We each have our own pet lures to target off shore structure. Mine start with jigs for a few reasons; I can cast a jig a long distance allowing lots of coverage. Crawdads are often prime forage on off shore structure and jigs replicate dads perfectly. Tom

Slip shot rig; ——-main line—-cylinder weight—-glass bead—-Carolina keeper—————-hook and worm. Main line I use Maxima 5# Ultra green. Cylinder weight; black Top brass Pro Jo 1/8 oz 8 mm glass faceted bead, you can rubber peg the bead for a stopper. Carolina stopper is optional if you peg the bead. Hook #5133 Owner down shot hook, size 1/0 (under 5” worm)or 2/0 (6”) weedless (Texas) rigged. This rig is totally adjustable hook to weight length. I start off with about 30” and use hand poured worms because the tend to float and snag less often. Mono line also keeps off the bottom better the FC line. This a very productive rig for finesse presentations from post spawn to fall. No advantage using braid on a bait casting reel you have chosen with a FC leader vs straight FC, Copoly or mono imo. Mono is the easiest line to learn to cast. Copoly line is a blended mono. FC is Fluorocarbon (monofilament) line that cast good if managed properly using a line conditioner. Your concern with 2 knots is valid, 1 knot at the lure is preferred. IPT isn’t a constant because the circumference changes as line comes off or back onto the spool. Today’s size 100 casting reels have narrower small diameter spool with line capacity about 100 yards of 12 lb mono. A 40 yard cast reduces IPT nearly 40% , not insignificant. Smaller diameter reduces the the IPT loss, 1 reason BFS casting reels have shallow spools with very small diameter braid. Tom

IPT and or gear ratio have zero to do with casting distance. Lots other factors come into play regarding casting distance, number 1 is the rod, the lure weight and it’s aerodynamic or resistance going through air. The reel plays a part in how light weight the spool is, line capacity and friction resistance. The line is another factor as smaller diameter line with low friction coming off the spool affects casting distance. Gear ratio is fixed to the reel handle where 8:1 = 8 full revolution per each full 360 degree turn. How many inches of line a spool holds is based on line capacity, how many inches of line at 1 full revolution depends on the spool diameter at the line level, circumference. ie; Pi ( 3.14159) X Diameter. 1 1/2” diameter of spooled line 1 full turn = 4.7” of line. 1” spool diameter = 3.1 inches of line. As the spool of line decreases after you cast the IPT decreases. 8:1 gear ratio 1 1/2” dia IPT = 37.7”. Same gear ratio 8:1 with 1” dia , IPT = 25”. Tom

Inch per turn is inch per turn regardless of the reel handle length. Longer handle increases your leverage to turn the handle, doesn’t increase speed. Tom

An area the same depth as a football field in a depth less then 10 or so that isn’t the lake bottom I consider a flat. Look at AJ’s example. Most of the early example I consider a shelf, a flat area on fast sloping structure, good locations. Tom

The warmer the water temperature is the higher the need for bass to eat, metabolism increases. The opposite is true the colder the water temps reduces need to eat. How to apply this to bass fish can only be a general statement because bass tend to do what want in lieu what I want them to do. The one thing that seems to hold true is offer something that looks like the predominate prey source at the moment. If the bass are targeting 8” rainbow trout in cold water use a trout swimbait. 3” Shad in mid summer use a shad imitator lure. If that doesn’t work keep fishing until something works. Tom
