I’ve done this to my brother. but solo on a kayak with a hook in one of my two hands, is a whole other event level.

On the ocean. I dropped my bait into the depths. The 6 oz weight shot down dragging my hook behind it - fast. It dragged a #6 hook into my middle finger at the first joint. I tried to pull it out. It was shocking how firmly it was embedded in it my finger. It didn’t even wiggle. Didn’t help the weight was dangling a few feet under water. I was pinned. I put my rod away after putting the reel in free-spool for some slack. Used my face to turn the knob to lock it back down. I just grabbed my fishing pliers, got a good grip, looked away, and yanked. It popped free. I let the blood drip freely to flush out the puncture. Then I applied pressure with the thumb. I rinsed out in the ocean. I swear I heard that “da-dum….” JAWS theme song play out in my head. I stopped thrashing my hand in the Pacific Ocean. The bleeding stopped quickly and I dropped my bait down to catch a flat fish for live bait. What a start! I’ve only been self hooked twice in my life. This is the first time it buried deep to the hook bend. the line burn I did to myself a few hours later was much more painful. now? I hold the sinker and toss that into the water. I keep away from the hooks.

a zip tie is not the answer? I dont run any motor wiriing inside, but it does bum me out that I have about a bass boat lengths worth of transducer and power cable running from my fish-finder and battery. I have zero connections at the fish finder, but my battery has a connector that has not failed me yet. I rolled it all up, and zipped it to a post inside my kayak hulls.

12? dang. I dont even own 12. hahah.. that is wild. I am okay tying the occasional knot. I am not competing anyways. maybe with myself. tournament of one.

I blew mine around with a leaf blower. it worked a tiny bit. this one is loud.

5 combos. light bottom contact heavy bottom contact wacky spinning moving baits topwater. if I’m going to the delta, add punch rod combo.

I think a bass boat and a jet ski had that baby.. the kayak just got to watch.

Saturday, I caught fish on every bait I threw. not many fish, and none were big. in general fishing sucked. but I took the buzzbait out for the first time. right out of the package. it casted way better than I expected. standing in a boat, up high, it's easy to get it to come right up and buzz. it was my only attempted bait that was fish less. one bass smashed it, but it didnt hook up. BUT: that thing makes a racket!! it squeaks loud! even working it slower it still made noise. I cant wait until I get my first fish on it! I bought the jet-black version. I think I need a light colored one as well. you all know I am a buzz bait rookie, but I think I started off with a good version.

no down time here. I go-go-go 12 months straight. I've kicked the monkey in the nuts once, hard and it just bothers me a few times now. I have feverishly streamlined my gear. colors, hooks, weights, and baits. I have my usual suspects and rarely venture from my game plan. I will go to Mexico again soon, and that trip, I try stuff that I never try..so much fun.

I like grits. and when I am feeling fancy, I eat polenta. HA took a break and fished for bass.

maybe we start seeing fishing gear at the airport Duty-Free stores. stop in, buy a bottle of booze, a carton of smokes,...and a fishing rod.

this weekend I felt that I wanted to fish freshwaters. last weekend, while I was out on the salt: on another beach further south, a fellow kayaker got punted by a great white shark and sent into the dark waters. he climbed back onto his overturned boat and swamped it further. other kayakers had to help him right the boat and empty it. no thanks. the guy did get a shark tooth souvenir left embedded into his kayak. (that would a necklace in zero seconds flat for me) so I hit the delta with a friend. Gale force winds, and the toughest bite I have seen in a while. sooo.. the rest of the weekend will be me trying to best my furthest jogging miles and maybe some yard work. hahahah... have a great Labor Day Weekend people. I should also try flipping my kayak (back over) and getting back in faster!!! hahhaha..

Get to a position current and wind will push you to in order to fire off a cast.

I just laughed in my very quiet doctors office visit. I bet they run more blood tests now, thanks.

Water was rough! Like a washing machine. I didn’t eat anything. I was kinda shaking from hunger by the time I got home. good times. I can’t fight a big ling cod to save my life. They snapped my 25lb mono easily. Loosen drag and they hung me up in the rocks. my Lexa 300 has a jerky drag too. but I was getting crushed. So I have that part figured.

I like their old school motor oil color. the one with the iridescent green hue. I'll get some for next spring. the 5" stick bait

krap. headed out to big blue tomorrow. I do have a pack of red clones with me. I do feel dirty.

the previous me: first thing I did was to backlash from the excitement. that first cast was a hot mess. the current me: I send a topwater popper like a dang boss.

I run a high low rig for rockfish. the bottom hook is a whole squid. the top hook, is a shrimpy looking jig. got me thinking..I bet an undulating beaver would looks sexy and yummy. wish I had some pinks or crazy bright colors. what is the Berkeley knock off to the Dolive Beaver?

Sun damaged hands are not a good look. I think our hands are a great indicator of our age. I don’t want old hands with paper thin skin. im 100% gloves. My finger tips look 80, but the rest of my hands scream 30-something.
