Katie's last thread got a response about an expensive spinning combo going over the side, which sure hits home. What is the most expensive, or nostalgic loss from your time on the water? I lost my Fenwick Fly Rod on Kentucky Lake during a boat stumble one day, and I've had just about everything else hit the water at sometime or another including glasses, pliers, Beach Umbrella, rod and reels combo's, me, Ect.

You can tell topic info is in short supply as our Northern Brethren  are dealing with hard water.

Oh, how many cell phones have gone over the side? I know everybody's lost a hat or two...dozen.

In the last year a full Plano flex box, recovered about half the items but the box was gone, a rod sleeve, and a pair of rx sunglasses.

My Leatherman got tangled in the anchor rope and what seemed like slow motion I hollered with my arms stretched forward, diving to save my friend of 5 years from a watery grave . Too late . He slipped below the surface without a sound , descending out of my sight within seconds. My heart broke as I thought of all those times my trusty SuperTool was unjustly used as a hammer or a prybar , saving me a trip to the pickup truck.  He should have retired and spent the rest of his days comfortably resting in the bottom of my sock drawer , but no. We had a hats off moment of silence and said nice words about him and that was a good story, huh?

Years ago while fishing with my Dad and Brother...we lost a spinning rod and reel over the side.

Dad just smiled and broke open his tackle box, produced a large treble hook...and started dragging the bottom of the lake.

About ten minutes later he pulled up a loop of fishing line....and kept pulling...eventually he got to the end of the line on the spool...and pulled up the spinning rod and reel we lost over the side.

Nice!

I went to toss my braid scissors on the front deck...and over-shot. Kerplunk!

I lost my cell phone last April. I could see the lighted screen again and again as it tumbled to the bottom, end over end. Five minutes later, I caught my PB. So, here's my suggestion: Chuck your cell phone over the side and brace to catch your PB.

I also lost my beloved Swedish-made Cardinal reel when a pal dropped it over the side while he was "rearranging the rods." It had a carbon fiber rods too, back when they were new and expensive.

No truer words have ever been written. This is me after reading them. Yes, I clearly grieve with gusto:

I've dropped one rod/reel over the side in 5 decades of fishing. It was in a river and the current pulled it about 20 yards away... my fishing partner quickly reacted with a snap cast and somehow hooked the EVA grip and reeled it in. It was a nice Majorcraft rod and Tatula reel.  Phew!

Wedding ring.

Yup.

In front of my wife.

I had just reeled in my jig that was covered in algae.  I pulled it off the jig and tried to let go of the algae so it would fall back into the water.

It stuck to my fingers.

So I shook my hand vigorously to free the clingy slime.

It let go of its grip...while pulling my ring right off my finger!

PLOP!

Wife, "What was that?"

Me, "Uh...I'm not sure." (looks at hand) "Oh no! It was my ring!"

Wife, "Can you see it?"

Me, "Nope.  It's gone."

I've lost my dignity and self respect and a small armada of rods over the side.

The worst thing to lose boatside is a big fish though!

I have had to purposely cut several anchors off in the rivers fishing salmon and steelhead.  Sometimes those things get wedged so bad in the rocks they cannot be retrieved against the force of the current.  I once threw my expensive knife in the drink when cleaning a fish and chucking the guts overboard.  Sacrificed a couple three hats to Davey Jones in the ocean.  Can't really turn the boat around quickly and retrieve them in that scenario.  Haven't lost a rod yet in my decades of fishing.  I am sure I am due for that one soon.  Probably will happen after I buy a couple new NRX+'s. 😂

I threw my wedding ring in the trash at work when I took off some nitrile exam gloves.  Didn't realize it was gone until a couple hours later.  Had to go digging and sure enough, it was inside the turned out glove.

I also lost my wedding ring in the platte river in NW Michigan the day after my wedding. It was my late father’s ring……. Luckily I looked down and it was right in-between my two feet! Haha. Still got it, and it’s resized

this is only possible in the clear waters of Michigan, it would still be underwater if I did that in the TN river

My Skeeter was a very fast bass boat in the late 80’s over 70+ mph. If you didn’t put everything away or strap it down it would blow out.

The 1st item I lost was a flip phone that I forgot to put away it flew just past ear and the wind shied.

Took a friend fishing and Harold brought his big possum belly tackle box back seating. Harold forgot to put the tackle box away and it flew out the back scattering lure in the wake. We managed to net the floaters and the box losing  most it’s contents.

Another partner had a habit of kicking rods overboard and I retrieved all of them using and old metal clip stringer on a cord works good!

Night fishing is an invitation to lose things overboard, hear a splash and say what was that?

Did lose a watch when the line snagged on the clasp tuna fishing.

That is a few I recall,

Tom

My wedding ring/band is worth about 50 bucks.  I've lost a couple already.  Easy to replace.  I refuse to pay big bucks for one when it could be lost.

Now, my wife's wedding ring is another story.  That cannot be lost.  I have a fully separate insurance policy on it just in case and I called the insurance agent before I left the building when I bought it to make sure it was covered.

Worst thing I've had go overboard is my dog.  When she was younger, the first time I took her with, she jumped in and started to swim off.  I put a halt to that and it never happened again.  She turns 13 in February.

Wow, didn't realize wedding rings were so easily lost. Thought I was the only dummy. I lost mine very early in our marriage. Was raking leaves to overwinter/mulch my garden. Went into the house and no ring on my finger. Several hours of digging and sifting in the 1/4 acre garden yielded no results. We were too poor (financially challenged) to buy another, so it was awhile before I could get another.

Them wimmins oughta know better than putting something expensive on the finger of a simple minded man. I lost mine a few days after our wedding while sledding with the grandkids. I've been wearing cheap titanium rings ever since. Currently on my second one of those. 😂

I've never lost anything expensive overboard, but I have a friend that finally had enough crap from a cantankerous old 20hp Merc, and sunk it in a lake. A mutual friend lit him up for being such an idiot, then went out and drug it up with a hook and rope. He spent around 1k in parts and labor on that hunk of junk over the next few years, never did get it running reliably, and finally sunk it in the same lake after one too many refusals to start. 😂 He ate many servings of crow over that one.

I says well I’ve lived 30 however many years and never worn a ring, first day is a little tricky

Lost my cell phone a few months ago, trying to text and bumped my arm and plop. It sunk very fast. Some ladies kayaking nearby saw it happen and checked on me, even offered to let me use theirs to call my wife but I decided not to call her from a strange lady's phone so I just headed back immediately so my wife would know I wasn't dead floating somewhere.

I lost my new prized rod and reel combo on Monday that I bought on Black Friday. Nicest one I've ever owned, first time out with it. Somehow when I was casting it flew out of my hand. I almost dove after it but better sense stopped me luckily. Diving into 50 degree water alone from a kayak would have been way worse than losing the nicest rod I ever bought I believe. I'm still tore up about losing that rod but I'll get over it. Not sure what lesson to learn from it except to not get too worked up about it, I can always buy another one although not at the price I got it at or with what's left of my budget after Christmas.

I lost a Veritas casting rod with a 1st gen Concept C off my kayak.  I went in after it but couldn't catch it.  I marked it and went back later with goggles and my FD issue flashlight.  The pond is so stained visibility is almost NIL.  It was a $300 combo.

I almost lost my Kistler KLX w/ Tatula SV TW off my boat, but luckily, my wife was 'right-place-right-time' and caught it.

Another 'almost' was this past March.  I turned to change setups on my kayak and snagged one I didn't want while swapping.  It went into the drink and I went in after it, in 40 degree water.  I got the rig, got back on my kayak, pedaled to shore, changed clothes and went back at it.  I keep a change of clothes in my truck during winter and ALWAYS wear my PFD.

My wedding ring is priceless so I leave it at home and wear a groove ring from ace hardware. They have a lifetime warranty, I ripped one and got free replacement

Our big dog stepped out of the boat to chase some geese once. She initially sank , but then popped up and started swimming toward the geese. I couldn’t stop laughing and my wife was like “chase her down with the the trolling motor!” I was thinking more like , hey, she wanted to go for a swim, let her paddle around a bit so I was on low speed going after her. Wife is getting madder, I wasn’t sure why. She then explained if the dog ever hit dry land we would never catch her 😂 . I kind of forgot about that part, she was lightning fast back in those days
