Bourbon (Whiskey) For Beginners?
Lagavulin 16 yo... about $100 now. A little out of my price range. Used to be my favorite scotch. Now I like knob Creek... the 120 proof stuff... Preferable to the 100 proof kc . Also enjoy Japanese whiskey... but I guess those aren't bourbons. Don't drink scotch any more. If I can't have my lagavulin.....

Cast iron pans.
I don't see how cast iron can heat unevenly... it's solid cast iron... It's one material, and of even thickness. It must be your heat source,IMHO. Actually, I'll move my pans around on my heat source, thus controlling where the heat is directed... so part of my pan may be right on the heat, another part slightly off it. And Soap can harm the seasoning. But I just continue to cook with the pan, and simply add oil to it, to cook. Pretty quickly the seasoning is fine again. Or you can reseason it... no big deal . I don't own any non stick pans. No thanks.

Hated sounds of fishing

A man's got to know his limitations. What are yours?
Strengths I taught myself to bait cast with my new Shimano slx. Within days I was fishing pretty comfortably with it. That year I also began casting leftie. I love casting. It's so relaxing and rewarding. Gazing awestruck in the aisles at fisherman's heaven, aka Dick's. It's... heavenly. Although also confusing, to be honest. Weaknesses I don't have any fishing buddies. I'm not very social. I guess that's why I enjoy these forums! I don't enjoy fishing for hours at a time. And I don't like cold, heat, bugs, boredom..., I'm a fair weather fisherman....I admit I get frustrated with no bites whatsoever. Studying and learning all those crazy habits and tendencies of the bass. Idk what is more mysterious... The lmb and trying to read his mind, or... Well, women. They're equally unknowable. Switching between spin casting and bait casting. The different wrist action required is difficult to adjust quickly to. Also, my baits tend to be very different, especially in weight, between the two types of casting .

for those who live in legal rec maryjane states
i no for me fishing high would be an unmitigated disaster. it sounds like no one here fishes with a spliff fired up either. it'd be interesting to hear from someone who does, tho.....

Insomnia
as people age, sleep can be an issue...or rather lack of. if my back is relaxed, i sleep better. if it ain't, i'm never quite comfortable and i'm fidgety - sleep suffers. if worry or anxiety is keeping you awake, try not to think of stressful things. leave them for the daytime. i've used thc or pot - that can become habit forming. i've never tried ambien, etc. what i use almost every night is asmr - from youtube. look it up, if interested. also, there's just 'soothing' sounds you can play on reasonable quality speakers ---- fire, water, airport, starship...l haircuts......... the list goes on............ youtube....

The official "Who's drinking tonight?" thread
knob creek single barrel reserve, 120 proof.... but i also like eagle rare, 10 year old. the knob creek, more hard core, for me. eagle rare, kind of nice sippin' stuff.... i forgot what i paid for it, but i think it's a moderately price bourbon.... for beer, i like pilsners......scrimshaw, which i think is from california. happy sippin' or guzzlin'

rod for castable deeper pro sonar
thanks guys... i'll try with my surf pole, and see how it goes. then decide on a cat fish pole or rod that can handle about 3 oz weight... i'll keep the costs on my rods down - i am still figuring out what sort of techniques i like...

rod for castable deeper pro sonar
is the mapping pretty easy to do? i'm assuming the deeper stitches it all together, and i'm picturing just mapping the parts of the lake where i fish... what was the most valuable info you got from the mapping - contour, or vegetation? i'm unclear what my favorite presentation is... i guess that puts the irod out, for now. as i said, my spending on rods is in the $20 to $70 or so range. they seem fine to me!

rod for castable deeper pro sonar
thanks, guys... my rods are okuma, kastking perigees.... shakespeare, but mostly okuma, which seem like nice rods. so, $30 to $75 each is my standard price for "fine" rods... @PhishLIi'll check out that jr swim bait rod... it would be nice to have a versatile, nice rod --- when you pay that much, does it really handle the range of 1/2 oz to 4 oz baits equally well? i ask that because i havent ever paid that much ($149) for a rod. my shimano slx rods only go up to maybe 1/2 oz or 3/4 oz at most, but i got the combos, which are around $149. what is BF? i hadn't really thought of that.... but u might be right, at least to start. that pole is so heavy and big --- i got a huge daiwa 5000 on it. it's my crab snare rod! i don't use it for anything else. i don't normally toss anything very heavy. crab snares weigh about 6 oz total... i'll stop by walmart... if i go this route (the cheap one, lol) i'll go spinning for sure.

rod for castable deeper pro sonar
i'm planning on getting a deeper pro chirp, which weighs about 3.2 oz. most of my rods are pretty light, especially on the lure rating - most are rated up to 1/2 to 1 oz or so... i have my surf rod, a 10' okuma that casts up to 8 oz. i don't want to lug that thing around tho, just for a sonar ball. any suggestions on a relatively nice uh... do-various-things rod, that can manage to cast 3.2 oz? i would prefer using spinning rods. that seems the easiest. i think i'm used to my light set ups, unsure how heavy a lure rating i'd need. maybe 2 oz? or is that simply too light..... for line i'd be thinking of about 40# or more. i don't want my deeper pro chirp to go sailing off into wherever-land on a cast. i think this would be for fresh water. thanks! happy holidays....

Have you quit fishing before?
yeah - i stopped from 20 yo to 63 yo --- that's... let's see,,.... 43 years. i didn't really learn how to fish as a kid, although went with either of my parents. . then at 63 i got back into it... trying (in order) surf fishing, lake fishing (bass, panfish), and hope to get a trout at some point. the advent of youtube and various forums, etc makes learning a lot different than when i was a kid.

anyone use the "field guide to freshwater fishes of california?"
@BASS302 thanks for the info... the revised mcginnis book has 532 pages. i *think* it has quite a bit of info on each fish - it's amazing (at least to me). the maps showing distribution of especially native fish is pretty cool. it's kind of geared to fishermen, i'd say, even tho it doesn't say so on the cover. it has many pictures, drawings, etc. it's pretty thick, and though used, in great shape. i definitely got a bargain! if i use it a lot, the spine will probably have to be strengthened...... it's a thick book, 4.5" w,7" tall, 1 1/2" thick,

Top Water Question
um, from the title, i was looking more for - time of day to use one, or something like that... i used one for the first time last week. they're amazing --- they cast like rockets, land like a splat, and do this crazy movement. if i was a fish, and into crazy movements, i'd hit it for sure, rightie or leftie....

anyone use the "field guide to freshwater fishes of california?"
I have your book#2, by McGinnis, published 2006,a revised edition. I prefer books, such as handy field guides that I can mark up or insert book marks.... why do you prefer the moyle book? i haven't seen it, and only chanced on the mcGinnis book at a library sale.

If a top-shelf bass fishing celebrity could join BassResource...
personally, i like the old guys... a video i saw with dee thomas, who recently passed, was cool. it's interesting to see how the sport got started. videos i've seen with the guy who invented the ned rig - he's from the midwest, that was cool. they put in the time, have seen a lot, and don't have to push any ads or anything. also, i'm in my mid sixties... i guess i prefer guys older than me, or my age, lol.
