  1. Salt water pier? Depends on what type of fish you are trying catch… lots of options. Can you add reel and rod numbers? Tom
  2. Wire dia 1.5mm = .059 dia, that is a very heavy wire hook. Look at this by rod power( ML/2 power max rod force is 2 lbs. M/3 power is 3 lbs MH/4 is 4 lbs H/5 is 5 lbs. Force being dead weight lifting strength before bottoming out. I use the above values to set my drag. My jigs use Gamakatsu 5/0 #114 is .041D, and #604 5/0 is .050D. Suggest using Owner #5103 for max wire dia per hook size ; 2/0 = .048 3/0 = .056 4/0 = .060 5/0 = .064 Reference rod power number to */0 hook size fit a general guide line. Tom PS, I use the reel and rod sweep hook set with drag set as noted. Tom
  3. Very difficult to measure braid because it isn’t round like mono line and tends to flatten. I found Fins braid to be very honest in their published data. For example I bought Seaguar Smack Down influenced by BR members. Smack Down didn’t cast good and replaced it with Fins Spin5, smaller diameter with excellent casting performance and knot strength. Smaller diameter line definitely makes a difference everything being equal. Tom
  4. Smaller diameter wire hooks vs larger diameter takes less hook setting force. The issue is hook strength preventing bending under hook setting. Hook strength isn’t always the wire size used to make the hook. Hook shape, length, gap size and sharpness are important factors to consider. For example a forged (flattened wire in the hook bend) strengthens the hook. Type of metal and heat treatment directly affects strength, plating and/or coating affects ease of point penetration along with sharpness and bard size. The wider the hook gap the more it will bend under hook setting force. A round bend is weaker then a Sprout, O’Shaughessy or sickle bend. Lot of factors to consider. A general statement is use the strongest hook made from forged smaller diameter high strength wire. I avoid EWG shape hooks whenever possible and use Gamakatsu and Owner brands because of proven performance over decades of use. Tom
  5. YGK Xbraid Upgrade is smaller diameter the what the OP is using and should increase casting distance. A MH power rod will also improve casting distance vs. H power. Tom
  6. As Kieth noted there are several good thread inserts to look into. My suggestion was to use a Hellicoil and retap the Helicoil threads and install a one. Other options. Is pull out the old Helicoil and install a self taping thread inset, only requires an Allen wrench. The threads don’t need to be perfect to secure the pump cover. Any auto mechanic can do this as it’s a common problem with aluminum block engines. Tom
  7. Shimano 2024 model SLX 70 can easily handle .008D line plus it’s a Shimano reel with factory parts and customer service. The 2024 has MGL 3 spool! Sales are going on now Tom
  8. AJay’s suggestion having about 3’ of line hanging from the rod tip Is spot on if you are fishing alone in a boat or nothing is behind you. Pointing the rod tip at the target after you release the line helps to reduce line slap going through the rod guides. long casting distance is all about rod tip speed and letting the rod do the lure launching. Fly fishing the angler is casting the line and that takes learning to let the rod do its work. Spinning casting is different yet the same. To get accuracy a faster snap cast using your wrist with spinning tackle is the opposite of bait casting where you use more forearm and wrist motion. It still comes down to the rod. line, lure aerodynamics and a free following line coming off the reel. Suggest you practice on a football field so you know the casting distance is improving.’ Tom
  9. I have Lands End SPF men’s pants . Tom
  10. If the helicoil (spring in the threads) is damaged you can pull it out and get a Helicoil tap to case the damaged threads and install a new helicoil. The water pump housing cover doesn’t have a strength function. Don’t know what size original threads are? my guess is 1/4-20. Tom
  11. When I had my boat 15 combo’s didn’t seem to be enough. I had 3 identical custom MH+ Jig& worm casting combo’s with the same reels and line that used nearly every outing, a back up for a back up! Tom
  12. PM member Way2Slow, Kieth is an expert on Evinrude OB’s. My initial thought is a ‘93 Evinrude is over 30 years now and parts maybe difficult to find in good condition Did you damage the lower unit from the power head to the prop shaft or just the gear case and unit under the cavitation plate? Tom
  13. I am down to 2 bait casting combo’s and could get by with 1 spinning for finesse. Bait casting; Custom 6’ 10” 5 /MH+ fast jig & worm rod w/Daiwa SV and 12# Tatsu FC. MJ Iovino’s Splash it rod 6’8” MF w/ Shimano SLX 70 MGL and 11 lb Armilo Nylon. Utility rod for everything else. Spinning; SC Victory 7’3” MXF w/ Shimano Vanford and 5# Max UG copoly line. Tom PS, I have 2 other finesse spinning combo’s 1 for Senko’s the other drop shot rigged. If you want to catch numbers of bass where I fish finesse is essential and I back seat now.
  14. 1st determine what seasonal period the bass are in. Next determine what depth the bait and bass are at. Depth prey source and seasonal periods determine where the bass should located. East or west shore line does affect sunlight but weather; clouds, wind, time of day and current are more factors. Basically after 9 o’clock in the morning sunlight is equal on the water. Shadows help to conceal bass and gives them an edge over prey so it is a factor to consider. Tom
  15. NAS-F31MH correct number for spinning rod. Flattery will get you everything😀. The reason I recommended this spinning rod is I had a very similar model 7’ MH jig & worm rod and like it. Loaned the rod to someone who moved without returning it or I would still use it. Tom
  16. Major Craft Nanoace NAC-F31MH is excellent rod for $100 from Hook Up Tackle XFast rod, 7’3” 1/4-3/4 oz lures, 10-20 lb line. Tom
  17. What rod , reel and line are you using??? The bass has a mouth full of soft plastic like a gum ball, it’s not stretch out! Hook set timing various but the 1,2,3 method isn’t going to work very often. Like Catt said set the as soon as possible when you detect a strike. If the worm comes back balled up on the hook, the point didn’t penetrate the plastic. Hook sets needs to move the hook into the basses mouth tissue and to do that your tackle applies the force needed. Tom The OP answered my tackle question while posting the ??? So a bank angler using spinning tackle and making long cast. Spinning reels move a lot of line, the rod maybe a few feet. My suggestion is use the reel set by reeling fast and then a firm rod sweep to move the hook into the basses mouth, keep the up and loaded while applying pressure to prevent any slack line. Tom
  18. I can’t give you a reason it just doesn’t work. I fished with a guide at lake Cachuma last year and said the same thing couldn’t get bit on the Sinko. I don’t know why? Tom
  19. I thought the Slinko was a winner but haven’t caught anything on them🤬 Tried C-rig, Finesee C-rig (Slip Shot), drop shot and Neko rig. The Senko worked where the Slinko didn’t. Tom
  20. I believe the gen 3 is IRG754F Magic Stick. This rod is a excellent lite rod but it’s main purpose is a frog rod. Tom PS, TW 20% off sale now
  21. There is a tool called Easy On worm threader. Basically a hollow tube you push through the soft plastic and feed you leader line through the tube. Tom
  22. Croatia is over 1,100 nautical miles from the Atlantic Ocean you need to cross the Mediterranean Sea. Tom
  23. Look at the weight nose end hole if it smooth radius it’s tungsten. Any dought Drop onto a hard surface if it clinks instead clunks it’s tungsten. Tom
