trailer wise I like to keep it simple for starting out so something with claw action like a rage craw or yum Christie craw is good..for colder water when you want less action a zoom super chunk is a standard. For trailer color you can do lots of things there but again just keep it simple and get colors that match or are complimentary...black and blue jig gets black and blue, sapphire blue or junebug trailers for me. One other suggestion I have is if the water isn't super muddy all the time id also get a jig in a natural color...green pumpkin is the most common and works everywhere in almost all water colors. I also use a straight Brown jig a lot and it works great. Again get a couple style trailers in colors that match or go well with the jig and your set.
  17. Wettest I'm willing to go is up to my waist and that's if I'm dang sure of depth and bottom composition. Even then I'd think hard about even trying a treble hook bait. If the water is even slightly cold...let's say 60 and under...no chance don't care how expensive it is. I said in a prior post about lures you won't throw that id never pay so much for a lure that I wouldn't throw it...that said you gonna throw it gotta be ready to lose it.
  18. I'm currently using an old W&M skeet reese reel I've had for...oh God I don't even know how long. Anyhow I'm looking for suggestions in the $100 range. Id like to keep the gear ratio in the 7 to 8 range as well.
  19. They really are a great finesse rod..heck I even throw small twisters for crappie on mine. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.
  20. Not at all..but id be willing to bet there are craws in there even if you think not. Kinda like how shad colored baits work in places with no shad.
  21. My main Ned rod is a Dobyns Sierra 702 which is a 7ft medium light and I love it. I've got it set up with a Daiwa RG 2500 with 6lb yo zuri hybrid and it works great.
  22. This right here. Fish often times group by size so maybe you found a dink school then moved to a spot with quality fish. Also I agree you probably caught the active fish then the bite window was over.
  23. I don't think Midsommar and Hereditary are the same. Are there similarities sure..same director who has a particular style. But Hereditary has a more ominous tone and it reminds me of movies like The Babadook. Midsommar is also tense and wrought with grief but also has more playful elements like drugs and dancing..a huge homage to the original Wicker Man.
  24. I love speed craws..but the menace is at another level. Especially on a swim jig.
  25. Pretty sure Glenn has his notifications turned off and he just forgot he posted this
