The original GLX rods put G. Loomis in the forefront, good blanks. The rods are heavy compared to today’s thinner wall blanks and light weight hardware. Look into having the rods re wrapped with lighter guide train good bang for your buck. Tom

My Skeeter was a very fast bass boat in the late 80’s over 70+ mph. If you didn’t put everything away or strap it down it would blow out. The 1st item I lost was a flip phone that I forgot to put away it flew just past ear and the wind shied. Took a friend fishing and Harold brought his big possum belly tackle box back seating. Harold forgot to put the tackle box away and it flew out the back scattering lure in the wake. We managed to net the floaters and the box losing most it’s contents. Another partner had a habit of kicking rods overboard and I retrieved all of them using and old metal clip stringer on a cord works good! Night fishing is an invitation to lose things overboard, hear a splash and say what was that? Did lose a watch when the line snagged on the clasp tuna fishing. That is a few I recall, Tom

My 1st lure was a Hawaiian Wiggle #3 weedless spoon, phenomenal lure. I have fished Johnson Silver Minnow spoons with some success. My compliant is the dull hook needs to be sharpened and doesn’t hold a sharp point long. Tom

You can put 60 lb braid as backup filler, tape over with a layer of Teflon plungers pipe seal tape and add 75 yards of 30 braid or mono top shot. This reduces spool weight and backlash depth. For 30+ years most bass reels were 6.3:1 ratio and rods were 6’6”, not a lot of choices. Tom

When G.Loomis came out with NRX around 2010 the action was very different then traditional fast that has a J bend, the upper 1/4. NRX tends to bend the upper 1/2 yet respond like a fast action the NRX 843C JWR (Jig & worm rod )replaced the GLX 844C JWR as the hallmark rod. Today longer rods are more popular the NRX+853C JWR should in the mix and NRX+894CJWR. I suggest other brands the NBR’s for crankbaits, chatter baits and spinnerbaits Tom PS, NRX+ JWR lure rating is understated; 3 power 1/4-1oz, 4 power 3/8- 1 1/4oz.

Why? 2024 SLX A 70 already has what you need at a lower price point. Tom

When I discuss seasonal water temps it’s at the depth bass are acclimated to not surface temps. When putting together Cosmic Clock and Bass Calendar it took years of measuring the temperature of the bass and the water at the depth they were caught in, it was the same. I used a Dark Industry temperature probe with 50’ of wire marked every 5’. The temperate was nearly instant reading on analog meter battery powered. The data showed how deep and where the bass preferred to be as the water went from cold period below 45 degrees and where they were as the water warmed to 55 degrees and started to stage before moving shallower to spawn about 3-5’ deep at 62 to 67 degrees. I realized bass were predicable based on water temperature seasonal periods and made my Cosmic Clock and Bass Calendar for a seminar in 1974. 50 years later nothing changed with bass behavior or seasonal periods . Factors that couldn’t be over looked was photoperiod didn’t affect the start of spawning as I assumed. Big Bear lake is 100 miles south of lake Casitas and freezes over. The bass at Big Bear started their spawn cycle at the same 62 water temps although in May or June in lieu of February or March at Casitas. Both lakes are in the same photo period with very different climates. Tom

I went to ASU in the early 60’s and fished most of the States bass lakes, Rivers and ponds. Northern AZ Mogollon Rim lakes to Imperial reservoir in the South, Havasu west, very diverse topography and temperature zones. Salt River lakes are more central Resoovelt at the top Canyon, Apache and Saguaro. Florida LMB were planted in the Salt River lakes in the 70’s changing those fisheries. I am not familiar with bass lakes around Tuson. East of Tuson is mountainous west is desert. It does get cold in AZ mountain areas in the winter, snow and ski resorts, it’s not all hot desert. Tom

Why on earth do you need a deeper spool with more line capacity for bass fishing? The difference in weight is in the T handle on the 3000. Tom

Water clarity influences lure selection at night. Good clarity nearly every color that works during the day can catch bass at night. I have more confidence using lures with contrasting colors or darker colors at night. Bank fishing changes lure selection because your depth perception is poor causing casting accuracy to be poor. My choice from the bank is T-rigged 7 1/2” to 13” plastic worms with 3/16 oz bullet weight and glass bead “brass n glass”. This presentation creates clicking sound and big worm move a lot of water for the bass to locate it. Weedless single hook lures don’t snag often. Bag of worms, hooks, weights and a head lamp is all you need to bank fishing changes at night. The 1st hour after dark is usually slow as the ecosystem and bass change to night feeding patterns. Tom

I go by seasonal periods water temps and 60-55 degrees indicates “fall “ or transition into the cold water period. The same water temps followed by the cold water period will be post spawn. Tom

Sight fast moving lures are probably not a good choice. Noisy* surface lures and Power Worms T-rigged /sliding butter weight are top producers. Tom * Buzz baits, Whopper Popper, Jitterbug etc.

We have both Western and Piedbill Grebes that feed on Threadfin Shad. Bird watching is the easiest choice to located Shad. The Western Grebes is white and the size of Loons, easy to see. The smaller buff ball size Piedbill tends to work the shore line shallower water. Water that drops bellow 50 degrees causes the Shad to go deeper to find warmer water. Lots of game fish feed on Threadfin Shad, bass are usually under the school. 3” structure spoons with chicken feathered hook is my go to lure for deeper Shad schools followed by tail spins. Tom

The Pop-R has gone through several modifications over the years starting with Zell Roland. The original Pop and rest presentation changed to faster Pop and spit to shower water forward. Reducing the cup shape mouth and streamlining the body. The 1/4 lure doesn’t cast well using line over .012 diameter. Mono or Copoly line that stays on surface is still preferred. Chug Bugs come in different sizes so take your pick. Loop knots work although not a strong knot. Big Game 10 lb is a good choice for both top water lures. Tom

It’s easy to make an open silicone hand pour worm mold. Use a Pyrex dish and super glue the worm of choice to the bottom. Pour the mold making silicone over the worm about 3/4” thick, let cure. Reove the silicone and trim the worm cavity with Xacto knife so the worm lifts straight out. Done! Tom PS, with flat bottom hand pours rig them with the flat side up increases swimming action.
