95% of the 10 # bass caught weigh 7# on a scale. Tom

Shad Soft bait...a Real one? Not Yet.
Basstrix Live Trix Shad looks alive but doesn’t swim like the real thing. Good lures, fished like a dying Shad. Tom

Shad Soft bait...a Real one? Not Yet.
Live fish have the ability to “light up” iridescent that no lure can do. Huddleston Deluxe makes a Grass Minnow and Shad that look like the real thing and catch bass. Some hard lures have iridescent coloring with flash. Tom

Glide Baits: Floating or Slow Sink?
Slow sink is Totally a subjective topic. Even some of the Floater have run depths to 3’-5’. Cold water is higher density then warmer water affecting ROF. Tune your lures to your needs. Tom

Standard Palomar With Braid?
I learn to tie what today is called a Palomar* knot around 1955 by Red the manager of Please Point Boat Landing,Big Bear Lake. Red called it the Indian knot. Tom *Named after a fireman who tied this knot at Fred Hull fishing show winning Strens strongest knot contest in the 70’s.

Glide Baits: Floating or Slow Sink?
Glide that floats is a wake bait imo. Tom

Shimano SLX
Everyone believes the Curado MGL out perform the SLX MGL, the only difference I can tell casting them is the Price, performance is nearly identical. Have zero use for DC casting reels. Tom

Old School TD Fuego Brake Issue
A friend of mine gave me his TD Fuego because he couldn’t consistently cast it without a backlash. I took the reel to a good reel tech and he told me about the recall and had the part to fix it. Tried to convince Bob the reel works great now but he wanted me to keep it. Good reel! If your TD Fuego is defective you will fight it no matter how well it’s cleaned. Tom

Tail Spinners
Underspins with soft plastic swimmer (Keitec) works better imo for for bass on the bottom. Tom

riding the back deck on a bass boat. rod management?
1. Wrap your line around the rod, bow string the line and spin the rod about 3 turns so line is wrapped around the blank and guides. 3. Keep unused rods in the rod sleeves. 4. Use lure wraps on lures and hooks. Tom

Tolerances on baitcasters.
Most 8# FC is .009, Berkley 100% FC is .011. Todays Daiwa and Shimano bait casters have about .005 clearance. Tom

When fishing extremely tiny creeks/streams, do you find an ultralight setup to be more ideal?
Depending on how difficult it is to reach the smaller creeks, what you have works for bass. A pack rod is easier to carry and any “trout” spinning rod or light fast bass rod about 5 1/2’ works good. California has hundreds of small trout streams in the Sierra Neveda ( High Sierra) mountain range that runs 430 miles long back packing is a big sport. Lots of trout rods available in a wide price range. I would also consider a 750 size spinning reel.

Old School TD Fuego Brake Issue
Contact Daiwa directly it’s easier them searching. Tom

Old School TD Fuego Brake Issue
The early TD Fuego had a flaw with the braking and Daiwa sent out a notice to replace the part. I Don’t remember the details now but it’s a simple fix! Tom

Older model reel parts
This isn’t the right forum, reel ? are in another forum. Don’t recognize the reel model no? nearly every bait casting reel since the early 90’s uses a anti reverse bearing. Pawl is normally the part the travels on the line guide worm gear to spread the line on the spool. ?? Tom

Muddy water is my Achilles!
SoCal we rarely have off color let alone muddy color water. This year 2023 we had epic rain with heavy run off creating muddy color water top to bottom, not our tropical wind blown surface mud lines. Our bass are sight feeders living in clear water, muddy water is a challenge for the bass and us. Lateral line water vibrations become critical to help bass locate prey and your lure. Black color has the most low light contrast so use it! Rattles help, lures like spinnerbaits that move water help. The old stand bye was Bumble Bee; black / chartreuse, add rattles and you are good to go! Tom PM, email for photo

Back Seat Experiences
To the OP, a hired guide shouldn’t be fishing in front of you the client, his job is getting you to catch fish! When I was a boater taking friends fishing I always put them on bass with instructions where to cast, what to use so they caught bass, same as any good guide should do. Now I find myself in the back seat occasionally and learned to let the boater fish and keep out of my his way. If asked I will run the front of the boat for awhile to give the boater a break and relax, something a back seater gets to do every trip. Enjoy your time on the water…..it’s limited. Tom

Surf spinning rod
The OP is using a spinning surf rod of unknown length, reel and line??? West coast surf is generally 2X wave height compared to east coast and inshore fishing is relegated to bays. Surf spinning rods I am familiar with are 12’ to 16’ long to keep the line off the breakers near shore. Some piers don’t allow overhead casting to protect people walking on the pier and that is difficult to cast a long rod under the pier. If overhead casting is allowed the longer rod could be an advantage. Tom

Beginner Help
Tackle Warehouse is a good online fishing tackle site we all use. Lures that catch bass consistently for over 60 years everywhere are; 1. Soft plastic worms 2. Top water lures 3. floating diving minnow shape lures. Soft plastic worms come hundreds of shape, sizes and colors. Hard to choose 1 stand out for beginner anglers. My choice when teaching new anglers is a 4” to 6” finesse worm, green pumpkin color, split shot rigged using spinning tackle. Close 2nd is a weightless wacky hooked 5” Senko. Minnow lure is the original F13 Rapala Silver w/black back. Top water with spinning tackle is the Baby Or Tiny Heddon Torpedo, baby bass color. The 3 basic lures give top, middle and bottom lures anywhere you bass fish. Hooks for soft plastics is another confusing subject, my advice stay with premium sharp worm hooks size 2/0 or for finesse worms and size 1 weedless wacky hook for Senko’s. Line 8# premium monofilament like Sunline Super Natural is good. Tom
