Dead slick nights, what's your approach?
I've done my best night work with a black chatterbait, Texas rigged z craw, and red eye shads. The red eye shad is responsible for most of my 5#+ night fish but the z craw and the chatterbait have a 7 and a 6-13 to their credit

Popper
I've been doing well on a rebel foxy lady 1/4oz (3-pack only) and a chrome sexy shad KVD splash jr, for a larger popper I like the metallic ghost ayu yozuri hardcore popper 70F . I have a popmax but it doesn't get the bite like the others do. I also do better with my own feathered trebles, using thick bucktail + very long shiny bits instead of marabou. I need to make one for the popmax. adds a lot of action to the pop n stops and using an owner stx38 ups my hookup %. I'm partial to shad colors but that's just what I've had the most success with. honorable mention to the rebel foxy shad 1/4oz.

as they have all said, i've done best when I set the hook immediately. i would also add that I felt the smaller fish more than the larger ones, I didn't feel the 5lb pick up the worm at all I just lifted my rod and it was heavy. Same with today's little chunk. but not the smaller fish I've caught with it. that plastic is soft ☁️?️

Many around this forum throw big worms this time of year and catch big bass...the search feature of this website was an MVP for learning about the Ol Monster

Better morning. Caught four around 12-14" on the ol red eye and then one a little better on the ol monster. It's been nice to get some better bass while learning to fish bigger worms

Bank fishing vs. boat fishing
One of the downsides to bank fishing is that keeping lures can be a struggle. One wrong cast or learning a new spot gets expensive quick. Tonight was a reminder of that; I wanted to fish under the supermoon but there were a lot of people out, the bites were scarce, and I snapped off a trio of 3/8 tungsten worm weights. All the casts I wanted to make had other peoples gear in the way, so I tried to make the best of it and it bit me. Sometimes you make some great discoveries being pushed out of a comfort zone but other times you're just flicking $10 of tackle into the wind and going home early

Bass boat hits floating log
This sort of thing scares me, there's no fishing that's worth the price of me not making it home. I've seen whole live oak trees the length of my car floating down Ray Roberts in the days after heavy rains. That's a killer if you hit it. The rogue log that just...appears, for no reason, is the stuff of nightmares. We had a guy pass away on Lake Palestine in east Texas about 10 days ago, his boat struck a concrete pillar and he went overboard. Another boating incident claimed a soul a couple days ago at Lake Lewisville. Boats are not toys. It's not like taking a high dive into the water when you crash at speed it's more like hitting concrete and then hoping you stay awake/intact enough to not drown before you find land or another boat. I also feel better knowing I'm not the only one who doesn't perfectly enjoy every single part of the bass boating experience lol

A drop in surface pressure turns the bass faucet off. Just the one little beat up spotted bass this morning. Gonna go throw big worms under a full moon tonight and hope for the best ?

I was inspired to go throw a chatterbait to kill an hour. PB spot×smallie hybrid I believe. Either that or just a nice smallmouth. And then a little LM on the ol monster. Gotta go home now though.

I just wish I caught them more consistently lol. I do take a small level of pride in the consistency I do have considering the amount of pressure at the main spot I fish. The buddy I was with today who caught the big bass has been talking about getting an aluminum bass tracker so hopefully we can make that a reality soon ? I always fish better out of a boat. I had a cool experience running the red eye shad up an incline of riprap, I could see a ball of larger (4-5") shads all around it before it got too shallow and they scattered. That color and size is magic at that spot I swear. If bass hitting any moving baits at all it's gonna get crushed sooner or later. Problem lately is they're only sometimes hitting moving baits

My thumb is still recovering from yesterday's nice bass, she was toothy and angry. I caught a dink, lost a heavy heavy bite and then watched my buddy catch a PB of 6lb 8oz (middle pic), using a color, location, and technique that I suggested. Proud friend moment. I'm not convinced that the heavy I lost was a bass. It ran like a bass, but my hooks were slimed. My best guess is still gar or a blue cat. I made a few technical mistakes in the process, I had the drag just a touch heavy because I was having trouble setting the hook from distance. But this hit was maybe 10 yards from me, I was not distance casting. I knew what was happening, felt the line may break, didn't set the hook hardly at all, and then eased up on the drag. It swam at me which didn't help. It dove into some invasive milfoil and left my red eye shad behind. But it was strong enough that 12# sufix siege felt like it would immediately break if I thumbed the spool at all. The answer to all this is to use the normal rod I use instead of trying to reinvent the wheel

I'd just be afraid that the roland martin-shaped group of crows that follow me around the lake would get hungry, or perhaps fancy a game of 'this little piggy'. Those are my good walking toes! I can't have my toes be scratched by crows

It wasn't even 80 when I left the lake this morning. It was absolutely heaven. Made for a decent numbers morning. 2 on a dawn topwater bite, 4 landed 2 lost on a red eye, and the bigger fish on a black grape ol monster from deep. That is without a doubt the fattest 5lb I have ever caught. Length of a 3 but thick as heck. Scale froze on 5lb 8oz. Pulled harder than any of the 7s I've caught this year. I believe I felt the barb pull out about midway through fight. I did not feel the strike, I picked the lure up and felt it start running. Beautiful fish, great numbers morning - first bite 6:25 last bite 8:05.

$125 Lure?
It would have to be topwater or it would never get fished effectively in my hands lol

Fishing Shirts
Oooo I love old threads I have a magellan/mossy oak combo brand shirt that I love a lot, vented pits, and the little emo thumb holes for protecting the tops of your hands (and also showing Mom that it really isnt 'just a phase'). I have been totally unable to find a second one. I don't think they even make this type anymore. One of the few synthetics that actually keeps cool. Otherwise it's a very lightweight cotton t shirt, added sun sleeves for long days.

You're Not Getting Bites, What's the First Thing You Change?
Probably the voltage on the fish whistle. Also depth.

Stepped out around 930p to see about annoying some bass. First cast mission accomplished and then 2.5 hours of head scratching. Weather finally starts cooling off next week it looks like, finally back in the 90s. Low quality pic is low quality but it was dark and the flash kills my night vision

do you still consider yourself a rookie in fishing?
Yes, almost entirely
