  1. yeah id say im about the same way, I think its what you do most and where you grew up, so for instance, here in Socal I flip thick grass matts and cover ALOT and do that for majority of the time every trip Spring-early/mid fall. So I am very proficient in landing a lure without even a splash from a far distance when flipping. As for distance casting im not that good, and my roll casting/sidearm casting can be worked on to say the least. Id say the other thing I would need to work on is fishing the early spring. I know alot of people do good but I caught more fish in winter than early spring+pre spawn. I just feel the fish are really wierd on my bodies of water and at least in winter they are predictable, you just have to grind them out.
  2. Thankyou so much everyone!!!! yall are going to help me out so much, Heading out tomorrow and am excited to try all these techniques this upcoming week! thanks guys!!!
  3. So I went fly fishing for trout earlier this year, and will be going soon in about a week. I feel have become quite proficient at it after practicing for a few years, but I have found one major wall that I keep hitting and that is, spooky low water trout in creeks, rivers, and calm calm lake waters. So Its not like my body or rod is the thing that scares them but the presentation, what I mean by that is the slapping of the leader onto the water. I am using that general rule of thumb by dividing by 3 or 4 per the size of hook, but maybe should I go up from 4x to 5x if the fish are super spooky even if the fly is a little big/heavy for that diameter? The fish just really seem to not like the leader, and in deeper water or faster moving water its not an issue but for low+slow+gen clear water its been all too noticeable. I just dont know if it would be too hard to cast the fly with a super thin material. any other ideas would be lovley to hear. I have tried different flies as well but it seems they will take most nymphs in the afternoon and most dries in the evenings if its a soft enough presentation. Thanks for everyones time and God Bless!
  4. oh all the time, and Its my biggest demise because i HATE braid, I use it for frogs and stuff dont get me wrong but most the time I just take one medium heavy rod with 12lb copoly and cut and retie on my shorter fishing trips (because im very busy and don't have time to go all day) and Ill throw into the nastiest of stuff and get bit but loose them frequently. Yes I know its a gear issue but for me when im only going to be fishing for an hour or two hauling around multiple rods can be annoying. Dont get me wrong I do it from time to time if I have a frog rod or if im fishing a body of water where I also really need a spinning rod but, for me once I get the fish really dialed in on a body of water I just take one rod and use techniques that worked because they usually carry over for that entire season. I will say though when flipping and pitching NARLY cover and you do have 12lb line and a medium heavy baitcaster, when you do get that fish in its a real treat, and it was an amazing fight!
  5. I get this alot, but try a different species. Many retired pro bass fisherman now fish for crappie, try fly fishing, try catfishing, try getting your kids involved (if you have any) try ultralight, try try try
  6. seeing people having fun catching bass with large lures (compared to my roots of fishing with a bobber and nightcrawler)
  7. well depends what you like more, offshore or bank fishing. Also take the thermocline into account, other than that its your choice. Even if there is no visible structure but you have muck in courners of pockets and coves in your lake just flip into those and you will still get bit. I fish alot of lakes with little cover and there are always shallow fish in the shallow grass. If its clear throw baits accordingly, if its only 35 ft deep on average id focus on mostly shallow water, but dont count out suspending fish out in the middle, find the baitfish, and you will find the fish. you got a fairly good idea of the lake yourself so I think you will be just fine and kill it brother!
  8. yeah same, we got some wierd summer rains in socal and it was FIRE for fishing. overcast, windy, rainy, and topwater/powerfishing ALL day. it was like a comfortable 70 overcast all day, problem is, when it got hot the next day to the standard 95 it was VERY humid and uncomfortable, but how can you complain yknow?
  9. wow thats incredible! what a huge tarpon! nice!
  10. So I have not really wanted to invest in a swimbait rod and reel combo because to be quite frank, I dont have the money. I do have a 4000 sized spinning reel on a rod rated for 1/2 oz to 3 oz, do you think this rod would work fine for smaller swimbaits? I feel like it should, It may not cast as far a baitcasting reel and I wont be able to control the loud splash as much but, Would it work? I also have some bigger conventional reels and conventional rods for light inshore fishing that are rated for the same specs, would these work?
  11. Yeah these jigs I got are 3 16th oz, so pretty light but maybe I'll have to try flipping jigs instead
  12. I think this may be my best bet, I just looked at what a punch skirt is and it looks awesome, you get the profile of the jig but the weedlessness of a soft plastic
  13. Ah I'm fishing mono, though I bet braid does help saw it off more
  14. huh i did not know that, I will have to try grass jigs perhaps
  15. ah a swim jig may be worth trying, at least if its moving it wont dig down as much as a normal arke jig, I do have some of these and didnt even think of it, yeah its just submerged grass that grows a few feet under the surface.
  16. Will check them out I definitely have to learn about grass jigs!
  17. Wow okay I did not know about grass jigs, this is really good information, thankyou and will look at some different brands!
  18. Arke style, and awesome will try super glue!
  19. They are smarter, think about it this way, a 1 month human compared to a 2 year human is vastly different in comparison. Smaller fish are much easier to catch because their like that juvenile delinquent that gives into trying something stupid, whereas an older bass is more comparable to a Steven hawking, aware, apart, and always thinking.
  20. Keep it stupid simple, use the theory you know and plan accordingly, no rip rap? That's alright fish natural dropoffs, no dam? That's alright fish deeper humps/channels. No docks? Fish natural structure like reeds and overhanging trees? Even shade works. Finally points and grass flats can be very effective certain times of day.
  21. So I have heard really good things about jigs, so I picked up a few different colors and trailers. I like the action, and it's a nice compact size but all to often I feel like the jig catches alot of millfoil and it gets really annoying when my trailer slides down. I tried fishing them a few times, and these have a light weed guard. Maybe should I buy a heavier weed guard jig,? But even so the grass seems to not catch the hook but instead the skirt. Maybe just stick to a slender trigged worm. Maybe fish the jig in more woody/rocky areas? If I'm missing something let me know, also if you have any ideas on keeping a trailer on hit me up on that, is the skirt superglue safe?
  22. Yes I have this all the time, and it gets really thick on your line and sometimes it builds up so thick it's the same size of not a little larger than an actual bullet weight. And you can't pick it off. Personally I just retie because while I wish there was a solution, I have not found it yet
  23. It's getting revived with trout fishing for sure, 2lb test, ultra fine wire hooks, and huge 8+ pound stocked trout. One of my most fun battles was a tiny size 500 reel with 2lb izorline with a 1/64th oz trout magnet with ultra fine wire hook, reeling in a 7lb trout, and a 8.5 trout. Both fish took at least ten minutes to catch and for 6 minutes I never touched the handle as the drag was singing. Also by fishing this was I was using the reverse mechanism, which is also becoming a dying art, but I cannot tell you how much I love this mechanism for fighting large fish and river fishing by giving line quickly to your bait to drift it naturally. Personally I also feel like lighter line can give certain baits a more natural presentation because it is not as wirey as 15lb floro/mono, and is more supple. I fish almost all my baitcasting lures on 12lb mono, except for my punching I use 40lb braid. And for spinning for heavier baits I use 8lb, and for lighter wacky rigs or spybaits I use 6, but if it's open water I'll even use 4lb on ultra small child rigs and exposed point baits like fine wire ned rigs.
  24. Well it depends, effective for what purpose? If the purpose is to get it removed, it can be effective but not as effective as chemicals, If you are asking what is the effectiveness of harvesting it, it's very effective to be used in gardens after being composted and is rich in many nutrients, if the lake drops alot in the summer from drought (which happens in socal) I will always try to shovel a black bag of this decomposed plant material in a trash bag because it's really good for gardens.
