    They're parasites. I'm not sure exactly what they are, but if you cut one out, it's like a little worm.

    I've never had that much bad luck with rods in a year, but I had a pretty bad day last year. In one afternoon, I stepped on one rod and squished a guide, and I kicked another one off the deck of my boat never to be seen again.
