The power makes a significant difference as well. I have an extra fast g Loomis jwr and an extra fast st Croix drop shot rod. As you can imagine they are very different on the water. What are the weight ranges for the two sticks?

893 can do that, but the 873 offers the upside of being able to go heavier. I sold my 893 and kept my 873c, but at the time I was living in Tennessee where the cover is heavier than where I live now. Going back I’d swap them as I almost never need to go above 3/8ths here and even that’s pushing it. Both are great sticks and have superb actions. Try them if you can, at least get them with a reel and line+weight to see how they load. A couple of my friends hate how the 873 loads a 3/8th oz total package.

I really like the look of most of Daiwa and Megabass rods. I think the P5s and Steez rods have such a cool “it” factor to their style. I would even go out on a limb and say I prefer the legend lines of st Croix more than the NRX. Even the snot green legend x is alright lookin in my book.

With some of the discounts I’ve been able to snag the last year they are worth it. They are incredible rods. They also are fugly looking.

I own multiple NRXs and they all have mediocre fit and finish. You can ask them to make it right but the replacement almost guaranteed will have some other issue. Loomis isn’t on the same level as the JDM brands.

The 873 has been my favorite NRX+ model. Followed closely by the 893. I own a 843 and have had a chance to fish a 903. From my perspective I prefer the 7’ rod. Unless you really need the length to bomb from shore there’s something really fun about the 843. It pretty much does everything 1/4 to 1/2 for me. The 873 does everything bottom contact 3/8 to 3/4. I realize I just said I prefer the 843 over the 903, but love the 893. The reason is in the JWR taper I feel like the 893 is electric and the extra length makes it a light weight pitching dream. The 853 just didn’t resonate with me. I hope this helps.

They are almost certainly are going away. The last time MB blew out inventory like this was the US Destroyers. I’d expect a revamped line to be announced by ICAST. I don’t see the X10 line replacing them because of the actions they have and how different they’d need to be for American anglers. Maybe we’ll see a legacy line be reborn with some p5 tech? At this point I’m not sure where MB wants to push their high end sticks.

I’d not use the 873 for a chatterbait. To be honest I sold my Xbites within a couple months after buying it. It didn’t fit with the type of fishing and cover in the lakes I fished.

The 7’1 will be lighter just because all things being equal it’s 5 inches shorter.

They are both sensitive, if I had to split hairs the 7’6 is like .00001% more sensitive to me. I picked up a 852s for what you’re talking about and the Steez just didn’t get used enough. If you’re not interested in an NRX for what you’re needing I feel like the 7’1 is slightly better suited. The 7’6 is significantly more versatile though. I throw neds, neko, cranks, free rig, drop shot, and finess swim jigs/swim baits on mine. Weight wise the 7’1 will be lighter but again you’re splitting hairs. The AGS rods are super light.

What are your intended techniques? I previously owned the 7’1 and currently own the 7’6.

If you can find one the 873 is going to be the rod you want. Trust me, the extra 2 inches on the BC2 aren’t going to make a difference for pitching and the sensitivity goes on the NRX side. I’ve fished the last season as a co angler after about 5 years in a kayak. I consolidated just like you’re doing, and now keep it simple with 4-5 rods per trip depending on cover and expected presentations.

A website closed shop about three years ago and I bought literally everything they had in things I’d use. Keitechs at 75 cents a pack, dirty jigs at 50, underpins, flipping hooks. I’m still 50+ packs of fat swing impacts deep.

IIRC the 2500 has felt drag washers and the 3000 has carbon. For JDM models they often include lower gear rations. On Digitaka or Japan Lure Shop just check out the image that shows inches per turn and compare it to the USDM models at alf or tw.

NRX 873C CRR. I’ve owned and sold both of those rods and comfortably use my NRX for everything you asked about. It also carries a solid warranty and with BF coming up you might be able to snag a good deal. If you’re dead set on those two sticks I’d actually lean towards the Utility Player for those weights. The BC2 is certainly an ok pitching rod but it’s designed in my hands for dragging big ass footballs. Neither brand transfers warranties. The only brand I’m aware of that does is St. Croix on their victory and above lines. If you want to test out a solid jig rod pick up an Orochi braillist while they are on sale. It was my first step into higher end gear and I fished it hard for several years.

Wonder what’s going to replace them. Not sure I’d jump on them for 200 but the launcher is intriguing.

When I was fishing out of my yak and could bring 12 combos? Hell yeah I dialed in everything. As a co angler with 4 on the back of the boat? Everything needs to be as versatile as possible.

Post in the location forums for your state specifically asking about being a co angler. I recently moved to Maryland and I found a club in a couple days. Fished four events since August and have had a blast. Ask around any local tackle shops, those guys know everything about local derby’s.

Daiwa makes a travel set, I’d pick up the medium power spinning rod and whatever 3000 size spinning reel fits in the budget. I fished the rivers in east TN a lot over the last 6-7 years. What area is he going to be fishing? Is he targeting bass or just whatever he can catch?

JDM Zillions have aluminum gears, all HDs have brass. Otherwise the same reel. I love it for punching and frogging.

Spend what you can afford. The prices may go up or down. I bought two regular and one HD in August and fished them all.

Madbull was designed for magnum squarebills and has a slower action than the SD. The SD has a faster tip but a really solid secondary load which lets you keep fished pinned with single hook baits. IMO the SD will be a better option of the two. I’d look for something inshore or saltwater for what you’re targeting. Bass rods aren’t designed to handle fish nearing a meter and probably 25+ lbs. EDIT: googled average size and they are around 14lbs. A heavy rod can probably handle that but still not something I’d be extremely comfortable with day in and day out.
