  1. u guys no ten, no, a hundred times more about bass than me... maybe a thousand times. this is an interesting thread. but do you think it's possible when fishin' is tuff, and you reach for the smelly stuff, that it's the... placebo effect or whatever. that you have more confidence, and so it seems like something positive has happened with the fish catching thing? or maybe for some of you guys that's exactly what it is --- confidence builder. in my day we called that 'hai karate.' lol.... like al pacino in 'scent of a woman', "i been around...."
  2. i feel like the only guys who responded to this thread are into scents. anyone not into scents who care to chime in???? interested in the other side of the story
  3. tom i am so sorry to hear about the loss of your son. but it sounds like you and he shared a love of fishing. i am sure it helps to have those good memories........ um.... ok, perhaps i'll give finesse a try...
  4. i'll ask them more if i see them again.... they were saying that the visibility was --- real bad --- the water was clearly brownish.... one guy was tapping on his rod? i assume to make noise.... the other chap said the tungsten weight was making noise, to attract the fish. finesse fishing sounds kind of tuff... i guess i'll stick to non-finesse, lol... seems interesting tho. idk anything about drop shots, but yes, i could kind of see it maybe helping get the bait up a bit --- but then the angle of the line on retrieve just seemed so 'low' that i wondered if the bait really can get much above the weight.... but obviously you've gotten real world experience that the drop shot keeps your bait cleaner....
  5. i've totally ignored bfs up to this point.... i felt like it was a japanese thing.... i have some little okuma celilo rods, 6' and 6' 6", 2 to 6# line, lure weight 1/32 to 1/4 or 3/8 oz.... are these suitable for bfs? they seem so tiny.... i considered them panfish or trout rods.... i;ll probably continue slinging my standard baits, but if my celilo rods would be good for bfs, maybe i'll give that a try. i'm assuming this is on spinning equipment... thank you ---
  6. i showed up with i guess a typical spin rod at the pond i fish at - 7' m, lure weight 3/16 oz to 5/8oz... 6# to 12# line. a couple guys i spoke with were using these much thinner, shorter rods, and one showed me his lures, which were a lot smaller than the ones i typically use. since i basically just saw the lures, i simply noticed they were maybe half the size of mine. one guy using drop shots with i think a 1/4 oz (or less, not sure?) tungsten weight. was that finesse fishing???? idk much about that, and didn't think people used it for bass. i assume they were doing it because january is so slow. should i switch to lighter stuff like they were using, or is it uh.... six of one, half a dozen of the other. i'll try to catch up with them - they fish there a lot, i guess.... if it's bass they're after - i don't quite get how they bring the bass in, the equipment is so light. thanks!
  7. the japanese seem to be among the most polite and warm people around... i think the biggest problem will be the toilets --- they are pretty --- incredible and great, but you'll probably have to ask for some instruction in their use. i think the japanese are used to that. in fact, when you get back to the usa, maybe you'll yearn for one of those japanese toilets. oh, maybe be careful if you end up dipping your toes into a hot soak tub... they do wash before they get in, and the tub water can be unbelievably hot. just grab some uncooked potstickers to drop in with you, and have a fork handy. um - oh, i'm a bourbon and whiskey sort of dude, and i think japanese whiskeys are pretty incredible.... maybe if you bring a primo bottle of american bourbon you can trade it for --- just about anything! * note... i actually don't know if the japanese are super into american bourbon, which is pretty strong flavored. they're very particular about food... similar to the french, imho. they even have their own version of italian food..... it is probably NOT that similar to italian food, probably sweeter, or something. i've never had it.... oh, and have a great trip! be adventurous and ask questions.... if you need a food taster at the wagyu thing, or anything, pm me!
  8. just went out bank fishing, my local pond/lake. two other guys out there - we lamented how slow the fishing is. the water was pretty muddy, but the weather was not bad. we all had a pretty good time, even tho there was one small fish caught between us three. all of us enjoy the little lake we fish at. - tho dammed, like many other lakes in our area, it has a lot of structure, cool places to fish, a middle that is reachable --- very scenic and peaceful. i think it's summer or fall..... when you get up on the rocks, you can see the bats at dusk.
  9. 1 1/2 #..... i'm a little off my game, but i'll settle for that.......... if i get lucky, 3#. oh, let's face it, i'll settle for anything..... start small.... hopefully work my way up.
  10. thanks for the replies. i'll go ahead and try wacky with the medium power of the rods i listed above. does anyone have an idea of how sensitive the perigee ii spin rods are?
  11. if you got a favorite place to bank fish - that's tops 4 me. minimum of fuss, minimum of gear, beautiful scenery, you can chat with folks who inevitably ask "caught anything?", it can be just a quick little excursion. bank fishing keeps everything as simple as possible....... i've never had a boat, but i feel like with a boat, there'd be more pressure to catch some nice fish. bank fishing can be so pleasant and easy.
  12. i assumed folks stopped fishing from the bank ---- in 2008. that's when this thread was last replied to ..... that's 15 years!
  13. i have two perigee II spin rods, both 7'. one rod is mh, action fast, line 10-20#, lure 3/8 to 1oz. the other rod is a TWIN tip: tip 1 is M power, line 6-12#, lure 3/16 to 5/8 oz. tip 2 is MH, line 8 to 14#, lure weight 3/8 to 3/4 oz..... is there much of a difference between these, and which one might be best suited to light plastics? are they 'sensitive' enough? i'd pair it with either a sedona 4000 with braid, or a penn battle 2 2500 with mono. i'm guessing the 4000 might be more appropriate, balance wise? i'd prefer not to buy another rod............... thanks in advance....
  14. thanks glenn, as always............ have a great december! don't hug any fish.
  15. ya nailed it. my personal goal for 2023 is to make a list of my goals in 2024. that's it.
  16. i'm right handed. i learned to bait cast a couple years ago. it simply made sense to me to not have to switch hands after casting. for both spin and bait casting i hold the rod with rh, reel with the lh. so no switching hands bait casting. that just seemed so odd to me... i can bait cast with either hand. it's interesting how so many guys find different ways to be comfortable and all the various hand combinations, to do certain things with a certain hand... and some guys just do both, or either!
  17. i advise people i no --- most of whom are over 55 -- to stop watching the news. it is so upsetting. yet these people fail to take my advice. then tomorrow, they get all upset, all over again, running around mad and angry and scared..... yes, totally avoid the news.. and those senior discounts! definitely....... you feel like you're earning new money every time u use 'em
  18. yours is an inch larger than mine... that size just seems really convenient. that's my favorite pan, but i'm single. for groups --- i guess you reach for 'big iron'.... lol.
  19. butkus is the perfect name for a linebacker. i guess like nitschke. lots of consonants.
  20. type 1 i guess can run in families, and is non-reversible. type 2 is reversible, as in, you change your diet, get exercise, etc --- which means probably that people in your family need to do so also. otherwise you'll be eating the same foods, etc that got you to prediabetic in the first place. i was talking to a young girl - 25? she was totally phreaked out about her diabetes diagnosis. it's type 2. she knows, i guess, that it is 'manageable' or reversible, but she just can't really get a grasp on those facts. she has seen too many people in her family just wrecked by diabetes. very sad. hope you reverse it..... it's doable, generally. yeah, u will have to change your diet and stuff --- i don't think its as terrible as people say. you shood feel a lot better, once you've got a good diet, etc...walks, more activities.... no soda or fruit juice.
  21. i'm completely confused... does he mean handle side of reel pointed up, or handle itself pointed up.... and the handle itself is, i guess, parallel to the spool axis. i have never even thought of this concept. and this is to relieve torsion to the spool? i guess i can't figure out why this even matters. ty. happy bait casting
  22. grandma's cast iron looks the perfect size --- is it larger than my 9" (measured along the top edge of the pan)? mine's a wagner. i get the impression the older cast iron was a little thinner than the current lodges are.... when they can freeze dry beer, you'll be totally set....!
  23. oh --- too bad she can't bring a two burner. that would be pretty awesome. yeah, you wouldn't want to drop grandma's cast iron in the drink......
  24. wow - she's camping with a cast iron fry pan the size of my biggest cast iron fry pan..... i wish mine had the handle on both sides...that stove looks.... tiny?
